Chapter 198
Episode 198
THIRD PERSON POV
Panic coursed through Lief, but it was brief. He moved fast, and before the door opened, he picked up his phone and closed the laptop with a soft click, then hid. He held his breath and waited, then he saw Stephan. He had noticed him with Varkas a few times when Ryker had told him to monitor Varkas.
Stephan stopped briefly by Varkas’ desk. His gaze swept over the desk and out the window. He then frowned and walked towards where Lief hid. Lief held his breath, and slowly, part shifted his claws. Ready to strike should he be found out. But before Stephan could come any closer, he received a mind-link. He paused, then turned towards the safe and opened it with the combination and placed the box inside it. He then went out of the room in a hurry.
Lief waited for a few seconds, holding his breath. His mind raced as he glanced at his phone. The data had stopped downloading due to the distance. He quickly moved to the desk and opened the laptop. A relieved sigh escaped his lips as he noticed the laptop hadn’t shut down. The data download picked up again, and he rushed over to the safe using the code he saw Stephan punch in. The safe clicked open.
He hurriedly opened it and saw a file and the box. He opened the box and saw rings. He took a picture of his rings. They were wedding bands for a man and a woman.
“Is he getting married?” Lief murmured and hurried to bring out the file, then placed the box back. The file contained pictures. Lief quickly took pictures as he couldn’t make sense of everything. Then he closed the safe and went back to the desk. The data download was complete. He was about to cover his trail when he saw another hidden folder. He looked at the time and cursed under his breath. Another file to decrypt, he thought. But as he opened the folder, there were no passwords. When he opened the first folder, he froze.
They were videos of Lyra, but they were old ones, looking at the date. Videos of her in her room, detailing her private moments. He kept moving. Lyra in the bathroom, Lyra naked in bed.
“What a pervert,” Lief muttered and hurriedly copied the files, covered his trail, and snuck out through the window.
As soon as he got to Ryker’s floor, he ran to his bedroom but didn’t find Ryker in there. So he mind-linked him.
“Come to Dimitri’s chambers. But come through the guest wing adjacent to his room. There is a connecting door through that room,” Ryker spoke through the mind-link and looked at Dimitri.
Ryker had been staring at Lyra’s pictures, lost in thought, when Dimitri asked him over and gave him the same instructions. He followed through and came to Dimitri’s room, where he was taken to a secret chamber.
“I gave what you said some thoughts about Varkas. While I do not fully think Varkas could have anything suspicious going on, it is my daughter we’re talking about here. I had annihilated kingdoms when I thought she had died. How much more when she is alive and was taken under my very nose? I will not look past any observations. And I trust you.” He spoke, walking towards a safe.
Ryker nodded and walked towards Dimitri.
“I have been searching into that aura. It’s chilling, deadly, yet has a sickly feeling to it. Almost rotten.” Dimitri continued as he unlocked his safe and brought out a book. The seal was golden, and it gleamed even in the dark.
“What is this?” Ryker asked, moving closer.
“My family history,” Dimitri replied and met Ryker’s gaze. He looked back at the huge book and wore a white glove, then carefully opened it. “That aura, I didn’t want to believe it then because everyone from the coup back then—they are all dead. But that aura belongs to royal blood.” He continued, then met Ryker’s gaze. “My family line.”
“Wouldn’t that mean that Varkas is royalty? But how could he serve as a beta, and how did he serve beside you undetected?” Ryker’s eyes widened. His heart was pounding as his mind worked fast with Dimitri’s words.
“We don’t know yet if it’s Varkas.” Dimitri closed the book a tremor could be seen coursing through his shoulders. He peeled off the gloves and clenched his hands into a fist as his eyes turned silver.
“But if it is,” He continued. “It would only mean one thing. He had hidden himself so well that even my powers couldn’t detect him. He must have gotten help from a madman. And the only madman I once knew is long dead.”
They walked back to the room just as Lif entered, looking stunned.
“This place is a maze.” He said and approached Ryker. He looked at Dimitri and back to Ryker.
“You found something?” Ryler asked. His eyes lit up expectantly. Lief looked at Dimitri, and Ryker could sense his hesitation.
“You can tell me anything. I’m not that closed off. We’re talking about my daughter here,” Dimitri’s voice rang out. It sounded harsh and cold. His silver eyes still carried that ethereal glow. The feared Lycan King was on the surface.
“Speak,” Ryker turned to Lief and gave him a reassuring nod.
“Fine. But,” Lief looked around. “Are the walls soundproof?” he whispered, and Dimitri’s eyes flickered.
“Follow me.” He said and turned on his heel towards the secret room that he and Ryker had been in.
The three men went in, and Dimtri shut the door, then turned to Lief, who was already bringing out his phone.
“I need a computer.” Lief looked at Dimitri and, without waiting for his permission, went to the computer on Dimitri’s desk and pressed some keys.
“I found a couple of things in Varkas’ computer. Some of which are—” He looked up at Ryker.
“Some of it is what?” Ryker barked. His eyes already turned black at the unspoken words, but he could see it in Lief’s eyes that it was something he wouldn’t take lightly.
Lief swallowed. “They are videos of your mate. Most of them are her private moments.”
“Private moments,” Ryker voiced out coldly and walked over to Lief, who had called up a folder on the screen.
Ryker moved through the folders and looked up at Dimitri a few seconds after he clicked on the first folder. “They look like—” Ryker murmured.
“War plans,” Dimitri finished. His eyes went cold as he stared at the screen.
