Chapter 20
Travis's POV.
For days now, I had noticed the change in Damon. He seemed more distant, more troubled, and I couldn't quite put my finger on the cause. But I had my suspicions.
Damon had always been an open book to me. We had known each other for years, and I had seen him through his highest triumphs and his lowest moments. But this time, something was different. The look in his eyes held a depth of despair I hadn't seen before, not even when he spoke of his father's tragic fate.
My steps carried me to Damon's study, a place where he often retreated when the weight of the world became too much. I knocked gently on the door, waiting for his familiar voice to grant me entry.
"Come in," he called, his voice heavy with exhaustion.
I entered the room, finding him seated at his desk, staring at a piece of paper with a furrowed brow. His eyes flicked up to meet mine, and for a moment, I saw the flicker of the old Damon—the one who could conquer anything with a smile and a determined spirit. But it was fleeting.
"Damon," I began cautiously, "I couldn't help but notice you've been troubled lately. Is there something I can assist you with?"
He sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. "Travis, I don't know who else to turn to. I received an anonymous letter, claiming that Emelia tried to poison me the night of the ball."
The shock hit me like a punch to the gut. Emelia? Poison Damon? It was unthinkable. "That can't be true," I said immediately, shaking my head. "Emelia loves you. She would never do something like that."
"I want to believe that," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But David's words keep echoing in my mind. He said she was playing with me, that she hadn’t truly forgiven me. And now this letter... I don't know what to think."
I took a deep breath, trying to process this information. Damon was right to be cautious, but Emelia had shown nothing but genuine affection for him. "Do you have the letter?" I asked.
He nodded, pulling it out from a drawer and handing it to me. The words were scrawled hastily, almost as if written in a panic. The accusations were damning, but something about it felt off. "Who do you think could have sent this?" I asked, handing it back to him.
"I have no idea," he admitted. "But until I find out the truth, I can't let Emelia know. I can't risk losing her, Travis. Not when she means everything to me."
"I understand," I said, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "But you need to remember that people will go to great lengths to destroy what they envy. Someone might be trying to drive a wedge between you and Emelia."
He nodded, though the doubt in his eyes remained. "I need you to keep an eye on her, Travis. Make sure she's safe. And if you find anything—anything at all—that might explain this, I need to know."
"Of course," I assured him. "I'll do everything I can to get to the bottom of this."
With a heavy heart, I left Damon's study, my mind racing. Emelia had been nothing but kind and sincere since her arrival. The idea of her plotting against Damon seemed absurd. But the letter, combined with David's manipulative words, had planted a seed of doubt in Damon's mind.
As I made my way to Emelia's quarters, I couldn't shake the feeling that something larger was at play. If someone was trying to sabotage their relationship, they were playing a dangerous game. Damon's love for Emelia was fierce, but so was his wrath.
I found Emelia in her room, sitting by the window and gazing out at the garden. She turned to me with a warm smile, her eyes lighting up as she saw me. "Travis, is everything alright?" she asked, her voice full of concern.
"Yes, Emelia," I lied smoothly. "I just wanted to check on you. How are you feeling?"
She shrugged, her smile faltering slightly. "I've been feeling a bit off lately. The medicine you gave me helped, but I'm still not quite myself."
I nodded, making a mental note to look into the medicine she had taken. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to call for me. I'm here to help."
"Thank you, Travis," she said, her smile returning. "You've been so kind to me."
As I left her room, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. Emelia trusted me, and here I was, keeping secrets from her. But it was for the best. If there was any truth to the accusations, it would come to light soon enough. For now, my priority was to protect both Damon and Emelia from whatever forces sought to tear them apart.
The days that followed were tense. I kept a close watch on Emelia, noting her interactions and any signs of distress. She seemed genuinely in love with Damon, and he, despite his doubts, couldn't hide the depth of his feelings for her. They were like two halves of a whole, and it pained me to see them strained by this shadow of suspicion.
One afternoon, while I was in the garden, I overheard a conversation between two servants. They were discussing the night of the ball and how someone had been seen lurking near the kitchen where the drinks were prepared. My heart raced as I realized this could be a lead. I needed to find out more.
I discreetly questioned the servants, piecing together bits of information. A figure in a hooded cloak had been seen slipping in and out of the kitchen that night. No one could identify them, but the description was enough to make me suspicious.
Returning to Damon, I relayed what I had learned. His eyes darkened with anger and determination. "We need to find out who that was," he said, his voice cold and hard. "If someone is trying to sabotage our bond, they will pay dearly."
"I'll keep investigating," I promised. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Damon. I won't let anyone tear you and Emelia apart."
As I left his study, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time. The anonymous letter, the mysterious figure, David's manipulations—everything pointed to a larger conspiracy. And until we uncovered the truth, Damon and Emelia's love would remain under siege.
