Chapter 14: The Confrontation

Cassian's POV

The Charisata Coven's compound sat on the edge of the forest like a fortress. High walls. Iron gates. Protection spells that made the air taste like copper and ash.

They were not expecting us.

Kael's men arrived first. Twelve of his best warriors, all shifted and ready for blood. My own people came from the other direction. Ten vampires who had been with me for centuries. Who would burn the world if I asked them to.

We did not knock. We did not announce ourselves.

Kael kicked the gates open and we walked in like we owned the place.

Witches poured out of the main building within seconds. Twenty. Thirty. More. They formed a line between us and the entrance, their hands already glowing with magic.

But we did not stop walking.

"Where is she?" Kael's voice echoed across the courtyard.

One of the witches stepped forward. She was older, with gray hair pulled back in a severe bun. Her eyes were cold.

"You are trespassing on sacred ground. Leave now or—"

"Or what?" I interrupted. "You will curse us? Kill us? Go ahead and try."

She opened her mouth to respond but another voice cut through the tension.

"That is enough."

Helena emerged from the building. She moved with the kind of confidence that came from centuries of power. Her presence made the air feel heavier.

She stopped a few feet away from us, her expression unreadable.

"You have made a mistake coming here," she said calmly.

"The only mistake was you thinking you could take what belongs to us," Kael growled.

Helena's eyes flicked to him, then to me. "The girl does not belong to anyone. She is a member of this coven. A witch. And I will not hand her over to two abominations who think they can buy people like cattle."

My hands curled into fists. "We paid for her. A substantial amount. She was ours before you decided to interfere."

"She is not a slave to be bought and sold." Helena's voice was sharp now. "She is one of us. Her magic has awakened. Her place is here, with her true family. Not with creatures who only want to possess her."

"We did not come here to negotiate," I said quietly. "We came here to take her back."

"Then you will die trying."

The witches behind her raised their hands. Magic crackled in the air. I could feel my fangs extending. Could hear Kael's low growl beside me.

This was about to get very bloody.

But then the door opened again.

Serena stepped out.

Everything stopped. The magic. The growling. The tension. All of it froze the moment she appeared.

She looked different. Her clothes were clean now. Her hair was pulled back. But it was her eyes that caught me. They were not filled with fear anymore.

They were empty.

"Stop," she said. Her voice was quiet but it carried across the courtyard. "Please. Just stop."

She walked forward slowly, and with each step she took, something in my chest tightened.

When she reached the front of the witch line, she dropped to her knees.

"Please do not fight," she said, looking between me and Kael. "I do not want a war because of me. I do not want people to die because of me."

I moved forward without thinking. My feet carried me toward her before my brain could catch up.

When I was close enough to touch her, I knelt down so we were at eye level.

"Serena," I said softly. "Listen to me."

She would not look at me. Her eyes were fixed on the ground.

"Do you feel it?" I continued. "This pulls between us. This bond. It is not something I chose. It is not something either of us can control. You are my mate. My soul."

Her hands were shaking in her lap.

"I have lived for centuries," I said. "I have seen empires rise and fall. I have watched the world change a thousand times. And in all that time, I have never felt anything like this. Like you."

Finally, she looked up at me. There were tears in her eyes.

"My heart belongs to you," I said. "It always has. Even before we met. Even before you were born in this life. You are my soulmate, Serena. Reincarnated. Returned to me."

A tear slid down her cheek.

"You can stay with your coven," I continued. "I would never stop you from being who you are. From learning about your magic. But please. Just accept the bond. Accept what we are to each other."

For a moment, I thought she might say yes. For one brief, hopeful moment, I thought I saw something in her eyes.

But then she shook her head.

"I cannot," she whispered. "I am sorry, but I cannot."

Those words hit me like a blade to the chest.

"You are a cursed creature," she said, her voice breaking. "You are dead. You drink blood to survive. How can I be fated to someone like that? How can that be real?"

"It is real. You know it is."

"No." She stood up, taking a step back. "If you truly love me like you claim, then you will let me go. You will walk away and never come back."

I stood there, frozen. Every instinct I had was screaming at me to grab her. To make her understand. To force her to feel what I felt.

But I could not move.

Behind me, I heard Kael step forward.

"Enough of this," he said. His voice was rough. Dangerous. "You want to pretend this bond does not exist? Fine. But I am done playing games."

He moved past me before I could stop him. In three long strides, he was in front of Serena.

"I will take you by force if that is what it takes," he said. "I will mark you. And once you have my mark, you will feel the mate bond whether you want to or not. You will understand what you are denying."

"Kael," I said, but he ignored me.

Serena stumbled back but Helena stepped between them.

"Touch her and I will turn you inside out," Helena said coldly.

Kael's eyes flashed gold. "Try it, witch."

"Stop." I grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back. "Just stop."

He spun around to face me. "What are you doing?"

"She needs time," I said. "Can you not see that? Forcing her will only make things worse."

"Time?" He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "How much time, Cassian? Days? Weeks? While she sits here with these witches, who will poison her mind against us?"

"As much time as she needs."

We stared at each other. Two predators. Two alphas. Both wanting the same thing but disagreeing on how to get it.

"You are making a mistake," Kael said.

"Maybe. But it is mine to make."

I turned back to Serena one last time. She was standing behind Helena now, her arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to hold herself together.

"I will give you time," I said. "But know this. The bond between us will not break. It will not fade. And eventually, you will have to make a choice."

She did not respond. She just stood there, silent and distant.

I looked at Helena. "If anything happens to her. If she is harmed in any way. I will burn this entire coven to the ground."

"She will be safe here," Helena said. "Safer than she would ever be with you."

I wanted to argue. Wanted to tell her she was wrong. But what was the point?

I turned and walked toward the gate.

Behind me, I heard Kael curse. Heard his heavy footsteps as he followed.

My men fell in line. So did he. All of us are moving away from the compound. Away from Serena.

The gates closed behind us with a sound like thunder.

When we were far enough away, Kael grabbed my arm and spun me around.

"What the hell was that?" he demanded.

"That was me respecting her choice."

"Her choice? She does not know what she wants! She is confused and scared and those witches are going to fill her head with lies!"

"And dragging her away by force would make her trust us?" I jerked my arm free. "Use your head, Kael. She is terrified. Of us. Of this world. Of everything. If we force her now, we will lose her forever."

"We might lose her anyway."

"Maybe. But at least this way, she gets to decide."

He stared at me for a long moment. Then he turned and walked away without another word.

I stood there in the middle of the road, feeling the bond in my chest pulling tight. Pulling me back toward that compound. Toward her.

But I did not move.

I had given her time. Now I just had to hope it was enough.
