Chapter 235

Chapter 235
Lynette's POV

I stood at the edge of the crowd. Far enough back that I could see everything. Close enough that I wouldn't miss a single word.

The council hall was lit up now. Every torch. Every candle. The firelight made shadows dance across the stone walls.

Drake appeared at my side. He didn't say anything. Just gestured toward a side corridor.

I followed him. He led me to an alcove with a clear view of the center hall. Perfect sightline. No obstructions.

"Alpha Kael requested you have the best view," Drake said quietly.

I didn't respond. Just nodded once.

Drake left.

I leaned against the stone pillar. Crossed my arms. Waited.

---

Elder Thomas stepped into the center of the hall. He was holding that staff again. The one that looked older than dirt.

"Tonight," his voice echoed, "Pinehollow witnesses the changing of Alpha."

Kael walked forward. He'd changed clothes. Black formal suit now. No blood. No torn fabric. He looked... different.

More composed. More controlled.

He dropped to one knee in front of Elder Thomas.

I watched his shoulders. The way they were set. Confident. But not arrogant.

Good.

Elder Sarah moved to stand beside Thomas. Her voice was clear. Strong.

"Do you swear to protect every life in this territory? To uphold the dignity and traditions of our kind?"

Kael didn't hesitate.

"I swear."

Two words. But I heard the weight behind them.

I uncrossed my arms. Leaned forward slightly.

---

Elder Thomas held up a ring. Even from here I could see it was old. Really old. The metal was dark. Tarnished. But the wolf head carved into it was still sharp.

"This is the Alpha mark of the Harrington line," Thomas said. "Passed down through generations."

Kael extended his hand. Thomas slipped the ring onto his finger.

I watched Kael's face. Saw the moment the weight of it hit him. His jaw tightened. Just for a second.

Then Victoria stepped forward.

She was holding something. A necklace. The pendant caught the firelight. A wolf fang. Large. Polished.

"This is my blessing," she said softly.

Her hands were shaking as she placed it around Kael's neck.

I saw tears on her face. She wasn't even trying to hide them.

Kael stood. The ring glinted on his hand. The fang rested against his chest.

The air in the hall changed.

His presence. It was different now. Heavier. More solid.

I felt it press against my skin. Not uncomfortable. Just... there.

Real Alpha energy.

I'd felt stronger. Much stronger. But for someone his age? Impressive.

---

Elder James stepped forward. His voice was gruff.

"Tradition requires the new Alpha to demonstrate strength worthy of leadership."

Kael nodded. Walked to the center of the hall. The open space where he'd fought his father.

He closed his eyes. Took a deep breath.

I straightened up. Focused.

This was the part I wanted to see.

The air around Kael began to shimmer. His Alpha aura spread outward. Thick. Heavy.

The guards near him stepped back. Instinct.

Even the elders looked surprised.

I tilted my head. Studied the energy signature.

Strong. Definitely strong. But there was something else. Something underneath.

Control.

He wasn't just releasing power. He was shaping it. Directing it.

Smart.

---

Then he shifted.

Bones cracked. Loud in the silent hall. His body expanded. Fast.

Black fur erupted across his skin. His face elongated. Teeth sharpened.

Less than ten seconds.

A massive black wolf stood where Kael had been.

Fuck.

He was huge. Bigger than his father. Bigger than most Alphas I'd seen.

Those golden eyes swept across the room. Every single wolf in the hall bowed their head.

Every single one.

Except me.

I kept my gaze locked on his. Didn't blink. Didn't look away.

Those golden eyes found mine. Held.

For a moment I saw something flicker in them. Recognition. Warmth.

The same look he'd given me before. When he was human.

My chest tightened.

I didn't like that feeling. That warmth spreading under my ribs.

But I didn't look away either.

---

Kael shifted back. Smooth. Controlled.

He stood there. Naked. Breathing hard.

Someone handed him a robe. He pulled it on without looking.

Then I heard footsteps.

Heavy. Slow.

I turned my head.

Kael's father appeared in the doorway. Two guards were supporting him. He looked like hell. Bruised. Limping.

But he was walking.

The hall went dead silent.

The former Alpha moved toward Kael. Step by painful step.

I tensed. My hand moved toward my waist. Where a weapon should be.

But I forced myself to stay still. Watch.

The old man stopped in front of his son.

"You won," he said. His voice was rough. Bitter. "Fair and square."

Kael's face was unreadable.

"I'll lead Pinehollow the right way," Kael said. Quiet. Firm.

His father laughed. It was an ugly sound.

"Hope you don't regret tonight's choice."

He turned. Walked away. The guards followed.

Victoria didn't move. She stayed beside her son.

I watched the old Alpha disappear into the darkness. His back was bent. Defeated.

Good riddance.

---

Elder Thomas raised his staff high.

"From this night forward, Kael Harrington is Alpha of Pinehollow!"

Every wolf in the hall dropped to one knee. Even the elders.

"We pledge loyalty to Alpha Kael!"

Their voices rang out. United. Strong.

I stayed standing. Leaning against my pillar.

Kael's eyes found mine again. Across the crowded hall. Through all those bowed heads.

He was looking right at me.

I felt something twist in my chest. Something I didn't want to name.

Pride? Maybe.

Worry? Definitely.

Uncertainty about what came next? Absolutely.

But I held his gaze. Didn't smile. Didn't nod.

Just looked back.

---

The ceremony ended. People started moving. Talking. Congratulating.

I slipped out of the alcove. Headed for the exit.

The cool night air hit my face. I breathed deep. Let it clear my head.

I heard footsteps behind me. Heavy boots on stone.

I didn't turn around. Didn't need to.

"Drake and the others can wait inside," Kael's voice said.

I heard him send them away. Heard their footsteps retreat.

Then he was standing beside me.

I glanced at him. He looked exhausted. His eyes were bloodshot. His shoulders were tight.

"It's over," he said quietly.

I snorted. "Over? You just started."

He ran a hand through his hair. "The factory cleanup. Territory reforms. My father's exile arrangements. There's so much—"

"Tomorrow," I cut him off.

He looked at me. Surprised.

"All of that can wait until tomorrow," I said. Kept my voice flat. Matter-of-fact. "Tonight you need to rest."

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then something in his expression softened.

"You're right," he said.

"I know I am."

He smiled. Just a little. Tired but real.

We stood there in the darkness. The sounds of the celebration fading behind us.

I should leave. Go back to the Grey house. Check in with my family.

But I didn't move.

And neither did he.
