Chapter 85: Carter's POV

My phone won't stop ringing. Rolling over in my bed. I scrub a hand over my face when my door bursts open.

"Mom?" I rasp sitting up.

"You have to go. Now Carter." She says panicking.

"Go where?" I ask.

"To the hospital. Somethings happened."

My heart stalls as I stand ripping my phone from the charger and taking my phone and the stairs two at a time. Jumping in the car I peel out and head for the hospital where my heart is currently lying.

She didn't need to say, I could tell from the look on her face.

Gunning it all the way there I barely shut the car off before I'm jumping out. I run across the lobby panting.

"Carter." Amy says somewhere behind me. "Come on. I'll take you up." Nodding I swallow thickly and follow her. The ride up is silent.

She tells me how to get where I'm going but I feel like I'm on auto pilot.

I open the door and see Carson and a team of strangers over her. As if sensing me she turns.

"Come in, wash your hands and put that gown on. You should be here." Nodding I do as she says.

I stand at her head while she barks orders.

"Will they be alright?" I ask. Knowing full well that she still has 12 weeks to go.

"I don't know." She answers honestly. Swallowing I let her get to work.

I'm not sure how long I stand there. It's like time froze and sped up at the same time.

"Blood. I need more blood." Carson barks. That's when I see the puddle under the bed. Clenching my fists tightly I look at the girl that owns my damn heart.

"Don't you dare leave me." I whisper in her ear. Hoping wherever she is off to, she can hear me.

"Here comes baby number one. Get him into the incubator." She states not taking her eyes off her task. "Okay, here she is. Take her to the incubator. Stay with them."

A few doctors and nurses leave with my kids, and I feel torn.

"Come on, where is all this blood coming from?" She says furrowing her brow.

The monitors start going berserk and my chest tightens. Please, God no.

"You've got to be fucking kidding me." A male doctor says under his breath before turning to Carson. Her face falls and she sighs.

"We have no choice. I'm not letting her die today." She states getting to work.

"What's happening?" I croak.

"We have to perform a hysterectomy. Her uterus is destroyed." Carson states working quickly.

"She's coding." I state.

"Carter, I know you're scared. I need you to trust me. Okay?"

Shaking my head, I back away. Leaving the room and my heart behind. Maybe for the last time.

Taking my phone out I dial pressing it to my ear.

"Carter?" Kai asks confused.

"You need to come to the hospital, man. It's bad. It's so fucking bad." My voice cracks.

"Fuck. I'm on my way now. Hang in their man."

Hanging up I slide to the floor bringing my knees to my chest and let the tears fall.

I can hear Carson shouting. Not a good sign.

Eventually I feel a hand on my arm and see Kai.

"I'm here dude. You're not alone." He says sitting beside me.

"I shouldn't have left last night. She was alone." I mutter.

"This isn't your fault."

I know he's right. But seeming the man behind this is already in hell, it does little to calm me down.

"I've never seen so much blood in my life."

"Christ. The babies?" He asks.

"I don't know." I sigh. Nodding he stands up.

"I'll go check." Nodding my thanks, he takes off quickly.

My heart hammers harshly and I wonder if I too will die here today. I think of Evangeline and my heart hurts.

Birth is something to celebrate. Not a day for grieving. I know I will never forgive her if she dies today.

"Carter." Amy says softly standing beside me.

"She's dead. Right?" I ask not looking at her.

"She's stable. She was down for a while, but they got her back. They're nearly done but she's lost a lot of blood."

"What does that mean?"

"Only time will tell if she comes back around. She's a fighter."

"And the twins?"

"They're alright. They'll have to stay in the incubators until they can breathe on their own though."

"I have to make some calls." I say standing on shaky legs. Nodding she lets me by her, and I go outside.

"You should go home. Shower. Eat. Sleep." Kai says behind me.

"I'm fine."

Sighing he sits beside me staring at the twins.

"You going to see her yet?" He asks.

"No." I growl.

Nodding we sit in silence for a while before he leaves to go see her, I'm sure.

I take in the sleeping babies in front of me, my heart swelling. I never thought it would be possible to feel so much love for another person. I was wrong though.

Now, we just have to wait for Cassandra to wake up.
