Chapter 19: Chapter Nineteen
Cassidy had gone wild in the hours that followed Jett leaving and denying her and her wolf. As soon as the beta had left, minutes later a lower ranking guard had brought she and Jett trays of food and bottles of water. The guard slipped the slim tray and bottle of water through the lower spacing of the bars where the kennel had been made to accept trays of food or other items, but she didn't touch it. She didn't trust it. Jett on the other hand had come to by the time the guard had placed his food down and when the man left and locked the door, Jett's low chuckle echoed in the room. “I know you cant shift back yet Cass… But try to eat. Slowly. I will get you out of here. I promise.” He said gruffly as he grabbed his own plate and began to eat the bland meal.
Cassidy looked to Jett when he promised to get her out of here. She felt so broken right now. So angry, hopeless and heartbroken she didn't know if she could stomach even the little amount of food that was on the tray. She would try, for Jett. She ate the food slowly, her malnourished stomach unable to handle more than a bite or two at a time. When she was done, she napped for maybe thirty minutes before she woke up angrier than she had ever been before. ‘She will never be good enough!’ she heard in replayed over and over in her head again and again. The Alpha’s words cut deep. Cassidy threw herself at the bars of the cage for hours, snarling as if she had lost her mind and so angry the world no longer made sense to her. She went wild until she wore herself out and burned through the anger to settle on the cold steel bottom of the kennel in a sinking depression. Her mate rejected her…
The hours turned to days and the she-wolf went through cycles of intense emotional changes. She went through depression and grief, curling herself up in her metal box and having nothing but pity for herself and the situation they were in. The beatings Jett had been receiving had stopped for the most part and their food came on a three times a day schedule now that allowed the two prisoners to slowly gain their strength back. Yet as soon as she was feeling stronger after every meal, Cassidy would feel that anger surface and she held onto it. She would pace and growl and think of a thousand ways she would get revenge on the alpha once she was free from here. Even if she wasn't free, all it would take would be one slip up on the alpha’s part if he was ever close to her again. She wanted to hurt him as much as he had hurt her.
On the third day, after the men had come to take Jett away for more interrogations she assumed, they had come for her. Four of them, dressed heavily in riot gear and armed with tranquilizer guns and tazers had surrounded the kennel she was in that was at this time becoming quite fouled from the she wolf’s bodily functions resuming working again. They wheeled Cassidy out of the room and through the halls in the same direction she and the alpha had taken. Every step closer to the elevator, Cassidy became more and more stressed out. Her anxiety levels were rising and the guards that were escorting her were just escalating the fear that was starting to set in.
“Think we will get in trouble if we have a little fun when she shifts back?”
“He did reject her. Its not like she is ever going to leave that cell again.”
“If the alpha can we can. No one will know.”
“None of you will touch her. We have orders and you know the rules. The alpha can do what he wants to anyone, so just do your damn job!” the fourth one snapped at the other three.
Cassidy felt sick listening to the men, but was grateful for the voice of reason that backed the others down. They got her into the elevator and went down to the lowest floor. The same floor that James had taken her to. It had been weeks, but she could still pick up his scent and like a lovesick pup, the she-wolf whimpered with the need to just be near the alpha again. She would even take being tied up in the room at the end of the hall if the Alpha was there with her. There was no such luck for her as the guards turned almost immediately out of the elevator into a tiled shower room.
She thought she was over the rejection and the man behind it. She had embraced the anger and hatred for the wolf that made her feel half alive when she dwelled on it. Sadness swept through her strong enough she didn't fight when the catch poles came through the bars and the wire loops were slipped over her head and tightened. The only thing she could focus on was that faint scent imprinted in her memories and the heart wrenching sadness that came with it. The door to the kennel was opened and the guards walked her free out of it, two holding the catch poles looking warily at the she-wolfs compliance when every time before she had fought tooth and nail. The kennel was wheeled away by one of the guards to be cleaned and the third that remained with her and the two other guards had come back with a hose and did not waste another minute in delaying what their orders were.
Ice cold water hit her directly head on, she not expecting it to be so forceful and so frigid and it snapped her out of her melancholy state. She struggled against the poles to get away from the water, growling and snapping, but all it did was get her backed against the wall, taking the ice cold water as the guard hosed her off. When the kennel was cleaned, they turned the water off and put her right back into the kennel. The men were laughing, joking over her misfortune of getting a cold bath and while they were laughing, while they had been holding her hostage with the poles and freezing her to the bone, Cassidy took in deep breaths of their scents and put them to her memory. These three, the three who had been planning on the trip to this hose down… These three would be on her list of revenge as well.
By the time they were wheeling her back into the room, the Beta was standing just outside of the door with a frown on his face and she caught the scent of the alpha again. Strong. As if he had just been here and in the room as she was taken back inside. She had no idea that James had felt her distress and panic nor that the fear he felt from her had him tearing through the forest with Alaric hot on his heels as James raced to the prison. Or that Alaric had to talk the Alpha down from going downstairs and ripping the guards to shreds before he talked the wolf into leaving the prison and getting back home. The she-wolf whimpered and whined, knowing her mate had been here. He had come back hadn't he? He was going to accept her now?
“Give them both extra rations tonight.” The beta had ordered the guards by the time the door was closing after she was put back in her place. It took her a minute to notice Jett was back already, chained with a busted up lip but a smirk on his face as if he had been the wolf that caught the hare. Cassidy snorted, not finding anything amusing about anything that had happened through the day and she lay down with the intention to sleep. There was silence in the cell as Jett did manage to fall into a light nap and with the silence her mind started to wander a little. Jame’s scent in the room was almost torture for her and her mind and soul focused on him. She remembered his voice and his touch. How kind he had seemed before he rejected her and walked away. She relived the pain of that moment and she and her wolf together began to howl, soft and low. Cassidy had never howled before in her life, but at this moment with the memories flooding through her mind as if it were just minutes ago, it seemed like the right thing to do.
Jett had napped and when Cassidy began to howl, he had woken up and watched her from across the room with a knowing expression in his eyes. The BlackStone Beta knew and could see what his Alpha stubbornly refused to see. Jett could see what his own Alpha refused to see. Both betas knew the alphas were mates. The question was how good of a match were they for each other? James did not want to even give Cassidy a chance and that alone could crush any normal wolfs soul. Yet here his alpha was, caged by her own mate and singing for him to come to her. “You know Cassi… your mother used to say when you sing from the heart, the heart listens.” He said quietly from where he said, a soft smile on his face as Cassidy ignored him and kept calling for her mate.
Jett’s words of what her mother would have said didn't matter to Cass anymore. Her heart wanted what her heart wanted and right now, that was the black haired and green eyed man that was her mate. She continued to howl for him, her wolf doing her best to call the alpha to her. She didn't expect him to come. She didn't expect anyone to come at her calling really, but when the metallic latch clicked open and the door slowly opened, Cassidy was on her feet, happiness spreading through her and her wolf bouncing for joy that the Alpha had finally come back for her!
