Chapter 75: Ground Beneath
Aria walked across the field where the battle had burned itself out. The earth was dark and soft under her feet. Smoke still rose in thin lines. The whole place felt quiet in a strange way. Not peaceful. Just emptied out.
She knelt and touched the ground. Warmth slid into her palm. A soft beat moved under the soil like something breathing far below. She pulled her hand back fast. The beat followed the movement, like it wanted more contact.
The air felt strange around her. Heavy. Thick. She looked up at the trees at the edge of the field. Their leaves did not move. No wind touched them. Everything held still, as if waiting for her to do something. Her heart knocked once, hard.
A faint voice slipped into her mind. Not a word. Just a sound. Selene. Aria felt her chest tighten. The whisper curled around her thoughts. It pushed her to look again at the ground. It pushed her to listen.
She lowered her hand slowly until her fingers brushed the dirt again. The beat came stronger this time. Slow. Deep. Like a heart buried under the earth. The warmth crawled up her arm. Her breath caught.
Something shifted under the soil. Just a small movement. Enough to make the dirt tremble. Aria froze. She waited. The movement stopped, but the heat stayed. Selene whispered again. A soft pull. A warning. Or a call. Aria could not tell.
She rose to her feet and stepped back. Her pulse felt uneven. Not scared. Just alert. Like her body knew something she did not understand yet.
She turned and saw Lucian watching her from a distance. His arms were crossed. His face unreadable. He started walking toward her. Each step slow. Measured. His eyes never left her hands.
Aria wiped her palms on her clothes even though nothing was on them. She did not know what she had touched. She did not know what had touched her back.
She only knew the ground was no longer quiet. And something down there had felt her.
Lucian stopped a few steps away from her. He looked at the field behind her, then down at her hands again. She felt heat rise in her cheeks. She had no reason to feel guilty, but her body acted like she had been caught doing something wrong.
He picked up a bit of dirt with his fingers and rubbed it slowly. He looked at it for a long moment. Then he let it fall. His jaw tightened.
“You felt something” he said quietly.
Aria did not answer at first. She looked back at the ground. The warmth still clung to her skin even now. She gave a small nod.
Lucian let out a breath. Not angry. Not soft. Just tired. He stepped closer and looked at the field where the soil had cracked in thin uneven lines.
“They move under old lands” he said. “Shadowborn. Some of them sink into the ground after death. Some do not die at all. They wait.”
Aria’s stomach turned. The idea of something alive under her feet made her skin crawl. But the beat she had felt was not hateful. It was too steady. Too calm. Almost familiar.
“It was not like them” she said.
Lucian studied her face. His eyes narrowed a little, as if he was trying to read a thought she was not sharing.
“What was it then” he asked.
Aria opened her mouth but no real answer formed. She remembered the warmth. The pull. The strange quiet around her when it happened. She remembered Selene’s soft whisper brushing against her mind.
“I do not know” she said. “But it felt like it knew me.”
Lucian frowned. His hand brushed her arm gently. A small touch. A grounding one.
“If something knows you” he said. “I need to know it too.”
She looked up at him. The air between them felt tight again, but not in a painful way. His eyes held worry. A kind she had not seen since the night they first met.
Before she could speak, the ground behind her gave a soft thud. Not loud. Just enough for both of them to turn at the same time.
Nothing moved on the surface.
But Aria felt the beat again. Deep under the soil. Slow. Even. Waiting.
Lucian stepped in front of her. His hand reached back and closed around her wrist.
“Do not stand close to it again” he said.
Aria nodded, but her eyes stayed fixed on the earth. That soft beat kept pulsing. Each one quiet but strong.
Like a call she was not supposed to hear.
But could not ignore.
Aria pulled her gaze from the soil, but the feeling stayed with her. It sat in her chest like a soft knock. Not loud. Just steady. Lucian kept his hand around her wrist as if he thought the ground might open and swallow her.
They walked back slowly. The field behind them grew quiet again. Even the wind felt still. Lucian kept looking over his shoulder, then at her face, as if he was searching for a sign she was hiding something.
“You look pale” he said.
“I am fine.”
“You are not.”
Aria let out a small breath. She did not know how to explain that nothing hurt. She felt strange, but not sick. The heat in her hands had faded, yet the memory of it stayed warm inside her.
When they reached the edge of the courtyard, a few soldiers bowed their heads to them. They still looked shaken from the last attack. Aria gave a small nod back. Her steps felt heavier, like her thoughts were weighing her down.
Lucian stopped walking. She turned to him. His eyes searched hers.
“If anything changes” he said. “Tell me.”
She wanted to promise him. She almost did. But she remembered the way Selene’s voice brushed her mind. Like a soft hand closing around a secret. She swallowed.
“I will try.”
He did not like that answer. His jaw tightened again. But he said nothing. His fingers left her wrist, slow and reluctant.
Aria looked back toward the field. The soil lay still. No glow. No crack. No movement. But she knew the beat was still there. Deep and patient. Calling her like it had all the time in the world.
She wrapped her arms around herself as she walked away. The quiet followed her. It felt like something waiting just a few steps behind her shadow.
Watching.
Learning her shape.
Learning her fire.
