Chapter 63 Celeste
Celeste's POV
No. I didn't decide without thinking. I was not that kind of person.
I realized I didn't want to pretend I didn't know anything since Alpha Eiden told me about the nightmares that plagued him.
Let's just say I still had empathy. I felt sorry for him, having been unable to sleep for months. He deserved a break after a long day at work.
I didn't regret helping him. I didn't mind accompanying him there. I wasn't stupid, and I wouldn't be careless.
“I knew you would tell him.” Beta Dylan is very angry with me. He was the first to know because he came to my office with a file and a box of donuts.
"Why are you helping him? Do you care about him?" Beta Dylan no longer shows me respect. Anger, disappointment, and anxiety made him raise his voice at me.
“Why do you care about him? He rejected you. He chose another woman. He looked down on you. Now he’s nice to you because you’re the mother of his son, and you’ve become beautiful.”
Beta Dylan stared at me intently, his words dragging me back to that painful past.
I’ve never forgotten that, but I’ve come to terms with what happened to Alpha Eiden and me.
My heart was clear of hatred for him. We had Liam, who surely expected us to be close, even if he never expressed it.
“What’s wrong with helping him? He’ll pay for the information. He knows nothing is free in this world.” I raised an eyebrow, completely clueless as to why he was so angry over something like this.
“He doesn’t know who I am, and trust me, he wouldn’t be curious about it,” I said calmly. Beta Dylan was like a fire now; only water could put it out.
“He didn’t ask where I got the information. He just believed me,” I said. Alpha Eiden was so frustrated that he would do whatever anyone told him to do.
“Are you sure about that?” Beta Dylan narrowed his eyes skeptically. “There’s no way he wouldn’t wonder who you are and how you got that information.”
“Why would he wonder about that?” I remained seated in my office chair, my gaze fixed on Beta Dylan. "He just needs to think I'm a wealthy businesswoman with connections that can connect me to rogue intel."
I didn't think about whether Alpha Eiden would suspect me. Overthinking it would only make my head spin. I'd rather focus on work.
"You're so relaxed, as if you already know him very well," Beta Dylan snorted. Then he stared at me deeply, hoping to read my thoughts. "Do you love him?"
The strange question suddenly came out of his mouth. Emotions can really mess with a person's head.
"I don't understand why you have such thoughts." I shook my head, a sigh escaping my lips. "I was just helping him. I felt sorry for him. I imagined what it would be like if I were the one having nightmares."
Beta Dylan remained silent for a few minutes, just staring deeper into my eyes as if hypnotizing me.
I rose from my chair, my brows drawn together, never breaking eye contact as he circled my desk and stopped right in front of me.
My heart was pounding with anxiety and confusion, but I tried to remain as calm as water in a glass.
I'd be lying if I said Beta Dylan wasn't terrifying now. He was as ferocious as a wolf on the battlefield.
"Have you forgotten how I feel about you?" Beta Dylan gripped my upper arms, his jaw clenched and his eyes red with anger. "Are you trying to upset me on purpose? Do you know how much I want to kill your ex-mate?"
I shuddered, unable to blink. The atmosphere was tense. I couldn't take it easy anymore.
“Don’t do something stupid like that. I only helped him because I still have a conscience. I don’t like seeing people around me suffer.” I tried to pull my arm away from his, but he was too strong.
“I’m suffering now. I’m hurt. I don’t like you caring about him,” Beta Dylan growled. “I’ve been by your side all this time. I understand you. Why do you care about that man who knows nothing about you?”
By the Moon Goddess, I was too lazy to respond.
“He doesn’t know about me because I didn’t tell him. I set a boundary he couldn’t cross.” I glared at him, my chest heaving. Unconsciously, I was getting carried away.
“Stop making a big deal out of this.” I pulled away from him roughly before his nails dug into my upper arm. Then I took a step back.
“Why are you always so scared? We have spy agents that can monitor him day and night.” I changed the subject because I didn’t want to hear anything about his feelings for me.
However, he still brought it up.
"You can't pretend you don't know how my heart beats when I'm with you," Beta Dylan said, his voice aching with pain. He touched his chest, his eyes glistening with tears.
"I regret not telling you how I felt after Benedict died. I should have done so before you fell for your ex-mate." Beta Dylan squeezed his chest with a heartbreaking, trembling voice.
He would never believe me if I said I didn't have any feelings for Alpha Eiden because he wanted my heart to belong to him.
However, I had to be firm with him. I couldn't let him keep hoping I would return his feelings someday.
“I’m sorry.” I clenched my hands together. “I can’t love you. I’ll always see you as my brother-in-law. You’re Benedict’s younger brother.”
Beta Dylan laughed sarcastically.
“Why do you say that so confidently? You don’t know what will happen tomorrow, the day after, and beyond! I will make you love me,” Beta Dylan said with determination burning in his eyes.
I stared at him expressionlessly. I was so tired of talking to him about this. I never imagined the younger brother of my late second mate would love me.
‘He’s insane. I want to claw his face.’ My wolf refused to let me fall for Beta Dylan. We didn’t want to hurt Benedict, and I had no interest in him whatsoever.
Beta Dylan no longer had a problem with me helping Alpha Eiden. I don't know what made him change his mind after leaving my office.
Gamma Silas and Delta Giana had assigned two agents to escort me, my two sons, and Alpha Eiden to the Purple Forest Group, and five agents to monitor us from a distance.
I will be bringing my two sons with me tomorrow. So, I told them what Alpha Eiden had been going through over the past few months. I had already gotten permission from the man.
“So Alpha Eiden can’t sleep because he’s having nightmares,” Liam said sadly, his face full of pity. “No wonder he often has dark circles under his eyes.”
“I run to Mommy’s room when I have nightmares. They’re scary.” Levi hugged my arm tightly, his eyes wide, remembering his last nightmare. “What about Alpha Eiden? Does he have a mom?”
Levi’s question was simple, and he didn’t fully understand its meaning, but it successfully made Liam and me feel Alpha Eiden’s suffering even more when night fell and drowsiness set in.
“Therefore, tomorrow we will accompany Alpha Eiden to meet someone who can keep him away from nightmares and will make him able to dream sweet dreams again,” I said. That was my sincere wish for my ex-mate.
