Chapter 80: Fracture point

Chapter 80 Fracturepoint

The explosion of motion was instantaneous. Shadows burst from the walls like a living tide, a writhing storm of claws and jagged crystal. The ground buckled beneath them, splitting into narrow fault lines that radiated from the floating shard at the chamber’s center. Each pulse of the Shatterveil sent a deep, guttural vibration through the stone, threatening to shatter both the cavern and the resolve of those within it.

Anya staggered, catching herself against a jut of rock as her Ember threads snapped taut around her wrist. They flared brilliantly, responding not just to her will, but to the Rift’s surge of hunger. She felt it pressing at the edges of her mind—cold, invasive, patient.

It wants to drown me in its rhythm, she realized, biting back a gasp. If it takes me, it takes them all.

“Anya!” Kael’s voice cut through the cacophony. He lunged toward her, narrowly avoiding a crystalline spike that shot up from the ground like a spear. His claws raked across it, shattering it into glittering shards. “Stay with me!”

“I’m here,” she ground out, forcing her breathing into sync with the Ember’s pulse instead of the Rift’s. The lattice around them shimmered, expanding outward in a protective arc. Its heat burned her skin, but she welcomed the pain—it meant she was still in control.

Lira darted past them, her dagger flashing like silver lightning. She moved with precision, slicing through the tendrils that lashed at their legs. “The shard’s not just defending itself!” she shouted over the din. “It’s directing them!”

Taren’s eyes tracked the strands of shadow tethering the floating shard to the cavern walls. “Then we cut the strings!” He sprinted toward the nearest tether, his blade glowing faintly as it absorbed Anya’s Ember energy. With a powerful swing, he severed the first strand. It recoiled with a shriek that wasn’t sound but sensation, a vibration that rattled their bones.

The entire chamber responded. The shard pulsed violently, and the floor heaved as if the cavern itself were alive. Fissures opened beneath their feet, and a rush of freezing air poured upward from the depths below. Kael grabbed Anya and pulled her clear just before the ledge collapsed.

“Watch your footing!” he roared, planting himself like a wall between Anya and the chaos. His fur bristled, his silhouette framed by the eerie glow of the crystals. “It’s trying to separate us!”

Anya swallowed hard, forcing herself to focus. “No matter what happens—we stay connected.” She thrust her hand forward, sending Ember threads streaking through the air. The strands linked each of them, forming a glowing web that anchored them to one another even as the ground shifted beneath their boots.

The Rift reacted instantly. Shadow duplicates emerged from the darkness, each one a warped reflection of the pack. They moved with uncanny precision, anticipating attacks before they were even made. One lunged at Lira, mimicking her exact stance and speed. She barely twisted aside in time, slashing its throat only to watch it reform in a haze of black smoke.

“These things are learning us,” Lira hissed, her voice edged with panic. “Every strike, every move—they’re copying it!”

“Then we change the rules,” Kael growled. He feinted left, then spun into a brutal strike from an angle no wolf would normally attempt. The duplicate hesitated, faltered—and was obliterated by a searing blast of Ember threads from Anya.

“Good!” Anya gasped, sweat stinging her eyes. “Keep them guessing!”

Taren severed another shadow tether, but the victory came at a cost. A crystalline limb lashed out from the shard’s base, catching him across the ribs and flinging him against the cavern wall. He hit with a sickening crack and slid down, groaning.

“Taren!” Lira dashed to him, fending off a duplicate with a vicious backhand slice. Blood glistened at his temple, but he gritted his teeth and forced himself upright. “I’m not done yet,” he snarled, staggering back to his feet.

The shard pulsed again, faster now, like a heartbeat reaching a crescendo. The shadows redoubled their assault, swarming toward the Ember lattice. Anya felt her threads fraying under the strain. Pain lanced up her arm as the mark on her wrist burned hotter than ever before.

Kael saw her falter and grabbed her shoulder. “Don’t you dare let go,” he said, voice rough but unwavering. “We end this—together.”

Anya’s vision blurred, but through the haze she saw them—Kael, Lira, Taren—standing ready despite exhaustion and fear. The pack’s heartbeat resonated through her threads, stronger than the Rift’s cold, alien pulse. She clenched her fist and roared, unleashing every ounce of Ember power she possessed.

The lattice exploded outward in a blazing sphere of light. Shadows screamed and disintegrated, tendrils shriveling into ash. The final tether snapped, and the floating shard plummeted toward the ground.

“Move!” Kael tackled Anya out of the way as the shard struck, sending up a shockwave that shattered the floor. Stone rained from above, fissures yawning wider, and for a moment it seemed the entire cavern would collapse.

When the dust settled, the shard lay cracked and dormant—but not destroyed. Faint veins of shadow still pulsed within it, like a dying heart refusing to stop.

Lira wiped grime from her face, panting. “Tell me that was enough.”

Anya rose shakily to her feet, her gaze locked on the shard. “It’s weakened,” she said. “But it’s not finished.”

Kael flexed his claws, determination hardening his expression. “Then neither are we.”

Somewhere deep below, beyond the ruptured floor, the Rift’s true voice stirred. It wasn’t a whisper this time, but a chilling, resonant promise:

Ember burns bright… before it goes out.

Anya’s threads shivered in response. She tightened her grip on them and set her jaw.

“Then we burn hotter,” she said. “Until there’s nothing left to snuff out.”
