Chapter 48 - Alpha Daniel
Daniel was the first one to see her, making me stop when he did; the rain that had picked up on our way over had started to fade when I did an impatient huff, wanting to push forward, my pups were waiting, and my Alpha was standing there like he didn’t know what to say to my annoyance! What was so impressive that he had to stop in the middle of the small hill, making me not see shit!?
“Alright…. I’m going back to Allison, make sure she fucking behaves, and you… deal with that….” He had turned his big beast wolf around, snickering when I pushed past him, not wanting to wait for a second longer to see what he was talking about??
I was staring at her. Just take in the sight of the creme-colored wolf lying on the jeep. It was burned out, and three dead beasts below, like she wasn’t half their size, stretching out on the hood waiting on somebody. Me.
She was gazing at me, walking over, not leaving the hood of the car for a second, guarding and unsure if she really believed it was me, to my amusement. I had never seen her beast, only in tiny glimpses and suddenly. Here we were.
“Mate…” I stopped when she was still holding her head up, looking like she was in a relaxed position, but that wasn’t true. I could see her hindlegs twisted just the slightest, making sure she could take off any second, attacking if necessary.
“Ben…” she inhaled slowly, finally looking like she was relaxing when I made a huff of amusement. Yeah, it was me, alright…. and how in goddess name did she manage to kill three pack beasts lying dead on the ground before us?
My paws on the hood made the jeep dig even deeper into the mud; the beast before me came closer, licking my face to my pride. She was a good and strong mate able to protect our pups.
My beast was purring when she still was licking my face, meeting her eyes with mine. To my surprise, they were not black like mine, more of a golden color swirling around, making her look more human than me.
“Milly, can you shift back?” I asked her if she really could do that. I bet she had no idea still being in her beast form, staring at me that was shifting back, sitting naked on the top of the hood before the big golden best that was mine.
“No….” her voice was complaining like she had tried already when the pups were moving, and she couldn’t really tend to them like this, in her beast form.
“Okay, we got this, alright, sweetheart?” I didn’t care about what the fuck Daniel was telling me, Milly not being my real mate just because she was supposed to be a rogue. Look at her! She was no rogue, and I swear she was even more aware of her human nature than I ever was before meeting her.
“Ben… I need to tell you something and… you are not going to like it…” she sounded sad, making my heart break; stroking her fur gently with my two hands; more bad news that I didn’t want to hear? Story of my life.
“Okay, but let's get you back first…… think of how you look as a human, your body, that is sexy as hell, oh and your hair… it's so beautiful… like gold…” she made a huff when I was smiling, telling her all the things I loved about her. She was my mate, and even if she wasn’t supposed to be that I was the one that was blessed for her coming into my life.
“Scrawny and blond. Gotcha.” I growled hearing that; when was she going to get that? I didn’t think that! not for one second when I saw her. I wanted her just the way she was!
“I don’t think that, or anyone else, you are fucking beautiful! When are you going to get that?!” I was up, not caring that she still hadn’t shifted. I bet she was still hung up on my having a mate before her, just like Daniel was, so much that he made me doubt that I couldn’t have a second one that I loved just as much, more maybe with the pups!
“How? I don’t think that. I never have Ben, and…. I saw the beast coming my way to get the babies and me, and you were off doing pack things again! I needed you!” she growled when I didn’t answer that back, cursing myself, knowing she was right, still sitting proudly on the hood like a mounted queen. She really was something else, wasn’t she?
“I didn’t kill them! I know that is why the Alpha didn’t come any closer, he could feel them being dead, and I didn’t do this. I am not a killer!” she was shrieking the last part in my head, panicking when I was holding my head down, pinching the bridge of my nose. Yes, I knew that too, and that was one of the things I loved, that she wasn’t this crazy bitch like Allison!
“Then who? Who killed them, Mate?” I was looking up again when she had been standing on her front paws, staring down, making small yaps like she was yelling at me in her human form, with me speaking back out loud instead of linking her.
“Rogues.” She just said that, sitting down again when I dropped the heavy seriousness on my face. Was she kidding me?! Rogues had saved my mate and pups! That was impossible. They weren’t following pack boundaries; if you did meet a pack, it was because one of them could still tug at the pack bond. They were fucking savages!
“Rogues, as the same rogues that keep telling you shit like you have some parents out there, Milly! Please, this is your family, me, and the pups!” I wasn’t screaming, but she looked like she had been caught. What was so important about finding parents that may or may not exist? She was my Beta female, and I couldn’t see how she wasn’t happy about that?
“Yes. Same ones, they are not just mindless, not like you told me. I know it sounds crazy to you, but what if this is my chance to find my own pack?” she was sounding happier, like my pack, her pack, wasn’t good enough, making me sigh and feel like shit. Great. So we were going to be out here in the goddamn no-man’s-land and find some parents that could exist or could be a damn trap, that it probably was.
“So, they are stalking you…. That’s more reason for us to get back to the pack land, look over what is happening, and not just follow blindly some wild goose chase that could just be….” I was going to say nothing when she was drowning me with the sad emotions coming from my speech; she believed this, and she wanted to do this with or without me.
“Milly, please… listen to me. There are no rogue packs. I’m telling you, as a beast, being born one and living my life in a pack, that it’s a fairytale; pack bond from an Alpha is what keeps the pack together, it's not words or action, and it's just the way it is.” I said the last part with conviction, having listened to my father all my life; a good Beta was a shadow, a supporter, and didn’t need the fame and fortune, the glory of being an Alpha. I had never gone against that, never.
“How do you know that? I didn’t even know about the beast until I met you. Are you telling me that is all fantasy too? Me being your mate?” I knew what she was going for when I was sighing, not knowing what to answer. She got me, and she wasn’t supposed to be my mate. Second chances were rare in my world.
“You realize what you are telling me, that there is a whole other form of packs out there, and we have no clue how they are working?” that made me nervous and itchy, my beast not liking the sound of that at all. There was only one way, and that’s what I had been brought up to believe.
“I’m telling you to believe in me as your mate and not just follow Alpha Daniel blindly, he doesn’t know what's best for us or even you, and I hate that it is tearing you apart…” she shifted back; it was slow and some struggling until she was standing naked on the top of the hood making me drop whatever worries I had in my mind seeing the young girl with long blond hair and a sweet smile stare at me with love in her eyes. She was gorgeous.
“I love you, Benjamin, and…. Please… I want this more than anything.” She was still standing there, waiting on me, biting the inside of her cheek, her beast wanting me to help her, when I smiled back at her beautiful face.
“Okay, Daniel is not going to like me going rogue on him… but… you know what….if you are telling me that there is a way for us to live without the pack bond, I’m sure want to know about it…” she made a giggle coming down when I was holding my arms out, catching her getting down carefully, wrapping her arms around my neck and looking back up like she was happily making me feel like this was the best feeling in the world, miles away what Daniel was pushing on me back at his office.
“Okay, sweetheart. Let’s break the pack bond.” Milly made another smile beaming when she kissed me, knowing that this was going to hurt and there was no going back, but for some reason, I wasn’t afraid, not when she was at my side for the ride.
