Chapter 188: Let’s get married!
Freya
I could see the worry in Victor’s eyes the entire morning. He didn’t say much, but it was there in the way he kept pacing around the room, in the way his jaw clenched every time I so much as shifted in bed.
He wanted me to stay at the hospital for a few more days. I knew it. He hadn’t said it yet, but I could feel it as clearly as if he had screamed it from the roof.
So I sat up slowly, ignoring the slight pull of pain in my side, and looked at him where he stood by the window.
“I want to go home today.” I let out slowly while he turned around instantly, brows furrowed like I’d just told him I was going skydiving.
“Babe, no, you can’t do that.” He immediately countered.
“I’m serious,” I said, keeping my voice calm, steady. “I want to leave. I don’t want to be here anymore.”
“You just came out of a coma two days ago,” he said, moving to the edge of the bed like he thought I might pass out mid-sentence. “Freya, this isn’t something we rush. The doctors…”
“Already cleared me for discharge if I insist,” I said, gently placing my hand over his. “I asked.”
His face twitched. “You asked without telling me?”
“Because I knew you’d react like this.” I replied.
“Because I care. Because I’m not ready to take you home in this state and risk something happening to you again. Baby please, I don’t want anything to happen to you again. I will kill myself.”
“Nothing is going to happen, Victor,” I whispered. “God already saved me once. I’m not going to die. I can feel it. I just… I need to be home. I need my bed, I need fresh air, I need to be somewhere I feel like me again.”
“Everything here just keeps reminding me of what happened to me, and it’s just so hard. It’s almost like I’m living in a loop and it’s too much torture. I’m tired of it all, please baby, let me go home. I want to go home. I need.” I pleaded.
He didn’t say anything for a long time, he just stared at me, eyes rimmed with red like he hadn’t slept properly in days. Which he definitely hasn’t. He’s always by my side, watching me and making sure I get everything I need even before I mention it.
I tightened my hold on his hand.
“I promise to rest,” I said. “I’ll take my meds. We can even run a thousand and one tests if that will make you sure that I’m okay. And we can even arrange for a nurse to come over everyday to check up on me and I promise to comply, I’ll even let you fuss over me as much as you want. But I need to leave, Victor. Please.”
Eventually, he sighed and nodded. “Fine. But I’m asking them to run every test all over again. Top to bottom. Like you said, I want no doubts in my head before I put you in that car.”
I smiled, leaning up to press a soft kiss to his knuckles. “Deal.”
By noon, the doctors had confirmed it all over again… my vitals were stable, my wounds were healing well, and as long as I had proper rest and supervision, I was safe to go home. A nurse would also come daily for dressing changes and any medications that needed monitoring.
Victor signed all the paperwork. I could tell he still wasn’t entirely comfortable with the idea, but I think he also knew arguing with me wouldn’t change my mind.
The driver was already waiting at the entrance when we stepped out. Victor helped me walk slowly, his hand firm around my waist, like he was afraid I might float away if he let go. I didn’t argue. A part of me liked being fussed over like this. It made me feel loved in a way that doused the scare of the incident.
As soon as we got into the car and I leaned back against the seat with a sigh, I saw Victor pull out his phone and dial.
“Anna,” he said when she picked up. “Yeah. I’m not coming into the office until further notice.”
I looked over at him, mouth slightly open in surprise.
“All work should be sent through email,” he continued. “Calls, urgent files, anything. They should all be done either by phone or directly to the house. And you’re in charge till I say otherwise.”
“Victor,” I whispered, nudging his arm, but he held up a finger, finishing the call.
“Thanks, Anna. Don’t forget the Lindrere files to me. I’ll go through it, sign and send them back to you.” He let out and then hung up before finally turning to me.
“You didn’t have to do that,” I said softly. “You have a company to run. It needs you to function, you can’t just leave it to Anna. She can’t do it alone.” I insisted while he just smiled and kissed my hand.
“She won’t be doing it alone. I’ll be working too, just from where my eyes can easily see you. I almost lost you, Freya,” he replied, his voice low but firm. “I’m not making the mistake of being away again.”
“But you didn’t know that would happen,” I argued gently. “You went to work, that’s not a crime. You’re doing everything you can now, and I’m okay…”
He reached out and cupped my face. “I don’t care. I’m choosing you over everything else. Every single time.”
My throat tightened. I blinked, trying to keep the tears from rising again. “You don’t have to prove anything to me, Victor. I already know where your heart is.”
He shook his head. “It’s not about proving anything. It’s about knowing I’m where I’m supposed to be. And that’s with you. Always.”
“And besides, you have a huge company too and you’re not running it right now. Why is mine more important, the company can wait. You can’t, I’d rather close the company rather than lose you again.”
God. I couldn’t even speak after that.
I just slipped my hand into his and held on tightly. We didn’t need to say anything else for the rest of the ride home. His hand in mine said it all.
And for the first time since the incident, despite the pain, despite the loss… I felt safe. I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be.
We remained in that sweet bubble until a thought suddenly crossed my mind, and however crazy it was, it just felt like the right thing.
“Let’s get married next week…” I let out slowly while Victor immediately sat up and stared deep at me.
“What? Baby, you just got out of coma, how are you already thinking about a wedding so soon.” He exclaimed.
“I know right, it’s crazy…”
“Of course, not, it’s not crazy. I’m just surprised, you wanted a very intentional wedding, what changed?” He quizzed.
“I did. That incident changed me, it somehow made me realize that this life is just a fickle. This moment, you have your life and the next, it’s gone. I could have died without ever walking down the aisle with you. The thought haunted me when I thought I was drawing my last breath. Now that I’ve gotten a second chance at life, I’m not wasting anymore time. I want to get married to you. I want to be your wife and yes, it’s still going to be the wedding of my dreams. It will be loud, extravagant and it will be next week.” I let out, stressing each word so he’d know I meant every word.
“Next week then, my beautiful wife. I can’t wait to be your husband!”
