Chapter 116
Kathy woke up hearing little cries. She quickly got off the couch to see Melody crying in the playpen with her brother, so she picked her up and wrapped her in a blanket. Then, Kathy gently started rocking Melody to calm her down, whispering soothing words until the cries faded away and Melody nestled peacefully in her arms.
“It’s okay, Melody, Mommy’s got you. You’re going to wake your brothers up—I can see that you’re going to be a fighter. I’m going to try my best to train you and your brothers,” Kathy murmured softly, brushing a wisp of hair from Melody’s forehead as she continued to sway gently.
Kathy smiled at Melody, who was reaching up with tiny hands, trying to grab hold of the necklace around her neck. She gently stopped her, chuckling softly, but as Melody opened her mouth, Kathy caught a glimpse of something unusual—her gums were showing what looked like little fangs coming in. It struck Kathy as odd that Melody would get those before her two front teeth. That wasn’t the reason Melody had been upset, but curiosity nudged Kathy to carefully slip her finger into Melody’s mouth. Sure enough, she could feel the small, pointed fangs, still soft beneath her fingertip. Without wasting a moment, Kathy held Melody close and, still cradling her, got up from the couch and hurried into the kitchen to grab her phone. Her hands trembled slightly as she dialed her father’s number, needing answers to this strange development.
“Kathy, you need something?”
“Yes, um…I notice that Melody has these two fangs coming before her two front teeth,” Kathy said hesitantly, her voice laced with confusion. She paused, glancing down at Melody as she tried to make sense of the strange sight. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Is that normal for babies?”
“Really that odd,”
“I could be wrong here, but I need to do some blood work first,” her father replied, his tone thoughtful yet concerned. “Let me get my kit and I’ll head over. We’ll figure out what’s going on with Melody together.”
“This is my theory; Melody might not be just a werewolf but a vampire, but I can’t be sure. If you and Mom aren’t busy, could you both come over?” Kathy’s voice trembled with uncertainty as she glanced again at Melody’s tiny fangs, hoping her father would have the answers she needed.
“I am on my way there once I finish up with the paperwork,”
“I will be waiting,”
Kathy hang up the phone, Melody trying to get her mother attention by moving around in the blanket until Kathy notice then look down.
“You probably need a diaper change, let’s get you cleaned up,” Kathy said, offering a gentle smile as she gathered Melody up in her arms. She tried to keep her voice soothing, hoping to distract Melody from the earlier commotion as she headed toward the changing table.
After taking off Melody's dirty clothes and diaper, Kathy placed her gently in the small chair on the bathroom floor. She was grateful for the drain installed there, which made cleaning up the littles so much easier. As Kathy began rinsing Melody, another cry echoed from the living room—her sons had awakened. Moving quickly, Kathy left the bathroom, scooped the boys carefully out of the playpen, and brought them into the bathroom so they could wash up alongside their sister. Just as Kathy finished taking off Leon and Kai’s clothes and diapers to give them a wash, the warm water made the boys pee right in their chair. She sighed, quickly grabbing their wash clothes to clean up the mess while keeping an eye on them. Before she could finish washing them up, the doorbell rang unexpectedly, making her pause. She didn’t want to leave the little ones unattended, so she called out loudly, hoping the visitor would wait while she secured her children.
Kathy used her power to open the door to hear foot step walking to her house and closed the door behind that person until she heard someone called out her name.
“Kathy, where are you?”
“Dad, I am in the bathroom giving the babies washing up. Can you help me?”
The footsteps came toward the bathroom, and Kathy turned around to see her parents standing there with smiles on their faces. Relief washed over her as she realized help had arrived at last. Her mother gave her a reassuring nod, and her father gently set his kit down, ready to assist.
Her father chuckled softly as he took in the scene. “I see the babies got you all wet,” he teased, glancing at the splashes on Kathy’s shirt and the puddles on the floor. Kathy let out a small laugh, grateful for the lightheartedness amid the chaos.
“Thanks,”
After the babies were all dry, lotion, and dressed in fresh diapers and clean clothes, Kathy and her parents settled them gently on the living room floor. She handed each little one their favorite toys, watching as their eyes lit up with delight and small giggles filled the room. Confident her parents were keeping an eye on the children, Kathy excused herself to quickly change into a dry shirt and pants. Moments later, she returned to the living room, feeling refreshed and grateful for the extra set of hands as she joined her family in watching the babies play.
“I explain to your mother that Melody might have a vampire gene,”
“How can that have happened if Maria slept with Noah?
“Mom, it could happen if she slept with the man at the same time,”
“Well, I can draw Melody blood to see,”
“She is not going to like it,” Kathy murmured, concern flickering across her face as she glanced at Melody playing on the floor. Her father offered a sympathetic smile, understanding the challenge ahead, but nodded firmly. “It’s important, sweetheart,” he replied gently, “We’ll make it quick and as easy as possible for her.”
Kathy just nodded her head so Seth could draw Melody's blood. She gently picked Melody up from the floor, cradling her in her arms as she rolled up the little girl's sleeve. Once Seth inserted the needle into Melody's arm, she didn't cry; instead, she looked up at her grandfather and smiled, as if it wasn't hurting her at all. Everyone was shocked by Melody's calmness, but once Seth was done, he quietly placed a small bandage over the spot. He then put the tube containing Melody's blood into a clear bag and tucked it safely into his kit, ready for the next step.
