Chapter 109: Reconciliation with Rebecca
"Whether I dare or not, it all depends on whether you're lying or not today," Nicole stood up, "We're both women, so there's no need to trouble each other. Since you've loved Darian before, I'm sure you don't want his reputation tarnished like this. I'm not asking you to help clear his name; just hoping you won't spread rumors anymore."
Rebecca looked at her seriously and asked, "You seem so eager to find out the culprit so you could clear Darian's name. Is it because you love him deeply?"
Nicole definitely wouldn't tell her it's just for herself. "I don't need to answer that question."
"No matter what you do, a person like Darian can never truly let you into his heart," Rebecca breathed deeply, a mix of persistence but also the need to let go in her heart.
"I truly love him, mistakenly thinking he loved me too. After he got into trouble, I thought I wouldn't despise him, but the truth is, I had nightmares those nights."
"I didn't want to face such a person for the rest of my life, so I ran away. After getting married, it wasn't until he married you that I realized I still couldn't let him go. I don't want any other women around him, and I can't let others have what I don't want."
Rebecca tightened her grip, finally expressing her inner thoughts. "In fact, he never loved me. Even if I didn't get married and he wasn't disfigured, it'd still be impossible between us."
Hearing this, Nicole was somewhat surprised. She thought Rebecca was truly Darian's dream lover, but it seemed that wasn't the case.
"Have you figured it out?"
Rebecca shrugged, "If I don't figure it out, what can I do? He's disfigured and has no interest in me; can I still hold on to him?"
She chuckled, her face reluctant and helpless. "I'm a realist. He doesn't have what I want, so I won't waste any more time on him."
Nicole could sense that she had truly given up. "If not you, then who?" she asked the most crucial question.
Rebecca shrugged, "I don't know either."
Unable to ask anything else, Nicole prepared to leave. However, Rebecca stopped her. "Nicole, will you fall in love with him?"
Nicole's pupils contracted slightly. She had an answer in her heart, but she couldn't tell Rebecca. Rebecca also didn't seem too eager to know as she walked up to her and said, "We don't have any deep-seated hatred between us. If we meet again in the future, let's not be hostile."
"It's you who always had a problem with me," Nicole understood Rebecca's slightly kind gesture, "Rest assured; I have ethics. At least, I won't leak what you're worried about."
Rebecca sighed in relief internally. "You are indeed very kind."
"I just don't bother making enemies," Nicole added, "Of course, that doesn't mean I'll let anyone bully me."
Rebecca chuckled, "You and Darian really aren't on the same page. But I'm curious to see what will happen between you two."
"It doesn't matter what the outcome is. What's important is, don't you find this situation strange?" Nicole always felt something was off, and now she finally understood.
"What's strange?"
"The rumor that Darian is impotent and indifferent even when women are sent to his bed," Nicole said. She then saw Rebecca's expression slightly change as she realized something was amiss.
Rebecca was slightly nervous, her gaze on Nicole. "That day, only you saw that scene."
"Do you suspect me?"
"If it was you, you could use it to pressure Darian to let you off."
"You're wrong," Nicole didn't blame her for thinking that way. "You don't understand Darian. If such rumors arise, he won't let me off; he will just do everything to make me prove it's false. I'd only do that if I didn't want to live."
Rebecca furrowed her brow, "Then who could it be?"
"It depends on whether there was a third person besides us that day," Nicole observed Rebecca's expression. She then squinted slightly, clearly thinking of something.
Rebecca said nothing, her face very serious. "I should go."
"You know who it is, right?" Nicole confronted, "I don't know why you're being quiet, but whoever dares to spread such rumors must have something on you. You're a married woman; no matter how your marriage is, your husband wouldn't just sit by if he hears about this. After all, it concerns a man's dignity."
Rebecca clenched her fist slightly. "This is my business."
Nicole understood her words; she didn't want to share information with her.
"Fine. Even if this matter is exposed, the worst that could happen wouldn't be to my reputation. Similarly, Darian is a man. Even if the rumors spread, he can just bear being joked about his incompetence. However, you're different. You'd be the woman who climbed naked into his bed. In this world, many things are ultimately unfriendly to women."
Nicole wouldn't force her. After all, smart people knew which rumors would ultimately have the greatest impact.
Rebecca swallowed hard with slight anger. "If he dares to stab me in the back, I won't let him off!"
Indeed, she knew who it was. After Rebecca left, Nicole not only knew there was someone else behind the rumors, but also that Rebecca had come to terms with that person.
To be precise, Rebecca had reached a consensus with them.
She clearly knew the dream she had woven had shattered, and it was time to wake up.
But who exactly spread these rumors?
In the afternoon, Nicole delivered two babies, one through natural birth and the other through a cesarean section.
As she held the babies, she felt a softness envelop her.
The families of the new mothers distributed gifts, all smiling with joy.
Every child was a gift from God; an angel, a little spirit, a continuation of life.
All worries and fatigue vanished when people saw children come into the world.
Nicole relaxed against the wall. The adjacent operating room's door opened as Olivia walked out. She gave Nicole a glance before heading to the sink.
After the incident with Lanny, their relationship had become strained.
Nicole didn't try to befriend everyone, as there would always be conflicts in the workplace.
After a quick rest, she left.
"Dr. Creed, someone is looking for you," a nurse pointed to her office.
Nicole returned to her office and saw Mike.
"Why are you here?" she asked him, "Is your health better?"
"Much better," he looked at her gently. "Do you have time tonight? Let me take you out for dinner."
She hesitated. The rumors were still unresolved, and Darian's eyes were on her again.
"I have to go home," she politely declined.
She didn't dare look at him, as the visible sadness in his eyes might make her soften up and agree.
"Nicole, tell me. Are you afraid of him, or do you like him?" he urgently wanted to know what she truly felt.
