Chapter 57
Isolde
My heart hammered against my ribs as I followed him through Stone Manor's austere corridors. Unlike the warm, antique charm of Hawke Estate, everything here was sleek, modern, and precisely arranged—much like the Stone family themselves.
I silently rehearsed what I would say to Dorian. Would he be angry? Worried? Had he read my letter explaining why I needed this space? As we approached the conference room, I smoothed down my lab coat and straightened my shoulders, determined to maintain my professional composure.
When the doors opened, my practiced calm nearly cracked.
Dorian stood tall beside the conference table, dressed in a charcoal suit that emphasized his broad shoulders. His amber eyes immediately found mine, a storm of emotions swirling in their depths—relief, concern, frustration, and something deeper that made my breath catch. For a moment, everything else faded away, and I felt the pull between us, that inexplicable connection that had formed despite all logic.
Behind him stood Justin and two other members of his security team, their postures alert but relaxed compared to Dorian's obvious tension.
"Alpha Hawke," Luke greeted formally, extending his hand. "Welcome to Stone territory."
"Alpha Stone." Dorian's voice was controlled, his handshake brief but firm. "Thank you for your hospitality."
His eyes slid back to me, and I felt warmth creep up my neck under his intense gaze.
"Dr. Beck," he acknowledged, his formal tone belied by the slight softening around his eyes. "I'm pleased to see you well.""Mr. Hawke," I responded, matching his formality despite the ridiculous urge to throw myself into his arms. "I trust your journey was smooth?"
The door behind me opened, and I sensed rather than saw Aiden's arrival. The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees as the two men locked eyes.
"Hawke," Aiden said, his usual cool demeanor even more glacial.
"Stone," Dorian replied, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
I glanced between them, sensing decades of history and tension compressed into that single exchange. Justin shifted almost imperceptibly closer to Dorian, while Luke positioned himself strategically between the two men.
"We have matters to discuss," Luke said smoothly. "Dr. Beck has made significant progress identifying the cause of our pack's illness."
Grateful for the redirection, I stepped forward and activated the display screen, bringing up my analysis results. "As I was explaining to Alpha Stone, we've confirmed that the water sources in the northwestern territory have been contaminated with a modified silver compound. It's engineered to dissolve slowly in water, accumulate in tissue over time, and bypass standard detection methods."
Dorian's attention shifted fully to my presentation, his expression sharpening. "This is deliberate targeting, then. Sophisticated chemistry."
"Very sophisticated," Aiden agreed, surprising me with his immediate concurrence. "The compound structure suggests professional knowledge of both chemistry and werewolf physiology."
"Someone who understands our biological weaknesses," Dorian added, studying the molecular model. "How many affected so far?"
"Thirteen confirmed cases," I answered. "Varying levels of severity depending on patrol routes and water consumption patterns."
The three men fell into rapid discussion of security implications, territory vulnerabilities, and potential perpetrators. Despite the tension between them, their combined analytical abilities were impressive—Luke's strategic oversight, Aiden's tactical precision, and Dorian's instinctive grasp of threat assessment created a formidable intelligence-gathering engine.
I watched as they marked maps, discussed patrol patterns, and theorized about hunter movements, momentarily forgetting their animosity in the face of a common threat. Yet beneath their professional cooperation, I could sense the careful distance they maintained, like predators circling warily.
When the meeting adjourned for a brief recess before dinner, Elissa appeared at my side, linking her arm through mine.
"Come on," she whispered, tugging me toward the hallway. "I need to check on Mia, and you could use a break from all that testosterone."
As we walked through the corridor, she leaned close to my ear. "Did you feel it? The energy between them?"
"It was... intense," I admitted. "Is there history I should know about?"
Elissa glanced around to ensure we were alone before speaking. "Ten years ago, during a territory border dispute, your husband and my brother nearly killed each other." Her green eyes were serious for once. "Aiden still has the scars across his chest from Dorian's claws, and I've heard Dorian's shoulder never fully healed from where Aiden's fangs pierced it."
I felt a chill run down my spine, remembering the silvery scar tissue I'd noticed on Dorian's left shoulder when treating his injuries. He'd dismissed it as an old training accident.
"Why?" I whispered. "What happened?"
"Politics, territory, old rivalries between our families," Elissa shrugged. "But some say it was also about a woman—a Levin wolf both had been interested in. The official story is that they fought over misinterpreted border signals, but..." She trailed off suggestively.
Before I could press for more details, a staff member approached to inform us that dinner would be served shortly, and I should return to my guest room to prepare.
---
The formal dining hall of Stone Manor gleamed with modern elegance—crystal chandeliers casting precise light over a long table of polished obsidian. Unlike the boisterous family meals at Hawke Estate, dinner here felt orchestrated, each movement and word calculated.
I sat between Elissa and an elderly Stone pack member, with Dorian directly across from me. Throughout the multiple courses, I could feel his gaze repeatedly returning to me, though he maintained polite conversation with those around him.
When Luke called for attention, I straightened in my chair, preparing for my requested medical update.
"Dr. Beck has begun implementing treatment for our affected pack members," Luke announced. "Perhaps you would share your progress, Doctor?"
