Chapter 49: Forty Nine
Chapter Forty Nine
“Well guess who got more jail years?” Amanda strolled in after Jennifer into her office. Jennifer took her seat and took a playful spin on her chair before facing Amanda who had her brows up.
“What?”
“You seem less serious today, what’s up with you?” Amanda sat down.
“I don’t know, I just feel different. Happier. For no reason.” Jennifer said all smiles.
“It is good to see you this way after a long while. So, Detective Sanders just called me. The trial was finally held yesterday.”
“Oh yeah, that’s true. I think someone mentioned something like that some time last week.”
“I am that someone.” Jennifer grinned sheepishly at her friend who seemed to look a tad annoyed. “Anyway, she got fifteen years more.”
Jennifer looked up from her phone. “Who are we talking about again?”
Amanda frowned for a second, snatched the phone in her hand and sat back. “Hey! I was checking something on that.”
“Stop pretending this isn’t your life Jennifer, it doesn’t help you at all.”
Jennifer rolled her eyes. “So, what helps me? Remembering constantly that I was almost killed by my husband and my ‘step sister’?” She said the two last words with severe bitterness.
“No. What helps you right now is accepting your life as you have found it to be. Then you find a way to make things better for you along the line.”
“It is easier to say Mandy. I hurt here.” Jennifer touched her chest area.
“A lot. Everything that has happened to me in the past months has been nothing but…”
Amanda interrupted her. “Devastating? Heart breaking? Terrible? Painful? Freaking awful? Jennifer you need to realize that this is a situation where in life someone has to go through bad happenings. It is a law of life Jennifer. You have to go through both the bad and the good situations in life. It is how one grows. It sucks that your kind of bad situation was a terribly horrifying big bomb, but look at you, you survived it. And you will continue to survive it as long as you remember that bomb in the nearest future and smirk at it because you missed its hit. That is how you grow girl.”
Jennifer looked at her friend amusedly as she talked. Even though what she was saying was a bit uncoordinated to her, she still saw the sense in it. Jennifer knew though, that running away from what she was facing wasn’t going to help her, but it felt good ignoring her problems for a second. “When did you start talking like Charlie?”
“Who is Charlie?”
“Oh he is a friend I met at Hamesia at a club.”
“You went to a club?” Amanda looked so surprised.
“Yes?”
“Okay, I know I haven’t still heard stories about your life back at Hamesia, but learning that you went to a club makes me want to know more because the Jennifer Lewis I know would never ever go to a club.”
“Am I that bad?”
“Honestly you don’t want to know. Why do you think I stopped inviting you to parties?”
Jennifer grinned at her friend.
“Can I have my phone back now miss?” Amanda made a mocking face before handing her the phone. Jennifer pouted as she stared at the black clear screen of the phone. “You know, Amanda, I am not trying to run away from my problems, I… I just want to close my eyes for a day and forget about them for a while. Can’t I do that?”
Amanda’s eyes went soft and she reached over for Jennifer’s hand, placing her hand assuredly on hers.
“Of course sweetheart, you are allowed to do that.”
“Oh good, I thought I was going to hear another unexpected motivational bullshit from you.”
“Hey! Don’t call my words bullshit, you know I was making a lot of sense, I saw how your face changed.” Amanda protested, removing her hand, Jennifer smiled apologetically.
“But really, there is nothing wrong with pretending for a second that your problems don’t exist. Just don’t run away from them, that’s my own.”
“Okay mommy.”
“But you are fine right?”
“Of course I am. Why not?” Jennifer asked.
“I just have this feeling that you are still shaken up by your meeting with Hannah.”
“It has been three weeks Amanda, I hardly remember what we talked about.”
“But you certainly wouldn’t forget all what she did. I have been watching you Jennifer, there are these little moments you just extraordinarily go balls deep into your thoughts. Remember the other day, I hit a freaking metal table with a hammer after I had shouted your name a million times, but you kept staring out of that window, lost in thoughts. It is scary Jennifer and I think you should seek some help.”
“Is it that bad?” Jennifer felt her heart begin to pound in fear for herself after she had heard what Amanda said. She noticed it too. Just the day before, she was about to cut an apple when she suddenly travelled into her thoughts when she came to her senses, the knife’s sharp edge was on her wrist.
“Yes.”
Jennifer sighed. “I think is should sell the mansion.”
“What? Why?”
“I am the only one currently living there and with this new disturbing mental state of mine, it wouldn’t be advisable to stay in such a huge, empty house.”
“You can just rent it out or something. Selling it so soon is not something I would advice. Just focus right now on getting a smaller house where people are.”
“I will still live alone even in the smaller house.” Jennifer pointed out, her elbows resting on the table.
“That is why you need to get you a man.”
“Or a cat. And a dog too.”
“Seriously? That’s like attempting to be an old woman at a young age. Look at you Jenny, all pretty and sexy; when we work on the sexy part. Trust me, men will drool at your sight when you enter their den.”
“Enter their den? What do you mean?”
Amanda got up, beaming. “All I can say is right now we are going to get you changed then we will go look for your smaller house. And maybe, just maybe we would hit a club or two.”
“Oh no, no.”
‘’I said maybe. I am not forcing you here.” Amana grabbed her hand bag.
“Get your ass off that chair, we need to get you home.” Jenifer got up, giving her friend a fake excited smile. She knew Amanda was going to find a way to drag her to the club or clubs somehow.
“On the way, you can tell me about Hamesia.” Amanda said as they walked out of her office.
----------------------------------------------------
“It is unfair.” Amanda pouted.
“What is?”
“You got to meet so many fine dudes in my absence, I am jealous.”
“So many, I just met five men girl.”
“Yes and they are all good looking. I mean I met Mark and Silvanus and they look…” Amanda looked dreamy. “Especially Silvanus, he has this dark look to him you know, it is just sexy.”
“You remember you are engaged right?” Jennifer threw a brow up.
“Let a girl dream Jennifer. Let her dream.”
Jennifer noticed two jeeps in front of the mansion’s gate. “That’s strange, I don’t think I was expecting anyone today.”
“Well, lets get down and see who they are.” The car halted behind one of the jeeps and they both got down.
“Uh… hello?” The door of the driver side of one of the jeeps opened and a strong looking leg came out first making Jennifer wonder who it might be. When the man finally made his full appearance, Jennifer’s heart began to race as soon as she saw his face which looked just as she remembered it. She did not know what exactly it was she was feeling at that moment. She just couldn’t classify the feeling, so she just hardened her face so the confusing emotions inside her won’t give off a message she didn’t want to give off.
“Why are you here?”
