Chapter 38: Bonds of Betrothal

Elara's POV

Morning light streaked across the sky as we approached the village. My feet, wrapped in Selena's torn cloak strips, ached with each step. The forest thinned, revealing crude wooden structures clustered together like huddling animals.

"Remember," Selena whispered, "you're Elara from Pine Hollow now. Nothing more."

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. After days of fleeing, hiding from Alpha search parties, and nearly falling into traps, we'd finally reached our destination. But instead of relief, I felt only dread settling in my stomach like a cold stone.

Villagers emerged from their homes, suspicious eyes tracking our progress. Their whispers followed us like shadows.

"Outsiders."

"Strangers."

"What business brings them here?"

Selena walked with her head high, one hand gently guiding me forward. Her confidence was a shield I gratefully hid behind.

"The Hunt cabin is at the edge of the village," she said, nodding toward a modest structure set apart from the others. Various talismans hung alongside animal skins outside—not just hunting trophies, I realized, but protections against supernatural threats.

A broad-shouldered man with a salt-and-pepper beard stood at the doorway, arms crossed. His weathered face reminded me of cracked leather, his eyes sharp as he assessed us.

"You must be Selena," he said, his gaze calculating. "Connor mentioned you'd be arriving."

"Mr. Hunt," Selena nodded respectfully. "Your son received my message, then?"

"He did. I'm Garrett Hunt." His gaze shifted to me, examining me with the practiced eye of someone accustomed to identifying threats. "And this is the girl?"

Connor appeared behind his father, tall and solid with dark hair tied back. Unlike most humans I'd encountered, something in his eyes spoke of someone who had witnessed things beyond ordinary understanding.

"Selena," he greeted with a nod of recognition. "It's been years. I see you've brought your ward."

"This is Elara," she confirmed. "As I wrote, she needs protection that only your family can provide."

Garrett's scrutiny intensified. "Come inside. These matters shouldn't be discussed in the open."

The interior of the cabin was simple but purposeful. Herbs hung from rafters—some for cooking, others I recognized as protections against dark magic. Weapons lined the walls, not just hunting rifles but silver blades and other specialized tools. This was no ordinary hunter's home.

"Your letter mentioned trouble from the north," Connor said as he offered us seats at a worn wooden table.

Selena nodded. "Elara's village was raided. Her family killed. I found her near death at the edge of our territory."

"Raiders?" Garrett's tone suggested he understood she meant something else.

"The kind that howl," Selena replied carefully, making my heart skip. "Nothing Elara was involved with, but her connection makes her a target nonetheless."

I kept my eyes down, playing the role of the traumatized refugee, though my mind raced at how much they suspected about my true nature.

"And why bring her here?" Garrett demanded. "You have your witchcraft at Pine Hollow."

"Not against what pursues her," Selena answered. "And I've heard Connor still seeks a wife."

Connor's eyes met mine briefly. "We corresponded about the possibility," he confirmed. "Though I imagined more time for preparations."

"Circumstances forced our hand," Selena explained. "But I've brought gifts to honor our arrangement."

From her pack, she produced bundles of rare herbs, several protective talismans, and a specially carved amulet that made Garrett's eyebrows rise with recognition.

"The marriage benefits you both," Selena continued smoothly. "Connor gains a wife, and Elara gains protection from those who would harm her."

"These gifts are generous," Garrett acknowledged, "but taking her in creates risk for our entire village."

"I saved your son's life," Selena said quietly. "I wouldn't bring danger to his door without reason."

A heavy silence followed. Connor broke it, addressing me directly.

"The wendigo would have killed me if not for Selena. I owe her my life." His eyes were steady on mine. "But this arrangement must be your choice as well. Are you willing?"

The direct question startled me. In all our planning, Selena and I had never considered that I might be given a choice.

"I am," I answered, the words hollow yet necessary.

Connor nodded, seemingly satisfied. "Father, I'll show Elara the village while you and Selena discuss terms."

Garrett reluctantly agreed, and Connor led me outside, keeping a respectful distance as we walked in the morning sun.

"I know this isn't ideal," Connor said quietly. "But I owe her my life. That's at least what I can do"

"She told me about the wendigo," I admitted.

He nodded, a shadow crossing his face. "Not many survive such encounters. I owe her everything." His eyes met mine. "I hope this arrangement can benefit us both. You need protection, and I—"

"Need a wife for your status in the village," I finished.

"For companionship too," he added, surprising me. "These woods get lonely."

Connor pointed out various buildings—the meeting hall, the smithy, the village well. Villagers watched us curiously, some nodding respectfully to Connor.

"The forest beyond the eastern boundary is dangerous," he warned, gesturing toward the dense trees. "We've tracked several creatures there recently. Nothing as bad as that wendigo, but still, never go alone."

I caught the reference to the creature Selena had saved him from. So this human knew about supernatural beings. The knowledge made me nervous—how much could he sense about me?

"Do you... hunt wolves?" I asked cautiously.

His expression turned serious. "Only those that threaten human settlements. We respect the natural order. Some wolves belong in these forests."

If only he knew what walked beside him.

"There," Connor said, indicating a half-built structure at the village edge. "That will be our home. I've been working on it since winter."

I studied the sturdy foundation and carefully hewn beams. "You built this yourself?"

He nodded, a hint of pride breaking through his stoic expression. "My father taught me craftsmanship alongside hunting."

A commotion nearby drew our attention. Several boys surrounded a smaller one, shoving and taunting. Before I could react, Connor strode forward, his presence alone enough to scatter the bullies.

He knelt beside the small boy, checking a scraped elbow before sending him home with gentle words. The tenderness in the action revealed something I hadn't expected from a hunter of monsters.

When we returned to the cabin, Garrett and Selena had prepared a parchment—the betrothal agreement. The terms were read aloud: Connor would provide shelter, protection, and safety from pursuers. I would assist in his household and bear his children.

The wedding date was set for the following week—on the night of the full moon. My heart clenched at the cruel coincidence.

Selena's eyes met mine, offering silent strength as I took the quill. My hand trembled slightly as I signed away my freedom, my past, my very identity.

The document signed, Connor approached with a small leather pouch. Inside was a pendant—a protection symbol carved from bone.

"It will shield you from detection," he explained quietly. "At least from those without focused intent."

I allowed him to place it around my neck, understanding now that it wasn't just a gift but a necessary protection. He knew more than he revealed.

Villagers gathered to celebrate the betrothal, introducing themselves with curious glances and polite words. I smiled and nodded, playing my part while feeling increasingly hollow inside.

As dusk approached, I found a moment alone. Standing at the edge of the gathering, I gazed toward the distant forest. Somewhere beyond those trees lay everything I'd lost—my pack, my family, my true self.
