Chapter 26

I smiled again, as James made another joke, he was good at those. It was like he joked all the time Unless he needed to be serious. It was a nice change from the seriousness of the road in the danger that always lived behind us. I liked James, and over the past two days we have been here I've got to know Calen a bit better. He wasn't bloodthirsty at all, I didn't even think he like to fight. But like all of us he had to. He liked other things, instead more simpler things he liked reading and music. He even played the violin and the piano. It was impressive to say the least. He promised to teach me at least one of them. I mean if you were to be married, we would be spending a lot of time together.

He has assured me that once I met his mother, everything will be put into place, she had already approved of me just from a picture, so I guess it was true when they say I wasn't bad looking, even though I was only 17. I was wondering whether to be like to be married, settle down and have children. But I wouldn't be for a long while yet. First there was a war to win. The world I have been told been going on for many centuries. So I guess it wasn't going to end any time soon.

I turned my attention back to the dinner table with James was telling his friend, what do you call it? Beta Wolf? Anyway, he was telling Tony how nice it will be to find his mate and settle down. That it was so hard to find them these days with all the humans around. And I had to laugh at that. They did in class me as an average human because of my bloodline. but I guess they were right when they say I was an average.

They all kept telling me how special I was, But it was hard To believe when you spent your whole life running.

I was sick of running.

I guess I was finally getting in the mood to fight, even if it was for everyone's freedom, and not just my own. Strange, I never thought I'd align myself with the enemy. Yet here, I was promised to one.

"James, leave the poor man alone, I'm sure he's sick of hearing your voice by now."I laughed.

James bellowed with laughter, His laugh shaking the whole table. " you know, if a young lady you know how to run your mouth."

"well that's your fault, James, I never said I was a lady. You just assumed that I was" I shook my head, laughing.

He smiled brightly, "do you know what? I can't say you are wrong."

"no one can these days." I laugh, back. "do you know where Calen is?"

James smile suddenly vanished, as though he remembered something important, but couldn't tell me. "I can't say that I do, missing your husband already?"

"not exactly, I just wondered where he was because he's never late for dinner." I watch James carefully as I speak, searching for any sign of deception, but I see none. "are you sure he's around here?"

"I'm sure he's around here somewhere, don't worry your little head." James smile returned as he talked, and somehow, I trusted that he was telling the truth.

I hear a loud banging sound somewhere near the end of the complex, we were in a large dining hall that half of the whole pack wwas is eating in. I didn't think much of it until people started jumping to their feet and shifting into their wolves, Screams and cries, and howls echoing. I didn't know what to do. I didn't even know where the fighting was coming from.

I looked back to see that James has gone, probably run off to fight with his people as the Alpha is supposed to. But I was so scared that I couldn't even move an inch. Was it Theon's vampires that are coming to take me back. I really hope that wasn't, but all of my instincts, told me that it was. I I didn't want any of these people to get hurt, but I knew it was inevitable if the vampires were attacking. If only I could do something to help. I want to nothing more than to help destroy the creatures that tried to destroy me. But I was never any good at fighting, and I didn't know the first thing about controlling my powers, so I did the only thing that I could. I hide under the table.

Yes, it was the most cowardly thing to do, but what choice do I have?

I couldn't shift like the werewolves, I wasn't fast or strong like the vampires, I wouldn't even be able to protect myself against the others. Even if I wanted to.

I saw blood and fighting and claws and teeth, I saw everything that a 17-year-old shouldn't, people, falling, people screaming, people crying. It was all too much.

I cover my ears and hold my head in my knees, I didn't want to hear or see any of it, I just wanted to go home, I wanted my sister and I wanted my old life back. I didn't want to be a part of any of this. But I also knew that that couldn't happen either. The past is the past and we can only move forward even if moving forward is scary. More scary than anything we have done before.

When was screaming stopped I decided to look up, I want to see the carnage that was left behind.

Calen Rushed in and skidded towards me, He knelt beside me, and checked me all over for wounds. "they didn't hurt you did they?" he says frantically.

I shake my head, my ears ringing and my head hurting, I wanted to run and sleep. I didn't want to deal with any of this.

"come on, let's take you to bed."

"what about the attack?" I asked timidly.

"it's all over now, don't worry, you are safe, just as I promised." he says with conviction, Picking me up into his arms and currently out of the hall, yet, all I could see as we left was blood and death.

I had caused this.

No matter what anyone says, this was all my fault.
