Chapter 81: "Loyalty's Price" ## POV: Eve
\# CHAPTER 81 – "Loyalty's Price"
\## POV: Eve
They bring Carlos in at midnight.
Tied to a chair. Face beaten bloody. One eye swollen shut. But still alive. Still breathing. Still looking at me with trust I probably don't deserve.
"First trial," Vincent announces like he's hosting a game show instead of orchestrating torture. "Loyalty."
"What's the test?"
"Simple choice. Your friend here has information we need. Names of Romano loyalists still hiding in the city. People who might cause problems if they decide to avenge your death."
"And?"
"You make him talk or he dies slow. Either way we get what we want."
I look at Carlos. Kid who's been with me since the beginning. Who's saved my life more times than I can count. Who's got a wife and two daughters at home waiting for him to come back.
"What if I refuse?"
"Then he dies anyway. Just takes longer. And you fail the first trial."
"What if he don't know nothing?"
"He knows. We made sure of that before we brought him here."
Maria steps forward holding a briefcase. Opens it to reveal instruments I recognize from interrogation training. Things designed to cause maximum pain without causing death. At least not quickly.
"Course there's another option," Vincent says casual. "You could give us the names yourself. Save your friend the suffering. Show us you value loyalty over secrets."
"And betray everyone who's ever trusted me."
"Or save everyone who trusts you now."
The trap's perfect. Elegant. Designed to make me choose between two types of loyalty. Personal vs organizational. Present vs future. The people I can see suffering vs the people who'll suffer later if I talk.
Carlos tries to speak through his busted lips. "Don't... don't give them nothing."
"Quiet," Rosa snaps. "This is between us and your boss."
"He is my boss. And my boss don't break."
"Everyone breaks eventually. Question is how much it takes."
I walk closer to Carlos. Close enough to see the pain in his eyes. The fear he's trying to hide. The absolute certainty that he's gonna die in this chair.
"Carlos. Listen to me."
"I'm listening."
"I'm gonna get you out of here."
"No you ain't. And that's okay. Some things are worth dying for."
"You got kids at home."
"Kids who'll be proud their daddy didn't break when it mattered."
"Kids who need their daddy alive more than they need him heroic."
"Maybe. But that ain't the choice anymore."
He's right. The choice got made when I invoked Trial by Fire. When I decided proving myself was worth risking everyone I care about.
"The clock is ticking," Vincent says. "Choose. Betray your hidden allies or watch your visible ally suffer."
I study the faces around the table. Old predators who've survived decades by being smarter than their enemies. They think they got me trapped. Think they understand how loyalty works.
But they made one mistake.
They assumed I play by their rules.
"I choose option three," I say.
"There is no option three."
"Sure there is. The option where I don't choose between my people at all."
"That's not how trials work."
"That's not how your trials work. But I ain't playing your game anymore."
I pull out my phone and hit a speed dial number. Speaker comes on so everyone can hear.
"Yeah boss?" Tommy's voice crackles through the connection.
"You in position?"
"Been here for an hour. Got eyes on all the exits."
"How many targets?"
"Fifteen at the main table. Maybe twenty security scattered around the building."
Vincent's face goes white. "What is this?"
"This is me showing you what loyalty really means. Tommy, you got that video running?"
"Recording everything. Already uploaded to three different servers."
"Good. Now here's how this works." I look around the table at faces that ain't smug anymore. "Carlos walks out of here alive and unharmed. In return I don't upload footage of you old bastards torturing an innocent man to every news outlet in the state."
"You're bluffing."
"Am I? Tommy, light up the building."
Red laser dots appear on foreheads around the room. Sniper scopes from positions they can't see. Can't reach. Can't threaten.
"Jesus Christ," Anthony mutters.
"You came prepared for a trial," I continue. "I came prepared for war. Difference is I know which one this really is."
"This violates the rules."
"Your rules. Not mine. My rules say you don't threaten my people without consequences."
"The trial—"
"The trial is bullshit designed to make me choose between people I care about. Well guess what? I choose all of them. Carlos. Tommy. Every person who's ever trusted me with their life."
Maria lights another cigarette with hands that definitely shake now. "What do you want?"
"I want Carlos untied. I want him walking out of here healthy. I want the first trial scored as a pass because I showed you exactly how loyal I am."
"That's not how loyalty works."
"Isn't it? Loyalty means protecting your people. All of your people. Not sacrificing some to save others."
"Loyalty means following orders. Accepting authority. Knowing your place."
"My place is wherever I decide to stand. And right now I'm standing between you and anyone who thinks they can hurt people under my protection."
Vincent signals to his security. They reach for weapons. Red dots multiply. Suddenly everyone in the room has laser sights dancing on their chests.
"I wouldn't," I advise. "My people got itchy trigger fingers. Especially when they think their friends are in danger."
"You're insane."
"I'm Romano. There's a difference but I understand the confusion."
Rosa starts untying Carlos herself. Smart woman. "This doesn't end here."
"Course it don't. We got two more trials to go. But now you know what you're dealing with."
"What's that?"
"Someone who don't play by rules designed to make her lose. Someone who brings bigger guns to knife fights. Someone who's tired of pretending loyalty is about submission instead of protection."
Carlos stands up shaky but whole. I put my arm around him and help him toward the door.
"First trial," I call back. "Passed. Loyalty proven. Same time tomorrow for round two."
"This is not how trials work," Vincent shouts.
"This is how my trials work. Better get used to it."
We walk out into the night air that tastes like freedom and victory and the knowledge that everything just changed. Behind us I can hear angry voices arguing about rules and precedents and how to handle someone who refuses to be handled.
"Boss," Carlos says when we're safely in the car. "What you just did back there..."
"Was stupid. Reckless. Probably gonna get us all killed."
"Was amazing. First time I seen those old buzzards scared in twenty years."
"They should be scared. I'm done pretending this is about their approval. Done acting like I need permission to protect my people."
"What about the other trials?"
"We'll handle them the same way. By refusing to accept that winning means sacrificing what matters."
"And if they try to kill you for breaking their rules?"
"Then they find out what happens when you threaten a Romano who's stopped pretending to be reasonable."
My phone buzzes with messages. Dante asking if I'm alive. Tommy confirming all units are in position. Three different news outlets asking about rumors of mob violence at the docks.
The old game is over. The one where powerful men make rules designed to keep women like me in line. Where loyalty means obedience and strength means accepting whatever they decide to dish out.
The new game starts now. Where I make the rules. Where loyalty means protection and strength means refusing to bow to people who mistake age for wisdom.
Two more trials to go. Two more chances for them to learn that Eve Romano don't break under pressure.
She breaks other people under pressure.
And tomorrow night they get to find out what that looks like.
