Chapter 58 A new life
Chapter 58: A New Life
Florence still couldn't believe what had just happened. She pinched herself to be sure it was real.
Still overwhelmed, she dialed Allan's number and asked him to take his siblings, book a cab and come to the address she would send to him.
Maybe when the kids got here, then she would accept that all this is really.
After about 30 minutes, Allan called his mum and told her they were in front of the address.
Florence went to the door and opened it.
“Come in guys” she said.
“Ma this is?” Allan asked confused as he stepped into the house with his siblings.
Inside the living room, the children took in their environment still confused.
“I asked you guys to come over because I wanted to be sure I wasn't dreaming.
I want us to explore together, then I would tell you what's going on.
Come on let's start from the kitchen ” Florence led the children towards the kitchen.
The kitchen was well put together with everything in it. It had a mini pantry that was already fully stocked with groceries.
Octavia opened the double door fridge and noticed it was stock full and from the look of it, it was carefully stocked to include things suitable for Rema's diet.
Next they went to the first bedroom. It had an O on the door and Octavia suspiciously and excitedly opened the door.
Everyone stopped and gasped.
The room was decorated in warm pink and cream. It had a four-poster canopy bed with the poster of a dancer on the wall behind the bed.
By the left corner there was reading table with a computer and an iPad. And by the right, a small vanity table with a soft pink cushion.
She saw a mini closet and excitedly opened it. Inside, she saw a complete set of uniforms and school shoes.
In the closet were also different clothings all in her size and style. And finally a bathroom that was a perfect fit just like the rest of the room.
Opposite Octavia's room, another door had a R on the door.
Rema took the lead this time and entered what he presumed was his room.
This was similar in size to Octavia's. It was painted in two different shades of blue that complimented eachother.
His bed had the poster of space and just above his reading table was a frame that read: DARE TO DREAM.
Every other detail was practically the same with that of Octavia's but the masculine version.
Beside Rema's room was the next door with an A and knowing the drill, Allan led everyone into his room.
His was slightly bigger than the twins room. And totally different in style.
He didn't have a poster canopy bed. In its place was a king size bed with two bedside drawers.
The room was painted in a monochromic black, white, and gray color scheme.
It had a soft Persian gray rug on the floor by the side of the bed.
And a closet that held clothes tailored to suit Allan's bad boy aesthetics.
A mini study corner that had a built-in floor length shelve full with medical books. A study table with a computer and a small trolley full of art supplies.
Allan slowly took it all in. Whoever designed this room had paid attention to even the tinest details.
The last room was a little farther down the hall. Far enough to give privacy but close enough to reach the other rooms in case of an emergency.
This room was the masters bedroom. It was the biggest room in the house.
It was painted in a warm cream and beige color.
It had a Queen sized bed with a bed bench.
A vanity table with carefully selected skincare products.
A walk-in closet full of clothes, shoes, and bags for a woman in her late forties.
A huge bathroom with a bathtub when you feel like taking a soak after a stressful day, and a shower for those mornings when you are in a haste.
It was the perfect room to come back to for a peaceful rest.
Florence took in all in, this room was designed to make her feel like a queen.
When they got back to the living room, Allan asked the question on everyone's mind.
“Ma, what is going on?”
“This is our Christmas Miracle” Florence replied with a choked voice.
She went on to tell her children everything the Nixon's had done.
Even as she recounted it, it still felt surreal.
Their rent at the old house was due to go out the next day and Florence had thought about how they would have to manage through the holidays.
Suddenly she found herself in an apartment a hundred times better than her rentals.
It was fully furnished and all they had to do was live in it. They didn't have to buy anything.
Varney had thought of everything. He wanted them to have a fresh start.
When Rema heard everything his mother said. How he would start a new school and how his mother didn't have to worry so much about his medicines anymore, he couldn't help but shed tears.
He knew how hard his mother and brother worked to be able to afford his medicine.
Now he had been given a new life. Perhaps now he could dare to dream.
Octavia didn't know how to feel. She had always just gone with the flow and found happiness even in the bleakest situation.
They had a new house in a clean neighborhood. At least she wouldn't worry about Rema falling ill so much.
She was starting at a new private school that her mother didn't have to worry about paying her fees.
She saw a heavy load lift off her mother and brothers shoulders. Maybe now they could truly start to live for themselves.
Allan sat on the couch still trying to wrap his head around everything.
Since the year he turned 12, his life changed. He watched his mum slowly disappear and become the shadow of herself just so she could provide for them.
He gave up his dream and took on another so he could feel closer to Rema and be a support system to his mother.
Just like his life changed in one night all those years ago. It was about to change again this night...
He drove his family back to their old neighborhood to pick up just some family memories.
Everything else was left behind signaling the end of their old life.
And as they stepped into their new home, they knelt down, held hands as a family and offered thanks to God for the opportunity to begin a new life.
