Chapter 18: Chapter Eighteen

Cassidy had been drugged heavily with the sedatives the guards shot her with, but now that her wolf was merged with her body, mind and soul her body was already burning through all the tranquilizers with the increased healing ability of her blood. She let out a soft whine when there was fingers stroking over the soft white fur of her for head, his fingers sending a warmth from where they touched. Jame’s voice rose her from the daze and fogginess in her mind and his scent filled her nose.

Honey gold eyes opened to look up at James on the other side of the bars. Earlier, she had caught his scent and had planned on taking him down. She wanted revenge for what he had done to her in those chains. Revenge for holding her and Jett hostage here and then ordering them to be starved to death. All of that anger was thrown out the window right now as she gazed up at the green eyes that were so full of concern and worry. They were eyes she could get lost in and she did for a moment, just looking up at him and not hearing the words he was saying.

“Cassidy…” James had whispered her name when she looked up at him. She was beautiful as a wolf. Silver and white strands of hair making up her fur in a color he had never seen before. His hand slowly stroked over the top of her head and along the side of her cheek. Every time his fingers ran through her fur, he could feel it. The warmth of the bond that was growing rapidly between them. For James, he would argue that his wolf was wrong. This wasn't his mate like his wolf thought by her scent. She just was the product of his venom. He had never turned someone before, never bit a human with the intent to turn them. The thought that the female wasn't his mate however, made his wolf growl within his head angrily.

“I'm sorry.” He whispered the words to her as if they were a foreign language to him. “I never meant for you to go hungry or be starved for your insolence” he said a bit coldly, steeling his mind to keep his wolf from taking over. The beast side of him wanted to just free her and take her back with him to the pack house and lock her up in his room. But that was not going to happen.

Cassidy had given Jame’s wrist a little lick, the contact sending pleasurable little chills where their bodies were connected as he pet her. She tried to focus on his words and it was the tone that the man was using that made her alert. Her wolf was absorbed in his scent, any and all anger she had towards him was gone. She whimpered and struggled to roll herself upright so she was half laying and half sitting. She wanted to talk to him, but there was no link between their wolves. Only the awareness of what they were to each other. Mates.

She wiggled closer to James, his other hand coming through the bars automatically to hold her head steady. The touch made her shiver and her tail beat happily in a soft thump against the flooring of the kennel. Yes. Finally, she had found the one she was meant for. After all the loss in her life from all of the rogues, she could feel relief and happiness bubbling up inside of her. She was so happy for a few seconds, she could have forgiven the alpha of BlackStone for anything he had done to her in the past but with the words that came out of his mouth.

James removed his hands from Cassidy’s head once she was able to hold herself upright and steady. She looked so happy when she had come closer to her, it took a monumental amount of self control for him to move away from her and dig deep into his stubborn nature. She was human. He had to remind himself of that fact. She was human, and was only a wolf now because he turned her. She was working with rogues and couldn't be trusted. None of this, no matter how good it felt to just touch or smell her, could not be trusted. “You are still… Just a human. You will remain here in this place until you die for working with rogues.” He said in a cold, monotone voice. “You are nothing to me.” He bit out, growling and taking a few steps back, disliking the way his chest tightened and his heart clenched. Instead of allowing himself to feel the pain or guilt for denying his own mate, he turned it into anger. “My wolf… Thinks you are my mate. I refuse to believe it and I refuse to accept you.”

Jame’s words were growled between clenched teeth with so much venom and anger. Cassidy stared up at him in shock, the wolf that was in control of her mind and body had not truly and fully come to terms that he was her mate until the words of his refusal felt like someone had branded her with white hot iron. She sucked in her breath, eyes wide before she bared her teeth and growled at him for causing her further pain. Her eyes burned and she started to try and stand up.

Before she could even get up to her feet, a mixture of angry growls and hurt whimpers came from the white she-wolf, Cassidy pressing herself as close as she could get to him. The silver bars burned her nose and any bare skin she touched but she looked up at him, pleading with her eyes for him not to leave her. When James turned to leave, Cassidy became agitated, aggressive and wild like Hunter had described. Everything he would expect from the human going feral from the bite. She threw her unsteady body against the bars of the kennel, whining and growling, letting out a low whimper to get his attention back.

When James had stood and turned around from Cassidy to leave,he came face to face with an angry looking Beta who had been in the door, watching the exchange between Cassidy and James. Alaric was holding an unconscious Jett over his shoulder and his scowl was deep. “What?” James snapped, feeling just as on edge as his own wolf was rioting inside of his mind over the rejection of his mate. “She was human. She will never be good enough and you know it!” he said in a temper before shoving past Alaric to get the hell out of there. He was on the verge of losing the battle of wills between himself and his wolf and if that happened there was no telling what he would do.

Alaric had growled at James when he pushed passed him, running away from the truth of what he had been blessed with. “Stupid foolish asshole…” he grumbled before he took Jett over to his side of the room and laid him down, replacing the chains on the man. “Have faith She-wolf…” he called out in a kinder voice than he used towards James with his growl. “He doesn't understand what he is feeling. I don't think you are what he expected… But the moon goddess would not have chosen you if you were not meant for him.” He said before he stood and faced Cassidy when he was done securing Jett. “Give him time.” He said lowly before he left the room as well, pulling the door behind him and allowing it to lock once again.

The wolf that was a part of Cassidy felt the pain of the rejection strongly, it traveling up and down her spine and through her heart. She was an alpha wolf and with the pain of Jame’s words also came a cold and searing anger that was unlike anything she had felt in her life. She pressed her head up against the bars of the kennel, too weak to unleash the anger and the pain she was feeling. It took her several minutes to calm down enough to lay back down. Her mind now clear, she rested her head on her paws and watched Jett through the bars, coming up with a plan to get the alpha’s wolf to accept her. 'I will show him just how human I am... He will regret his choice in rejecting me...' she growled to herself.
