Chapter 10: Three Heads Better Than Two
Dana stared at Nate with wide eyes as if he had suddenly developed a second head and some twisted, strange octopus limbs that were complete with their suckers.
"You're kidding me!!"
Nate could only nod in acknowledgment as he explained the debacle a few weeks earlier because he had already repeated himself three times. The fact that Dana's best friend turned out to be the lady who they inseminated with sperm from the Lycan Alpha did not make the situation any better.
"And you waited this long to tell me about it?" Dana asked an obviously rhetorical question. Dana demanded an answer angrily.
"At first, I wasn't sure if the insemination would be successful. I seriously thought there was no way a human could get pregnant with Lycans semen, especially because, theoretically, it's impossible!" Nate believes his reasoning is sound, but the statistics on the paper and the specimen she observes through the microscope do not align correctly.
"Well, now that we have this information, we know that hypothetically speaking, you are wrong! It is stated quite clearly in this article that my closest buddy is currently carrying a Lycan pup!" Dana was on the verge of shrieking as she surveyed the data in front of her and consulted her prior knowledge to determine whether or not she had overlooked anything of significance.
"I know. And before you ask, I took the liberty to conduct the examination three times, just in case you choose to have it rechecked. The results came out the same." Nate responded, presumably in response to Dana's query.
Dana gave the impression that she was preparing to kill Nate by the way she was looking at him. "Nate, this is no laughing matter! This is my best friend we were speaking about. I'm the one who provided her the address of your clinic in complete confidence, thinking that it was her greatest chance of becoming pregnant the way she wanted to without any complications, much alone this!"
"Who's going to have a baby?"
When they heard Priscilla ask the question, Nate and Dana were taken aback by it. They were both so focused on what they were discussing that they neither realized someone was knocking on the door nor heard the woman enter the room. They were both so focused on what they were saying to one another that they failed to notice her until after she had spoken.
When Dana glanced at Priscilla, she realized that she appeared to have not even gotten one day older since the last time they had seen one other, which was on the day they graduated from college. She nevertheless looked seductive and endearing, with her purple-lavender printed dress clinging to her in all the right places and defining her contours in a delectably attractive manner. Dana could see clearly the instant Nate recognized that he was still enamored with her like a pup, precisely as he was on the first day he lay eyes on her, even though they had already produced three pups between them.
"Baby..." Nate approached Priscilla cautiously because he knew she could be aware of everything said during their talk. "What are you doing here?" Nate questioned while encircling her in an embrace, and his voice was tense.
"Do you really think I failed to notice that you've been so distracted and agitated these past few days? Even more so today when you just walked out the house like a zombie, forgetting to kiss your wife goodbye on our anniversary, of all days?" She responded to Nate's question with a scowl. She followed it up with another inquiry, saying, "I know how protective you are with your work, so I thought we could get out of the house for a while and talk about it privately. If I wait till then, maybe you'll start talking to me."
Obviously, she is referring to the bond between the mates. Since the beginning of this whole ordeal, Priscilla must have picked up on Nate's anxiety about it all. When a married pair has a robust mate bond, every couple can almost instantly sense what the other is experiencing, regardless of whether they try to conceal or repress it.
Dana signaled with a raised hand that she was aware of her presence. "Prissy... It has been a very long time." Dana greeted.
"Dumbass, if you'd please come here." Priscilla pulled away from her husband to go over to Dana and hug her, "I missed you, smart-ass."
Dana hugged her back. "I missed you too, smart-ass. Could you believe it?" Dana remarked, giggling.
Dana had forgotten that Priscilla, or Prissy, as she refers to her, is one of the most kind-hearted person she has ever known. Even though they are both aware that it has been more than ten years since they last saw each other, and given her history with Nate, it almost seemed like they had never missed a day of seeing each other. Because he is her mate, Nate is unquestionably a very fortunate dog.
"So, what exactly is going on with the two of you?" Priscilla's inquiry was direct, and her tone demanded a plausible explanation. "If this wasn't a big deal, Dana wouldn't act as she is. Nate?" She inquired about it, and due to their mate bond, there was no way for her spouse to either avoid the bullet ricocheted towards him or lie to her about it. When it comes to your partner, such a thing is simply inconceivable.
People often argue that having two heads is preferable to having one. Dana learned unexpectedly later that day that having three heads is really more effective than having two.
It came as something of a surprise when, out of the three of them, Priscilla turned out to be the most level-headed of the three of them after they discussed and rehashed the events of the prior three weeks. She observed the happenings in a dispassionate manner, observing how the incidents flowed and how they fell into place.
In the realm of werewolves and other supernatural beings and magic, nothing ever happens by accident.
Everything unfolds exactly as it should do at the precise moment it should. Therefore either the hands of fate or the Moon Goddess are at work here.
She became even more engrossed in the entire narrative as Nate and Dana described various medical and technical terminology to Priscilla. It is virtually identical to how she is when she discovers new historical books or anything else that comes into her hands from the past, and it is much more similar to how she is when it is anything from the ancient past, especially that werewolf history in the past was not well documented in written form, but their history was passed on through songs and stories often told in front of a bonfire just before bedtime.
Priscilla's professional life was spent in the field of history. She is not just any other historian, though. Her area of expertise is in the study of supernatural entities, and she has a particular interest in shapeshifters, werewolves, and especially Lycans. When she initially learned of Clara's predicament, she had an immediate realization that the expecting mother was in a life-threatening situation.
