Chapter 467: Working Overtime for Others
As the workday wound down, the design department slowly emptied.
Zoey was one of the last to leave, but when he looked up, he noticed the light in Lauren's office was still on.
Zoey walked over and knocked on the door. "Hey, Lauren, aren't you heading out yet?"
Lauren looked up from the design plans, her expression tired. "It's alright, I'll finish this design plan before I go."
"Okay, but you should get some rest. You look beat."
Before leaving, Zoey glanced at her a couple more times. The more he thought about it, the more familiar the design plan Lauren was working on seemed.
Wasn't it the one he had handed over to Isaiah earlier?
Isaiah was slacking off again, causing Lauren to have to work overtime.
Lauren was genuinely busy, so much so that she didn't even hear Quentin's call, prompting him to come to her office to find her.
"It's so late, why aren't you leaving yet? You didn't even hear me calling. Lauren, you're getting bold."
Lauren was completely focused on drawing the design, and Quentin's sudden voice from behind startled her, causing her pencil to slip.
"You scared me! When did you get behind me? How did you sneak up like that?"
Lauren didn't have time to blame Quentin; she quickly erased the crooked pencil mark. She couldn't let hours of hard work go to waste.
Quentin looked at Lauren innocently. "You can't blame me for this. You were too engrossed to notice me. What are you working on?"
"It's nothing much. I handed A design plan to one of my team members. He's sick and can't finish it, so I'm helping him out."
Lauren continued talking to Quentin while her hand kept moving.
Out of nowhere, Quentin grabbed the pencil from her hand and tossed it on the desk. "What are you doing? No more drawing. Let's go."
"What are you doing?" Lauren tried to pry Quentin's hand off. "I'm almost done. Can you not mess around?"
"This isn't your job. Why should you finish it? I pay them a lot of money, not for them to slack off."
Quentin could be unreasonable at times, and Lauren had no choice but to explain to him.
"It's not like there's another option. You can't force someone to work when they're sick. People will say Robinson Conglomerate's bosses don't care about their employees. Over time, who would want to work here?"
"If they don't want to come, they don't have to. Robinson Conglomerate doesn't lack employees." Quentin's expression turned cold, showing indifference.
But his anger didn't last long. Lauren's kiss instantly extinguished it. "Be good, wait for me for a bit. I'll finish up and then we'll leave, okay?"
Quentin stared at Lauren silently, but eventually, he gave in. "Fine, but hurry up. Don't help others next time."
"Got it," Lauren responded quickly, but Quentin knew she didn't take it to heart.
Because of Isaiah's delayed design draft, they arrived at the villa an hour and a half late.
Peter had been anxiously waiting at the door. "Mr. Quentin Robinson, Mrs. Lauren Robinson, why are you so late today? The food is almost cold."
"Sorry, Peter. I had some work to finish, so it took a bit longer." Lauren felt a bit guilty.
"Mrs. Lauren Robinson, no need to apologize. While work is important, you must also take care of your health. If you keep working late, Mr. Quentin Robinson will be very worried."
Quentin and Lauren's relationship had been getting better recently, and Peter could occasionally joke with them.
"Peter, you're talking nonsense again." Lauren, with her thin skin, couldn't handle teasing.
She blushed and went upstairs, saying she would shower before dinner.
"Mr. Quentin Robinson, I'll have the food reheated so Mrs. Lauren Robinson can eat right after her shower."
Peter always took care of their daily needs thoughtfully.
"Alright," Quentin nodded. "Bring the food upstairs. She probably won't want to come down after her shower."
Lauren was captivated by the aroma of the food as soon as she finished her shower. "It smells so good. I didn't feel it earlier, but now that I'm relaxed, I'm really hungry."
"Come eat. Peter reheated it for us." Quentin placed the utensils in front of Lauren.
Lauren quickly responded and sat down. As soon as she picked up the utensils, she let out a cry.
"What happened?" Quentin immediately put down his utensils, his deep eyes filled with concern.
"It's nothing," Lauren waved her hand. "I probably held the pencil too long today. My fingers are sore. I'll use a spoon instead."
Quentin saw that she didn't seem to be in serious pain and relaxed. He started serving her food while lecturing her.
"Don't take on work that's not yours. If someone doesn't listen to you, let them go. Robinson Conglomerate never lacks talent."
"Yes, Mr. Robinson never lacks people. I'll be careful next time. Let's eat."
Lauren didn't want Quentin to be burdened with unnecessary trouble because of Isaiah.
After all, this issue started with her, and she should resolve it.
The next day, as soon as Isaiah arrived at the company, Zoey, who had been waiting for him, stopped him.
Zoey looked serious. "Tell me, did you make Ms. Walker do the design plan alone yesterday?"
"Yeah, so what? I wasn't feeling well with a cold. She offered to help. I didn't force her."
Isaiah's indifferent attitude infuriated Zoey, raising his voice.
"Isaiah, don't be so excessive! Ms. Walker is kind to us, but you can't take it for granted. Think about it, has Ms. Walker done anything wrong to you this past week? Just because of Maeve, you're acting like this?"
"I have nothing to say to you. If you want to suck up to her, go ahead. I'm not interested."
Isaiah brushed past Zoey, his words dripping with disdain.
Zoey called out to Isaiah several times, but Isaiah didn't look back.
During break time, Zoey finally found a moment when Lauren was free. "Ms. Walker, I apologize on behalf of Isaiah."
Lauren was taken aback but quickly waved it off. "It's nothing. I didn't realize Isaiah was so protective of Maeve."
"So what if he protects Maeve? Maeve might not even care about him. Ms. Walker, don't mind him. He's just not thinking straight. Next time, let me handle such things. Don't work late alone."
Zoey, chosen as Lauren's personal assistant, naturally knew her better than others.
Regarding the rumors in the design department, she just laughed them off. In her eyes, Lauren's skills were far superior to Maeve's.
