Chapter 185: ♥ Chapter 185 ♥

10:45 AM -- Dominic's Mansion -- Private Garden -- Castellano City
Same day
The morning air carried the scent of jasmine and coffee as I sat in our private garden, preparing what would either be the most romantic surprise of our relationship or the most catastrophic mistake I'd ever made. Three years of marriage, and I was about to reveal a secret that could change everything between us.
"You look like you're planning either a celebration or an execution," Dominic's voice came from behind me as he approached through the garden paths, carrying his own coffee and wearing the casual clothes that had become his preference during our legitimate business phase.
"Maybe both," I said, patting the bench beside me. "Sit with me. There's something I need to tell you."
He settled beside me with that careful attention he gave to conversations that began with serious prefaces. Three years of growth had taught him to listen first, react second—a transformation that still amazed me.
"Good secret or potentially problematic secret?" he asked.
"That depends entirely on how you receive it." I turned to face him fully, needing to see his expression when I revealed what I'd been planning for months. "Kim, what would you say if I told you I've been working on something that could give us everything we've never dared to imagine?"
"I'd say you have my complete attention and growing concern about what 'everything' might include."
I reached into my jacket and withdrew the documents I'd been carefully preparing—legal papers, medical records, background checks, and financial arrangements that represented weeks of secret coordination.
"I know we've talked about children before, and I know your feelings about sharing my attention with anyone else." I handed him the first document. "But I also know that some dreams are worth revisiting when circumstances change."
Dominic's face went completely still as he read the adoption application bearing both our names. His silence stretched long enough that I began to question every assumption I'd made about his potential reaction.
"Asher," he said finally, his voice carefully controlled. "What exactly am I looking at?"
"A possibility. Not a decision, not a commitment, just an exploration of whether we're ready to expand our family." I showed him the additional documents. "Background checks we've already passed, financial reviews that demonstrate our stability, character references from Dr. Santos and others who can speak to our relationship evolution."
"You've been planning this for months."
"I've been hoping for this for months. Planning required knowing whether you'd even consider it."
He set down the papers and turned to study my face with the intensity that had once made me feel possessed but now made me feel completely understood.
"Baby, three years ago I told you I couldn't share your attention with children because I needed every piece of your devotion for myself."
"And now?"
"Now I've learned that love multiplies rather than divides, that our partnership is strong enough to include others, that some gifts are too precious to refuse out of fear."
The words sent hope racing through my chest, but I could see him still processing the implications.
"But there are practical considerations," he continued. "Our lifestyle, our business operations, the security concerns that come with our legitimate empire."
"All manageable. Look at the security assessments, the educational plans, the way we could structure our operations to accommodate family responsibilities." I pulled out additional files. "Kim, we've proven we can transform every aspect of our lives when we're committed to growth. This would just be another evolution."
"Another evolution that would make us responsible for protecting someone who can't protect themselves."
"Another evolution that would prove our love is strong enough to nurture new life while maintaining everything we've built together."
He stood and moved to the fountain at the center of our garden, and I watched him work through emotions I could only guess at. When he turned back to me, his expression was unreadable.
"There's something you should know," he said. "Something I've been keeping from you while working through my own feelings about this possibility."
My stomach clenched with sudden concern. "What kind of something?"
"Dr. Santos has been working with me on the family expansion question for the past six months. Helping me understand why I was so resistant to the idea and whether those barriers were still valid."
"You've been in therapy about having children? Without telling me?"
"I've been in therapy about whether I was capable of loving someone else without diminishing what I feel for you." He moved back to sit beside me. "And what I discovered is that my fear wasn't really about sharing your attention—it was about whether I was psychologically healthy enough to be responsible for a child's wellbeing."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. "And what did you conclude?"
"That three years of growth, therapy, and learning to love you in healthy ways has made me capable of things I never thought possible." His hands found mine. "Including being a father who protects without controlling, loves without possessing, guides without dominating."
"Are you saying you want this too?"
"I'm saying I want whatever future you envision for us, as long as we build it together." He picked up the adoption papers again. "But baby, if we do this, everything changes. Our priorities, our security measures, our entire approach to balancing personal and professional responsibilities."
"Everything has already changed. We've already proven we can evolve while maintaining what matters most." I leaned closer to him. "The question is whether we're brave enough to take the next step."
"What kind of timeline are we looking at?"
"The adoption agency has identified a potential match—a newborn whose birth mother specifically requested placement with a stable, loving couple." I showed him the case file. "If we decide to proceed, we could have a son within the month."
"A son."
"A son who would grow up knowing that love can transform people, that partnerships can overcome any challenge, that some families are built through choice rather than biology."
I watched Dominic process this information, seeing the fear and excitement warring in his expression.
"What do you need from me to make this decision?" he asked.
"I need to know that you want this for us, not just for me. That you're excited about the possibility, not just resigned to it."
He was quiet for a long moment, staring at the adoption papers. When he looked up at me, his expression had transformed into something I'd never seen before—wonder mixed with determination.
"I want to meet him," he said simply.
"The baby?"
"Our son."
But as I reached for my phone to call the adoption agency, it buzzed with an urgent message from Marco: Chen surveillance confirmed. New federal task force mobilizing. Recommend immediate security upgrade for all family members.
The timing was either perfectly awful or perfectly motivating—we were about to become parents just as a new threat emerged to challenge everything we'd built.
The question was whether our expanding family would make us stronger or more vulnerable to whatever Chen had planned.
