Chapter 40: Secret admirer

KRIS:

A year later "Kris, how about this one?"

My roommate Violet asked, showing me a long sleeveless black dress.

"For fuck's sake Vee, I'm not attending a fundraiser nor a ball. It's a dinner party.” I said, rolling my eyes.

"I just want you to look classy.” She pouted.

"Find something else. Something knee-length. I want to be comfortable with what I wear.”

The lady beside us must be tired.

I had to attend a dinner party with my boyfriend, Kade, so we were shopping for a dress.

We've been browsing this store for the past one hour but I haven't found anything suitable.

"How about we just check another store?" I suggested.

"Whatever you wish for, my lady.” Violet said in a fake British accent making the store owner smile.

Turning to the lady, I gave an apologetic smile but she waved it off saying it was okay.

We left the store and hightailed for the next one. Getting to the next store, we were led to the clothing compartment and it didn't take time for me to find a suitable dress.

Violet found shoes to go and a clutch. We paid for the items and went on to grab lunch from a coffee shop five blocks away.

We got chocolate pie and coffee before settling down to talk about unnecessary things. Once done with our meal, we boarded a cab back to campus.

We stopped at the dorm to drop off the shopping bags before heading to our afternoon class.

Class ended by 5:pm. I practically ran out of the class with Violet.

Kade had sent a text during my class that I should be ready before 7:pm. That gave me just two hours to prepare.

The walk to my dorm took fifteen minutes. Immediately we got in, I hurried into the bathroom and took a quick bath.

Thereafter, I began preparing. Violet offered to do my makeup.

Truly, when you have a roommate like her, you can never say no to a little make-over. She's so good at it.

She finished in no time. I stood at the mirror admiring her work. The off-the-shoulder short mauve pink dress hugged my slender curves to perfection, stopping right on my knees. The neutral colors she used for my makeup brought out the blue in my eyes.

"Stop staring at the mirror and come sit so I can fix your hair.” She held my wrist, pulling me on the vanity stool.

She was almost done with my hair when my phone rang. I picked it to see it was Kade.

"Hi baby.” I answered.

"Errr...hey.” He sounded uneasy.

My heartbeat gradually accelerated.

Firstly, Kade doesn't answer my greetings with hey. It felt strange so I felt something was off.

"I'm almost ready. I'm trying to fix my hair.” I replied nervously, shifting my anxiety to the back of my mind but his reply brought it back in full force.

"Err...about that. You are no longer coming with me.”

What the hell? Okay maybe it's nothing serious.

"Ohh. Why?"

"I found someone else.”

My heart plummeted but I tried to convince myself that it was just for the party or something came up.

"Just for the party right?" I asked in a shaky voice. Somehow, I knew his answer before he answered and I was right.

"No. I mean we're done. With everything. Don't bother trying to contact me again.” The line went dead after that.

Placing my phone on the vanity, I got up and began undressing. Violet looked at me in confusion.

"Why are you stripping?" She asked.

"Apparently, Kade just broke up with me on the phone.” I replied as calmly as I could.

"Just like that? With no reason?" She frowned.

"No reason.”

"Oh my God...I'm so sorry baby.” She embraced me and I rested my head on her shoulder.

She rubbed my back soothingly.

"He's an asshole to do that. If he couldn't face you to do it then you don't deserve to be sad about it.” She said after some time.

I pulled away from her.

"You know what, you're right. An asshole is better than he'll ever be.”

She smiled.

"That's right girl. Now wear something, let's binge watch Netflix with popcorn and ice cream.” I smiled back. "But not before taking a photo of this beautiful face and posting it on your Instagram page. Dude needs to know what he's lost.” She added.

We ended up doing exactly just that.

Thirty minutes later, we were on a couch in the living room watching a movie with memories of Kade long gone.

Guess I didn't like him that much since it took no time in forgetting him. But it still doesn't feel good to get dumped.

I wish I'd been the one to dump his sorry ass.

Once the credits of the movie rolled in, I retired to my room but I saw something I wasn't expecting.

A single white rose was on my nightstand with a white envelope by its side.

I knew that wasn't there when I last entered the room so how did it get there?

Maybe Violet snuck it in to cheer me up?

"Vee!" I called.

"Yeah, baby.” She came into the room. Her room was just next to mine.

"Did you drop that there?" I pointed to the items.

"No.”

Who did? Maybe Kade is trying to apologize? But how did they get there?

Without asking, Violet picked the envelope from the nightstand. She opened it and brought out a note.

"Uhhh...it's a note from a secret admirer. A possessive one at that.” She gushed.

"What's on it?" I asked curiously.

"you're mine" she stared at me waggling her brows.

My heart dropped. I knew who it was.

Kade wasn't sweet enough to send roses and the dude just broke up with me.

Lucian.

I'd managed to avoid all contact with him for the past one year. I had to attend a college that's far from home so I wouldn't bump into him.

Now he's back. I only hoped this was a sick joke.

My life has been better without him in it. Not seeing him had reduced the guilt I felt. I still hated him. Nothing was ever gonna change that.

If I see him here I'll get a restraining order against the bastard. I mentally concluded.

"Do you have any idea who it may be?" Violet inquired.

I didn't tell her about him. Moving away from home felt like a new beginning for me. So I threw the memories away but it seems they never left.

"Nah... whoever it is, he's outta luck and has bad timing.”

"Why?" She raised a brow.

"It's single ladies time!!” I jumped on her and she squealed.

We dropped to the ground laughing.

After she left, I tore the note with the envelope and destroyed the flower before throwing them outside my window.

Can't have toxic gifts in my room.

After that, I slept peacefully.
