Chapter 19

Damon's POV.

The evening sky was painted with hues of purple and gold as I stood by the window in my study, looking out over the estate. My thoughts wandered to Emelia, and a smile crept onto my face. She had brought so much light into my life, and every moment with her felt like a gift.

A knock at the door interrupted my reverie. "Come in," I called, expecting Travis or one of the guards with routine reports. Instead, a young servant entered, holding a sealed envelope.

"An anonymous letter for you, Damon," he said, handing it over before bowing and leaving the room.

Curiosity piqued, I opened the envelope and unfolded the letter. The words, written in a hurried scrawl, sent a chill down my spine.

For a moment, the world around me stopped. My breath caught in my throat, and my heart hammered against my ribcage. Emelia? Tried to poison me? It couldn't be true. The Emelia I knew, the one who had shown me her vulnerabilities and accepted mine, could never do such a thing. But the seed of doubt had been planted, and David's taunting words echoed in my mind.

I crumpled the letter in my hand, fighting the urge to tear it apart. No, this had to be a lie. Someone was trying to drive a wedge between us. But the doubt lingered, gnawing at the edges of my mind. David’s words about Emelia playing with me, about her not truly forgiving me, now seemed more insidious.

I couldn't let Emelia see my turmoil. I had to protect her, even if it meant hiding this terrible doubt from her. With a heavy heart, I slipped the crumpled letter into a drawer and locked it away.

Every glance at Emelia, every touch, every shared smile, now carried a weight of uncertainty. How could she look at me with such love if she had intended to harm me? The contradiction tore at my heart.

I remembered my father, his tragic end, and the curse that seemed to follow our family. It didn't matter if I had a mate; it seemed my fate was written the same. Betrayal, heartache, and a tragic end—was this the legacy I was destined to inherit?

I looked at Emelia, her face serene and innocent. The thought of her betraying me seemed impossible, yet the letter’s words haunted me. My heart ached, torn between love and doubt. I gently brushed a strand of hair from her face, my fingers lingering on her soft skin.

"Emelia," I kept thinking, "I love you so much. Please, tell me this isn’t true."

The only thing I ever wanted was for Emelia to love me, truly and completely. The fear of her betrayal was more than I could bear. The thought that she might have tried to poison me, that her affection could be a facade, made my chest tighten with anguish.

I didn't sleep that night. My mind was a storm of conflicting emotions. By morning, I had resolved to find out the truth, no matter how painful it might be. But I would do it discreetly, without alarming Emelia. If there was any chance this was a cruel trick or a misunderstanding, I didn’t want to hurt her by revealing my doubts.

My heart was breaking, the love I had for Emelia clashing with the fear that she might have been the one to betray me.

Maybe I should confront her, demand the truth. I bear the thought of losing her, even if it meant living with this gnawing doubt.

And so, I continued to smile, to hold her, to pretend that everything was fine. But inside, my heart was in turmoil. The only thing I wanted was for Emelia to love me, truly and unconditionally. But with every passing mimute, the fear grew stronger. My fate seemed sealed, and the shadow of my father's tragic end loomed over me.

I loved her more than anything, but the question remained: did she love me the same? Or was this all a cruel illusion, a prelude to my own downfall? Only time would tell, but the wait was a torment I wasn’t sure I could endure.
