Chapter 236
Lynette's POV
I stood there in the dark. Kael beside me. The celebration noise fading behind us.
I should leave. Right now. Walk away before this got complicated.
But my feet wouldn't move.
Kael leaned against the railing. His shoulders were still tight. I could see the muscles trembling slightly under his shirt. Overexertion. His body was running on fumes.
He didn't look at me. Just stared out at the dark territory spread below us.
"You know," his voice was quiet, "I never actually thought this day would come."
I kept my mouth shut. Let him talk.
"Growing up, it was always this distant thing. Something that would happen eventually. But not real. Not..." He trailed off.
Then he turned his head. Looked right at me.
"But you believed I'd win from the start. Why?"
I met his gaze. Kept my voice flat.
"Because I've seen weaker people do harder things."
His eyes narrowed slightly. Like he was trying to read something in my face.
Then he did something that made every instinct in my body light up.
He moved closer. Half a step. Then he breathed in. Deep.
His eyes widened slightly. Confusion flickered across his face.
"Your scent..."
Fuck.
I took a step back. My muscles tensed automatically.
"You're exhausted," I said. Kept my tone casual. "Your senses are fried. You should rest."
He shook his head. Didn't break eye contact.
"No. I'm clearheaded right now." His voice dropped lower. More intense. "There's something about you. Something familiar."
I could feel it. His wolf was pushing at the surface. Trying to identify something. Trying to connect dots.
My heart rate kicked up. Not fear. Just calculation. How much danger was I in right now?
His Alpha presence pressed against me. Heavier than before. The ceremony had amplified it.
I forced myself to stay still. To not react like the top-tier predator I actually was.
"Kael." I cut through whatever he was about to say. "You need to handle territory business. Drake's waiting for instructions."
I pointed toward the hall. "Elder Thomas and the others need your schedule for tomorrow."
That worked. His attention fractured. He glanced back at the hall. Then back at me.
But his eyes kept returning to my face. Like he was trying to solve a puzzle.
I saw my opening.
"I should go. Training class tomorrow."
I turned to leave.
His hand shot out. Grabbed my wrist.
Every muscle in my body locked up. My Alpha instincts screamed at me to break the hold. To establish dominance. To make him let go.
But I couldn't. Not without blowing everything.
"Wait—"
"Kael."
Victoria's voice cut through the moment. She was standing in the side doorway.
"The council needs you to sign the official documents."
Kael's grip loosened. But he didn't let go immediately. He looked at me for another long second.
"We'll continue this tomorrow."
It wasn't a question.
I nodded. Once.
He released my wrist. Turned and walked toward his mother.
I waited until he disappeared inside. Then I let out the breath I'd been holding.
My wrist tingled where he'd touched me. I rubbed it absently.
Victoria hadn't followed her son inside. She was still standing there. Watching me.
Great.
She walked closer. Her expression was unreadable in the dim light.
"You're very important to him," she said. Not accusing. Just observing.
"I just helped with some things."
"Really?" Her smile was knowing. "Just 'some things'? My son doesn't look at unimportant people the way he looks at you."
I kept my face neutral. "He's tired. Probably seeing things."
"Maybe." She tilted her head. "Or maybe he's finally seeing clearly."
I didn't respond. Couldn't. Not without revealing too much.
Victoria studied me for another moment. Then she turned and walked back inside.
I didn't wait around. I headed for the exit. Fast.
---
I made it to the edge of the territory before I stopped. Leaned against a tree trunk.
My hands were shaking slightly. Not from fear. From adrenaline.
That was too close.
I forced myself to think. To analyze what just happened.
Kael's wolf was searching. Trying to identify the person from that night at the hotel.
The problem? The body he'd been with was Elara's. But the soul inside had been mine.
And wolves didn't recognize bodies. They recognized souls.
That's why he felt that familiarity. His wolf knew. Even if his brain didn't understand yet.
I pressed my palm against the rough bark. Let the texture ground me.
As Kael's Alpha abilities grew stronger, his wolf's instincts would sharpen. He'd figure it out eventually.
Which meant I had a choice to make.
Tell him the truth. Or disappear before he put it together.
My chest tightened at both options.
Fuck.
I pushed off the tree. Started walking toward the Grey house.
---
The house was dark when I got there. Quiet.
I slipped inside. Moved through the familiar rooms without making a sound.
Elara's breathing was even from her bed. Asleep.
I lay down on my own bed. Stared at the ceiling.
Sleep wasn't coming. My brain wouldn't shut off.
Two images kept replaying.
Kael on that balcony. Confused. Searching my face for answers.
And that night in the hotel room. When I'd lost control. When I'd let myself want something.
The problem was clear now.
Kael's wolf had imprinted on me. On my soul. The real me.
But his conscious mind thought the person from that night was Elara. The body I'd been wearing.
It was a mess. A complicated, dangerous mess.
And the worst part?
I couldn't deny what I felt for him anymore.
I was a top-tier Alpha. I'd spent decades building immunity to emotional entanglements. To weakness.
But Kael had gotten through every single defense I had.
I rolled onto my side. Pulled the blanket up.
Tomorrow I'd have to face him again. And I still didn't know what I was going to do.
Tell him? Run?
Neither option felt right.
I closed my eyes. Forced my breathing to slow.
Eventually, exhaustion won. I drifted off.
But even in sleep, I could feel those amber eyes watching me. Searching.
Waiting for answers I didn't know how to give.
