Chapter 15: Chapter Fifteen

Natasha watched Renn’s blip on her screen. One nanosec it was beating like a heart and the next it froze into a straight line. She fired off five messages in a row, not receiving an answer for any of them.

That little snot faced baby. Why wasn’t he answering?

First, he intercepts her retrieval of the subject, and now this. He’s lucky the poor girl didn’t die. Or perhaps maybe that would have been better. Then she could have had him arrested for violating the laws of Time Travel. And avoided this mess all together.

Natasha pressed the holsom on her desk. Her assistant’s face rose up before her.

“Yes, ma’am,” Lexi said.

“Check the connection on Renn Porter’s locator.”

Natasha watched Lexi as she followed her orders. At least someone always did what she asked.

“It’s in a static position,” Lexi said. “That means it’s in one place.”

“I know what that means,” Natasha barked.

Lexi’s face tightened, the line across her forehead deepening. “Of course, you do,” Lexi’s voice quivered. “I’ll search for him.”

“Let me know what you find.” Natasha softened her voice. Despite her meekness, Lexi was the best assistant. Losing her would not be good.

Natasha turned back to her screen. Still no movement.

Law # 2- Never remove your locator.

Even the most naïve apprentice knew that. The locator functioned by reading the matchmaker’s pulse.

How in the dickens would she ever find him? And then it dawned on her. How would he even find himself? His goose was cooked, as they used to say. How she loved those old-fashioned sayings. They expressed how one felt so much better than adjectives attached to cold, non-thinking computers. Or those stupid acronyms or images so popular in the modern world.

Well, she may not know where Renn had traveled, but she knew exactly where to find Jessica.

“Lexi, terminate Renn’s locator. And prepare my meds,” Natasha spoke into the holocom. “I’m leaving again to find Renn.”
