Chapter 86 – The Cage of Smoke (Dante's POV)
Chapter 86 – The Cage of Smoke (Dante's POV)
\# Chapter 88 – Blood and Ashes (Dante & Eve's POV)
DANTE'S POV
The phone call comes at three in the morning. I'm sitting in my office, going through files. Trying to figure out which government officials might be on Marco's payroll.
"Boss," Tony says. "You need to see the news."
I turn on the television. The cemetery massacre is all over every channel. Aerial footage of body bags being loaded into ambulances. Reporters talking about gang violence spilling into sacred ground.
But that's not what makes my blood run cold.
It's the interview they're showing. A city councilman I've never heard of. Talking about how this violence proves the city needs federal intervention.
"We can no longer allow organized crime to terrorize our citizens," he says. "I'm calling for a federal task force to clean up these streets once and for all."
I know what this really means. Marco's government allies are making their move. Using Eve's cemetery showdown as an excuse to bring in federal agents. Agents who work for him.
My phone rings. Eve's number.
"You see the news?" she asks without saying hello.
"Yeah. Where are you?"
"Safe house on the east side. We need to talk."
"Agreed. But not over the phone."
"Pier 47. One hour."
The line goes dead.
I grab my coat and gun. This night is about to get a lot worse.
EVE'S POV
The pier is empty except for fog and the smell of dead fish. Perfect place for a conversation that might get us both killed.
I see Dante's car pull up. Two men get out with him. Bodyguards. Smart move.
I brought backup too. Maria and three of my best shooters. They're positioned on nearby rooftops with sniper rifles.
Dante walks toward me. His face looks like he aged ten years since yesterday.
"Hell of a show at the cemetery," he says.
"They tried to kidnap me. I sent a message."
"The message was received. All over the city. All over the country."
He lights a cigarette with shaking hands.
"We got problems, Eve. Big problems."
"Bigger than Marco trying to have me kidnapped?"
"Much bigger. Vargas talked before he died. Told me things that change everything."
Dante tells me about the interrogation. About Marco's government connections. About how this isn't just a mafia war anymore.
"Senators?" I ask. "FBI directors?"
"Dozens of them. Maybe hundreds. Marco's been building a shadow network for years."
The fog rolls in thicker. I can barely see the water now.
"There's more," Dante says. "After your cemetery performance, they're calling for federal intervention. A task force to clean up organized crime."
"Let me guess. The task force will be run by people on Marco's payroll."
"Exactly. They're going to use legitimate government power to destroy both our families. Make it look legal and righteous."
I drop my cigarette and crush it under my heel.
"So what do you propose?"
"Temporary alliance. Pool our resources. Take down Marco's network before they can consolidate power."
"And then what? Go back to trying to kill each other?"
"If we're lucky enough to survive that long, yeah."
I look out at the dark water. Thinking about the child with Marco's ring. About how deep this conspiracy goes. About how many innocent people might die before it's over.
"There's something else," I say. "At the funeral, I saw a kid. Maybe eight years old. He had Marco's ring."
Dante's face goes pale. "He's using children now."
"As messengers. Maybe worse."
"Jesus Christ. What kind of monster are we dealing with?"
"The kind that kills federal agents' daughters to ensure loyalty."
Dante stares at me. "Vargas told you about that?"
"No. But I can read between the lines. Marco's not just ruthless anymore. He's completely insane."
We stand in silence for a few minutes. The fog makes everything look like a ghost world. Maybe that's what we're becoming. Ghosts of the old criminal order, being replaced by something much worse.
"Okay," I say finally. "Temporary alliance. But I have conditions."
"Name them."
"No interference in my operations. No trying to control my people. And when this is over, we go back to neutral territories. No expansion wars."
"Agreed. My conditions are similar. Plus, we share all intelligence. No holding back."
"Deal."
We shake hands. His grip is firm and cold.
"So where do we start?" I ask.
"With the list Vargas gave me. We identify every government official on Marco's payroll. Figure out who we can flip, who we can blackmail, and who we need to eliminate."
"Elimination might be tricky. Killing senators tends to attract attention."
"Then we get creative. Scandals. Bribery charges. Tax evasion. There are lots of ways to destroy a political career without pulling a trigger."
I nod. "What about Marco himself?"
"He's the head of the snake. Cut that off, and the body dies."
"Easier said than done. He's been three steps ahead of us this whole time."
"Maybe. But now we know why. His government protection is also his weakness. Those people expect him to stay in the shadows. If we drag him into the light, they'll abandon him to save themselves."
A car pulls up at the end of the pier. Black sedan with tinted windows. Government plates.
"Shit," Dante says. "We need to go. Now."
His bodyguards are already moving toward their car. I whistle once, sharp and loud. My sniper team will know that means extract immediately.
"My place," I tell Dante. "Tomorrow night. We'll start planning."
"Which safe house?"
"The one Marco doesn't know about yet."
We run in opposite directions toward our cars. The black sedan follows Dante. Two more appear behind me.
This is it. The shadow war has begun.
DANTE'S POV - THE CHASE
The federal agents stay exactly three car lengths behind me. Professional surveillance. They're not trying to arrest me. Just letting me know they're watching.
My phone buzzes. Text message from an unknown number.
We know about your meeting. We know about your alliance. It won't save you. - M
Marco. He has eyes everywhere. Even on a fog-covered pier in the middle of the night.
I take a sharp left into an industrial district. The sedan follows. Another text.
The child sends his regards. Sweet dreams. - M
The child from the cemetery. Marco's new weapon.
I pull into an abandoned warehouse parking lot and stop. The sedan stops too, about fifty yards away.
I get out of my car with my hands visible. Not surrendering. Just showing I'm not looking for a fight.
Yet.
One of the agents gets out. Young guy in a cheap suit. Probably FBI.
"Mr. Romano," he calls out. "Agent Johnson, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We'd like to have a word."
"Talk."
"In private."
I walk halfway between our cars. He does the same.
"Your meeting tonight was very interesting," he says.
"What meeting?"
"The one with Eve Marconi. The one where you discussed forming an alliance against Marco Rosetti."
So they were listening. Electronic surveillance. Maybe satellite feeds.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Mr. Romano, let's skip the denials. We have video. Audio. Everything."
He pulls out a tablet and shows me footage of the pier. Clear images of me and Eve shaking hands.
"Nice technology," I say. "Government funding must be good these days."
"It is. Especially when we're hunting terrorists."
"Terrorists?"
"That's how this will be classified. A terrorist conspiracy between two crime families. Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless you cooperate. Give us Marco. Help us take down his network."
I laugh. Actually laugh out loud.
"You want me to work with the FBI?"
"Why not? You're already working with your worst enemy. What's one more unlikely alliance?"
He has a point. This whole situation is so twisted that working with federal agents almost makes sense.
"What kind of cooperation?" I ask.
"Information. Access. Help us identify Marco's government contacts."
"And in return?"
"Immunity. Protection. A chance to rebuild your legitimate businesses."
"What about Eve?"
"What about her?"
"Same deal for her?"
Agent Johnson smiles. "That depends on how reasonable she's feeling."
"I'll need to think about it."
"Don't think too long. This offer expires soon."
He walks back to his car. Pauses before getting in.
"Mr. Romano? One more thing."
"Yeah?"
"Be careful who you trust. Even your new allies might not be what they seem."
The sedans drive away, leaving me alone in the empty parking lot.
I light another cigarette and think about what just happened.
Marco has government agents on his payroll. But apparently, some government agents want to take him down. The question is: which ones can I trust?
And what did Agent Johnson mean about Eve not being what she seems?
I get back in my car and drive toward home. But I take a long, winding route. Checking for more surveillance.
The war just got a lot more complicated. Again.
Tomorrow night, I meet with Eve to plan our next move. But first, I need to figure out who's really on which side.
In this game, the wrong choice doesn't just mean death.
It means everyone you care about dies too.
