Chapter 164: Marry Her Lover
One week went by very quickly. Riley didn't think she would still be living in the house without Logan or Landon. Since that morning, Riley had not seen Landon again in this house. Some of Logan's men whom she asked about Logan's whereabouts told her that Logan was going abroad for an important job. She had no idea what important work he was involved in. Riley couldn't contact Landon at all. His cell phone was never active. She had left dozens of messages in his voice mailbox, but none of them were answered.
Riley stretched her sore hands in the air. She had just completed a summary of the new case for Ms. Romanoff. After returning from a vacation to Hawaii, Ms. Romanoff had a long list of jobs to do. It also had an impact on her because she had been very busy lately. Her longing for Logan/Landon was distracted because she had many things to do far from home. Usually she only did her work from home or from campus. Now she had to do all her work from New York. It was a bit of a hassle at first, but now she was used to it and she found her rhythm.
If she was at work, Betty would go to handle Archer. The two of them were now very clingy to each other. Betty became a grandmother figure for Archer, who had never had a grandmother. Archer loved helping Betty harvest apples in the garden and make apple pie. Yesterday they ate apple pie until they were full because Betty cooked a lot of apple pie.
Before turning off her laptop and going to check on Archer in his room, Riley checked her email inbox one more time. She wanted to confirm whether Ms. Romanoff had complaints or corrections to her entire work. But it seemed everything was in order. Ms. Romanoff didn't send her anything else. Now she could rest while accompanying Archer to play or take a nap.
Riley would return Logan's laptop to his desk drawer. But suddenly a message came in from Ms. Romanoff. She told her to write down the phone number of a restaurant that would serve as a venue for her husband's birthday. Ms. Romanoff asked her to make a reservation at the restaurant at three o'clock. Riley then searched for pens around Logan's desk because she left her pen in her room. She was going to call the restaurant on the phone in Logan's study because her cell phone was lowbatt right now. Before her cell phone ran out of power, she had to write down the number quickly.
She opened the first drawer, but found nothing but papers with Logan's signature and his company stamp. Then she opened the second drawer, but there was no pen. Then Riley opened the third drawer. She lifted the folders one by one to find a pen. She accidentally opened a blue folder containing some photos that were quite familiar to her.
Riley picked up the folder, opened it on Logan's desk, and she found dozens of photos of her in various poses and sizes. When she was in college, when she was standing in front of her house watching Archer play with cars, then when she was with Justin. All her photos were clearly displayed there. There were even several photos that were exactly the same as the photos posted on the campus notice board.
She frowned in confusion. Why did Logan/Landon do all this? They took photos secretly and then shared them with her friends.
Riley put the photos back into the folder. She had gotten his pen from the bookshelf behind Logan's desk. She decided not to worry about the photos because all the problems were over. Maybe if she had found the photos a few weeks ago, before she made peace with Logan and Landon, she might have been furious at them. But now they have made up. Riley didn't want to ruin the good relationship between them, and now she was anticipating Landon/Logan to come home. She missed that annoying man. Where had Logan/Landon been all this time? Why was there no news from Landon? Now she only calmed down a bit because she hadn't heard any bad news from any of Logan/Landon's men, which proved they were still fine out there.
After tidying all of Logan's things to their original places, Riley went to the phone line to write down the number sent by Mrs. Romanoff. But she suddenly had an idea to call Kaella. It had been a long time since they spoke. She needed to tell Kaella and her father about her condition there.
"Hi, Kaella. It's me. I use the telephone line in Logan's room. How are you?"
"Riley! When are you coming home? Your father is very lonely at home alone. Your father misses Archer."
“I'll be home after Logan returns from his business trip. He told me to stay here while he was doing business out there.”
"You haven't heard from him yet?"
"I haven't heard from him yet," Riley said wearily.
"Maybe he's having fun with one of his girlfriends," Kaella teased her on the other side while stifling a laugh.
"No way! Why are you scaring me?"
"Oh my God, so it's true that you're in love with Logan right now?"
"No questions. I won't deny it anymore. Better admit it. After all, Logan loves me too. We will talk about the continuation of our relationship after Logan returns later."
"Okay. Wish you all the best, My Sweetheart.”
"Thanks Kaella. Is my dad okay at home? Has my dad taken all the medicine?”
“Don't worry, your father is very well at home. He planted a cherry tree in the yard. He really likes gardening. Yesterday I bought him some flower seeds and gardening tools.”
“Tsk, that should be my job. You don't have to buy my father anything."
“I already consider him my own father. After all, your father is much better than my own biological father. Your father treats me like I am his daughter too.”
“My father does not discriminate in his affection for us. Thank you again for looking after my father while I was in New York.”
"You're welcome. Riley, there's something I want to tell you."
"About what?"
Silence crept across there. Suddenly Kaella's cheerful voice disappeared, replaced by the sound of heavy sighs being exhaled repeatedly.
"Yesterday Felix proposed to me."
"Oh, God? Is it real? Congratulations to you, Kaella. I'm really happy for you. If I'm not in New York, I really want to hug you. We'll celebrate together at our favorite steakhouse and order a jumbo diet coke."
Riley really couldn't stop her excitement until she forgot about Kaella's condition, who didn't sound too happy on the other side.
“Kaella? Are you still there?”
"Yeah, I'm still here. Thank you very much, Riley. I wish you were here to celebrate with me.”
Riley frowned. "What's with your voice? Why don't you sound happy?"
“I… I'm happy, of course. I love Felix, and vice versa. But Felix wants us to get married next month. After that, Felix will take me to Atlanta to live there with his family. We... We'll be far apart, Riley.”
Kaella finally couldn't stop herself from crying as she spoke of the breakup. She had been holding back too long from telling Riley about the possibility that she would move to Atlanta if Felix married her. And after yesterday, Felix proposed to her, Felix made it even clearer that he would take her to Atlanta to live with the rest of his family.
“Hey, why do you have to be sad? We won't really be apart. We will still be sisters. Atlanta is not far away. I can visit you there on vacation or vice versa. Don't cry, okay? You deserve to be happy with the man you love."
“But we've always been together since leaving Logan’s mansion. I feel really sad and miss your figure.”
"You're too melancholic, Kaella," Riley laughed softly.
"In the end, we will still be separated if my relationship with Logan continues. Yeah, I still don't know what our relationship will turn out to be.”
"But you seem optimistic. Judging from how you are now, Logan will definitely maintain your relationship.”
"Can't be too optimistic. But hopefully it will end well like yours. Once again, congratulations to you, Kaella.”
"Thank you. Take good care of yourself there. I have to get back to work.”
After talking to Kaella and hanging up the phone, Riley suddenly felt tears roll down her cheeks. Suddenly she felt sad to hear that Kaella had found the right man who would marry her.
Riley sat back in Logan's chair, trying to normalize her emotions that suddenly messed her up this afternoon. Her fingers intertwined on her lap. She knew that she was crying out of jealousy. Kaella even only needed a short time to be able to marry her lover. Why couldn't she be like Kaella? Why did she always encounter annoying obstacles and end up sad? There was no clear future for her.
