Chapter 69 Did I really lose you?
Damian’s POV.
Rain hit the glass window violently as I stood in front of it with a glass of liquor in hand and a cigar in the other.
My assistant had just broken the news of my brother, Dante, sending divorce papers to my office.
“Did she sign?” I asked as smoke curled through the air.
He stood silent for a few minutes. “Yes, sir.”
My grip tightened on my glass as my face clenched in anger.
“Hmmm. She sure wouldn’t hesitate to sign it.”
“Sir, I don’t think she…”
“It doesn’t matter anyway. My brother always has his ways of doing things that pisses me off.”
“I think she was forced to sign it.”
My head turned before my body could move.
“What do you mean?”
“I suspect Dante forced her to sign the divorce papers.”
Dante didn’t need to force her. She already hates me so much and always wants to part with me.
I sipped a little from my glass, almost choked from the smoke.
She had hated me more since the reveal of the twin switch.
This was a great opportunity for her to leave, she wouldn’t let it go.
I admit that I had never really cared about her. But why do I feel this way?
Wasn’t I supposed to be happy? She’s leaving to her rightful husband, and I’m gonna be a free person.
I waved my assistant away.
“Hmmm,” a deep sigh left my throat.
This is crazy.
Sometimes I wanted her, to myself. Seeing how my brother was treated the way I was supposed to, made my heart ache.
Looks like I’m still the abandoned one. “Hahaha, interesting.”
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” I said, straightening my suit.
The door opened in one push. Lucia.
What was she doing here again?
“Hey, D,” she said, closing the distance between us.
My face turned icy cold as I sank into my seat.
“What do you want?”
“Why do you look so pale? Come on, you’re always mean to me…”
“Quit that nonsense pretense of yours. Cut straight to the point.”
She slowly put her bag on the table and walked toward me.
“I was out with friends, I just thought I should drop by and say hi before leaving.”
Always playing stupid tricks in front of me all the time.
“Last time I warned you to stay away from Isla. Looks like I’ve been so lenient with you.”
A smile tugged her face.
“I didn’t do anything to her.”
“Stop acting dumb with me, Lucia. I see your little movements.”
Her hands reached for my collar as she gently sat on the table.
“Come on, I did nothing to her…”
My eyes locked with hers. “You did nothing? How did she know about the twin switch?”
She went silent in one go.
There was a flicker of fear in her eyes, one that I hadn’t seen in a long time.
My hand went to hers, pulling them away from my collar.
“Don’t think being tolerant with you doesn’t mean you get to do whatever you want without my permission, Lucia.”
“I just had to let her know who she was really married to…”
I grip her wrist, pulling them forward.
“How did you get to know about that? You’ve been spying on me?”
“No, no. I just overheard your conversation with Dante…”
“You were there that night? How much did you hear?”
“I, I… you’re hurting me, Damian.”
My hand was freed from hers.
“Pray I don’t find a thing on you. Because when I do, I’ll make your life a living hell.”
“Damian, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
“Get out!”
“Why? I already said I was sorry. Can you stop being cold to me?”
“Guards?”
She stood without a second choice. “Okay, okay. I’ll go.”
I watched her walk away.
“Fuck!” I muttered.
What did I even get myself into? It was all my fault anyway.
I shouldn’t have allowed her to get close to me.
My hand reached for my phone. I dialed for my assistant.
“I want you to dig every one of Lucia’s movements. Everything. I need them before tomorrow ends.”
“Yes, sir.” He responded.
The day passes by quietly.
It had been a restless one for me as I couldn’t stop yelling at my staff.
I could finally go home and rest my head.
She had been in my head all day, Isla.
Every time I tried to shake her thoughts off my head, it wouldn’t stop.
I flashed back to when we were newly married.
How terrified she was and how I had been so cold toward her.
She looked so innocent, but I had ruined that part of her with my own hands.
I gave her hope, and then, killed it without a second thought.
I recalled how she always wanted to cling to me, her pure eyes, her warm touch…
How I had given Lucia the opportunity to humiliate her and didn’t do anything about it.
Dante had taken her effortlessly, something I had tried and was even given a chance to.
My hands clenched on the desk.
Look at what my selfishness had gotten me into?
I kept denying her because I was scared the past would come back hunting me again.
If I had given myself a chance, if I had given her a chance, maybe things would have been different.
I clutched my hand to my chest, I could feel my heart pounding so hard.
Was I really going to lose her?
