Chapter 139: The beginning, The before & The end
Cold stone pressed against Seraphine's skin as unconsciousness slowly loosened its grip.
Voices echoed somewhere far away.
Whispers.
Chanting.
Power humming through the air like a living heartbeat.
She drifted between sleep and awareness until-
A violent tremor shook the ground.
Her eyes snapped open.
Moonlight flickered across towering cavern walls. Ancient runes burned along the floor beneath her, glowing with unstable light. For a moment, her mind struggled to understand what she was seeing.
Then she felt it.
Her wrists.
Bound tightly.
Her ankles were restrained with glowing magical chains.
Panic surged through her.
"What-?" Her voice cracked as she tried to move. "Where am I?"
Memory rushed back in fragments.
The butterfly.
Damien.
The sudden strike.
Her breath hitched.
Ahead of her stood two figures.
Cressida lingered several steps away, watching carefully. And closer to the massive stone arch carved into the cavern wall stood Elera-
No.
Something about her felt wrong.
Dark energy coiled around her hands as she raised them toward the enormous structure before them.
The Forbidden Gate.
Its surface pulsed with ancient symbols, sealed by layers of magic older than the academy itself.
Seraphine's heart dropped.
"No..." she whispered.
Melinda, wearing Elera's body, lifted her hands higher.
"Step back," she instructed calmly.
Cressida obeyed immediately, retreating several paces.
The air thickened.
Magic gathered.
Seraphine suddenly felt a sharp pull deep inside her chest.
Energy began draining from her body, invisible threads of glowing power streaming from her heart toward Melinda.
She gasped in pain.
"What are you doing?" she cried, struggling against the restraints.
Melinda began chanting.
Ancient words rolled from her tongue, heavy and forbidden. Each syllable made the cavern tremble as the power she siphoned from Seraphine surged into the Gate.
The runes ignited one by one.
The ground shook harder.
Cracks of light split across the sealed arch.
The noise, thunderous and unnatural, jolted Seraphine fully awake.
Her eyes widened in horror.
"You're opening it," she shouted. "Stop!"
Melinda didn't respond.
The chanting only grew louder.
"Are you crazy?" Seraphine screamed, panic breaking through her voice. "You don't know what you're doing! You're opening the Forbidden Gate!"
The cavern roared as energy spiraled upward.
"You'll release the Aetherstar!" she pleaded. "It will destroy everything, Aetherborn, the academy, everyone! Please stop!"
Her struggles intensified, chains rattling violently.
"STOP!"
The chanting ceased.
Silence fell, sudden and heavy.
Melinda slowly turned toward her.
A smile curved her lips.
"Oh," she said softly, "my dear Seraphine... you're awake."
Seraphine glared at her, breath shaking. "Why would you do this? Do you even understand what you're releasing?"
Melinda walked closer, dark magic still flickering around her fingers.
"Thank you," she said calmly. "Your energy made this possible. Only the Aetherborn can control the Aethercurrent... and only that power can unlock the Gate."
Seraphine froze.
Realization struck.
"You used me."
Melinda tilted her head. "You could have opened it willingly for me once."
Confusion crossed Seraphine's face.
"What are you talking about?"
A low laugh escaped Melinda.
"I suppose you wouldn't recognize me like this," she said. "After all... I'm borrowing someone else's body."
Her eyes glowed with ancient darkness.
"It's me."
A pause.
"Melinda."
The name struck like lightning.
Seraphine's breath caught. "That's impossible... How-"
"Am I in this body?" Melinda finished. "Yes. I took someone else's body, you can't blame me, I happen to understand forbidden magic."
Seraphine stared, shock flooding her expression.
"You tried to stop me before," Melinda continued. "But now... you've opened the Gate yourself."
"I didn't-" Seraphine began, but her words died as the cavern exploded with light.
The Gate cracked open.
A deafening roar echoed through the underground chamber.
Blinding energy poured outward as the massive doors slowly separated, ancient seals shattering like glass.
The earth trembled violently.
Wind spiraled inward toward the opening.
From within the Gate came darkness deeper than night, alive, breathing, endless.
Seraphine's voice trembled.
"No... no, no..."
Something moved inside.
Huge.
Shifting.
Watching.
A shape began to emerge through the light, neither fully solid nor fully shadowed. Energy twisted around it like burning stars collapsing into themselves.
The temperature dropped instantly.
Even Melinda stepped back slightly, awe flashing across her face.
A voice echoed from beyond the Gate.
Not spoken.
Felt.
Ancient.
Hungry.
The air fractured as glowing fragments of cosmic power spread outward.
Seraphine whispered the name in terror.
"The... Aetherstar."
The creature's presence pressed against reality itself: monstrous, divine, and utterly wrong.
Its form began taking shape beyond the threshold.
The cavern trembled under the weight of something ancient returning to existence.
Light and darkness twisted together as the being fully emerged from the opened Gate - vast, radiant, and terrifying beyond comprehension.
Seraphine could barely breathe.
The Aetherstar hovered above the shattered threshold, its form shifting like living starlight wrapped in shadow. Galaxies seemed to burn beneath its surface, power folding endlessly into itself.
Melinda stared in awe, madness gleaming in her eyes.
She turned slowly toward Seraphine, smiling.
"Well," she said calmly, brushing dust from her dress as if nothing extraordinary stood before them, "this is where my true plan begins."
Seraphine's chest rose and fell rapidly. "You've already destroyed everything!"
Melinda laughed softly.
"No, dear Aetherborn. I'm saving it."
She stepped closer, raising her hands as dark magic gathered around her palms.
"My intention was never to let the Aetherstar roam free," she continued. "I only needed it awakened long enough to claim its power."
Seraphine's eyes widened.
"You're insane."
"Power," Melinda corrected gently, "belongs to those brave enough to take it."
Her gaze hardened.
"And once again... I'll need your energy."
Pain exploded through Seraphine's body.
A violent pull ripped magic from her core as glowing streams of Aethercurrent burst from her chest, flowing toward Melinda like threads of liquid light.
Seraphine screamed.
"No-stop!"
Melinda began chanting, ancient incantations spilling from her lips as she redirected Seraphine's stolen energy toward the forming Aetherstar.
Symbols ignited in the air.
Power collided.
The cavern shook violently.
"Yes..." Melinda whispered, eyes glowing brighter. "It hasn't fully stabilized yet. It's weak. Perfect."
Energy lashed toward the Aetherstar, wrapping around its unfinished form as she attempted to bind it.
"For centuries," she said breathlessly, "this power has waited. Today... it becomes mine."
The magic struck the Aetherstar.
For one single heartbeat-
Silence.
Then the being moved.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
A massive arm of condensed starlight extended outward.
Reality warped around the motion.
Melinda's smile faltered.
"What-?"
The Aetherstar turned its gaze upon her.
A pressure filled the cavern, ancient, absolute, merciless.
Without a word... without effort...
It lifted one glowing hand.
A pulse of energy flashed.
And Melinda exploded.
Light burst outward like a collapsing star.
Her body disintegrated instantly, scattering into glowing fragments that vanished before they could touch the ground.
Gone.
No scream.
No resistance.
Just... erased.
Seraphine froze in horror.
A single fraction of the Aetherstar's power had destroyed Melinda completely.
Behind them, Cressida gasped.
Fear overtook her instantly.
"I-I didn't sign up for this!" she cried, turning and running blindly into the tunnels, fleeing for her life.
The Aetherstar didn't even look at her.
Its attention had already shifted.
Toward Seraphine.
The air grew impossibly heavy.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears as its cosmic gaze locked onto her.
Fear crawled through every part of her body.
The prophecy.
It was real.
And she was standing alone before something capable of ending worlds.
"I..." her voice trembled. "I can't fight you..."
The Aetherstar drifted closer, each movement bending light itself.
Ancient energy surged around its hand as power began gathering, dense, lethal, inevitable.
It was preparing to strike.
Just like it had done to Melinda.
Seraphine's breath shook violently.
Is this how it ends?
She thought of the academy.
Her friends.
Lyra. Mina. Caleb. Lucien. Alaric. Kade. Damien.
A strange warmth flickered deep inside her chest.
The Aethercurrent responded.
Gold light pulsed faintly beneath her skin.
The creature paused.
It's forming an attack hesitated.
As if... recognizing her.
The chains binding her wrists suddenly cracked.
Energy burst outward instinctively from her body.
The prophecy awakened fully.
A voice echoed inside her mind, ancient, layered, familiar.
Aetherborn... Vessel of Balance...
Her eyes widened as power surged uncontrollably through her veins.
The Aetherstar raised its hand again.
Magic condensed into a collapsing sphere of cosmic destruction.
Seraphine gasped.
"I don't know how to stop you," she whispered, tears forming, "but I won't die like this."
The attack was released.
Blinding light rushed toward her-
And at that exact moment-
Her power erupted.
