Chapter 52: Wrong Sister in The Woods
Susan P.O.V.
After every fell into their own little dream worlds, I yanked on my sister and started running into the forest, dragging her behind me. She was starting to become as useful as a dull knife.
"Susan wait!" I knew that voice behind me. Wretched woman.
I whipped my head around, my eyes connecting with Lainey's. She was running after us. I was shocked she chose us over helping those brats.
"What do you want Lainey? You're not apart of this little escape plan." My voice was cold, my irritation probably evident.
"I want to help you. You promised you wouldn't leave me here. You said you would take me with you. Please." Her eyes were glossy; any minute tears would start streaming down her face.
I remember telling her that I would save her from this world if anything ever happened. She never knew about my sister, but she knew about my past and how this bimbo on my arm had taken everything from me. Now she's the bimbo that will get us killed.
"I don't think that's a good idea anymore. The chances of us dying are higher with extra baggage. Run in another direction, I'm sure we can send a shadow or two to keep you safe until you can make it out." I kept my voice flat, any hint of emotion and she'll drag this on until she gets her way.
"Please Susan. I can help you! If they do find us, I'll sacrifice myself for you! I've sacrificed so much for you already! Return the favor, just this once."
Any more begging and she might actually get on her knees, stupid woman. Her words are tempting; if she did sacrifice herself, that's one less problem I'd have to deal with. I wish I knew what sacrifices she is talking about; most of the time, it was me putting my job and life on the line for her.
"Fine. But the moment we are far enough away, you move on. And don't say another word while we're walking. Bad enough having to hear you beg in that whiny voice of yours."
She nodded her head violently. I turned around, my sister's wrist in my hand, and started walking quickly. I don't know where we're going, but we need time to come up with a game plan to take out those kids.
We walked for what felt like forever. The forest was as silent as it usually is, which either meant those kids hadn't started moving yet or they were coming up with their own plan and moving silently.
Eventually we made it to a small clearing in the forest. A couple of fallen trees made for the perfect bench. I sat down and yanked my sister down next to me. Lainey sat on another log across from us.
"How is it that you were able to lure in so many people into the forest but you couldn't kill those kids while they were practically unconscious?" I asked my sister.
She just stared back at me. I knew she could partially understand me, though she couldn't speak, which was probably for the best. Our arguments as children were loud and painfully long.
"You could always just make one of those giant holes those corpses came out of. Let the forest swallow them, less work." Lainey stared at the ground as she spoke.
"It doesn't work like that. Didn't I tell you to shut up while you're with us?" I should shove her into a damn hole.
Another few minutes went by with no more words exchanged between us. If my sister wasn't so damn useless, we would be out of this situation and I could go home. And maybe even take over Lainey's job like I've really always wanted.
Being the secretary was great, but I wanted more. I've always wanted more. Things I could never have, the things that I've wanted always beyond my reach. Maybe the wrong sister is in these woods. Who knew this one would be so useless? But maybe I am of the same usefulness.
"So what's our plan?" Lainey spoke out of turn, again.
I sucked my teeth and glared at her.
"Do you or do you not understand the words coming out of my mouth. Shut the hell up."
"Are you even thinking of a plan right now? Maybe we should keep walking, the longer we sit here, the better chance they have at finding us." Lainey kept speaking. This damn woman will be the death of me.
"No Lainey. I'm sitting here thinking of nothing, hoping and praying those kids will fucking find us and take you out and then we can run. Without you."
Her eyes widened, a look of hurt plastered across her face.
"Why can't you summon more holes or more people to kill them? Why can't she do that scream and just take them out?"
"She doesn't work like that. Sure, she can scream, but it only drops them to their knees, giving her time to take their soul. We have to be close to them to summon the holes, and it only works for a few of them. The shadows, however..."
Bingo. The shadows could deter them for long enough, and we could make it out and trap them in here forever. If my dear sister makes it out, the veil on the woods stays forever, binding every soul.
"Sweet sister, the time to be useless is not now. Let's let the shadows out to play some more, pull the kids to the middle of the forest while we make our way outside. How does that sound?" I smoothed my sister's frayed hair down, speaking to her softly.
As if she understood, she stood abruptly, the ground trembling beneath our feet as hundreds of shadows surrounded us. Each one giving a dutiful nod, then running deep into the forest. A beautiful sight indeed.
Lainey cowered on the ground as the shadows rose behind her. I walked over and grabbed her arm, forcing her to her feet.
"Get moving. We don't have all day."
With both Lainey and my sister in hand, we trekked towards the outskirts. Hopefully this plan would work.
