Chapter 74 The Hypocritical Face
Aria's POV
Seeing Draco and Serena grinning like that, I couldn't shake the feeling that those two who intended to betray Draco were about to meet their doom.
"The Dragon Clan's internal politics are a total mess. Don't stress about it; your main job now is to focus on getting better." Draco tucked a blanket around me and handed me a book.
I couldn't make heads or tails of the words in the book, but the pictures gave me a rough idea of what it was about.
Noticing my confusion, Draco jumped in, "Haven't you always wanted to learn magic? This book has the perfect spells for you."
Draco had promised to teach me a powerful offensive spell, and he truly kept his word. I hugged the book to my chest, tracing the cover like it was some precious gem.
Even though I couldn't read it, I knew Draco would help me figure it out. Once I learned those spells, I wouldn't need Draco to take down Jason—I could do it myself!
"But this isn't the kind of magic you're thinking of," Draco suddenly said, snapping me out of my daydream.
I was so excited I lost track of reality for a second. From my past magic experiences, Draco figured out that practicing magic, especially the strong stuff, was bad for my health. And now that I was pregnant, there was no way he'd let me mess with offensive spells.
Trying to hide my disappointment, I asked, "So, what kind of magic is in this book?"
"It's healing magic. It can fix up any minor injuries," Serena butted in.
That's when I realized the book was Serena's. But it didn't matter whose book it was; healing magic was still useful. Since I'd be stuck here with nothing else to do, learning this magic seemed like a good idea.
"Aria, get some rest. I need to discuss some Dragon Clan stuff with Draco," Serena said, pulling Draco out of the room.
Before leaving, Draco quickly said from the door, "Think about if you need anything from outside. I'm heading out tomorrow."
Once Draco and Serena were gone, I locked the door and contacted Aurora.
"Ms. Davis, you finally reached out! Are you okay?" Aurora bombarded me with questions as soon as we connected.
Knowing she was genuinely worried, I gave her a quick rundown and got straight to the point, "I'm fine. How's the SilverBlade Pack?"
Aurora went quiet for a bit, probably checking her surroundings, then whispered, "Colton recently announced he wants to be the new Alpha of the SilverBlade Pack. In the following days, several nobles chose to align themselves with him. Now the pack's split into two factions: one backing Jason and the other supporting Colton."
Looked like my efforts weren't wasted; they were finally turning on each other.
I pressed on, "What about Harper? Is she dead?"
"I was just about to tell you. The nobles backing Colton are super powerful and grabbed a ton of resources in less than a week. On the verge of losing, Jason pulled out the medicine Harper desperately needed and publicly threatened Colton with it, demanding he back off. To my surprise, Colton actually gave in. Based on what you told me, I thought Colton didn't care about Harper; so why would he..."
I never realized Jason was quite shrewd, forcing Colton to abandon his pursuit of the Alpha position publicly.
As an alpha, one must have the genuine approval of all subordinates. Yet, no one would risk their life for an alpha who showed blatant disregard for his own daughter's safety.
Should Colton have the audacity to forsake his own daughter in his quest to become the new alpha, the nobles who once stood by him would discern his malevolent and spiteful nature. They would soon comprehend that he would ultimately forsake them in his insatiable pursuit of power. Then they'd pull their support immediately.
But Colton was smart too. Instead of ditching his daughter, he put on a show of fatherly love. Though he gave up power in front of everyone, he gained more admiration.
I broke it down for Aurora.
Aurora gasped, "Oh my god! This is so complicated."
Within the SilverBlade Pack, Harper gradually recovered thanks to a miraculous remedy. Colton became seen as a compassionate and responsible leader, respected and admired by more people. Though he appeared to have stopped competing for alpha status and territories, I was certain he still engaged in secret activities.
As for Jason, he threatened Colton with Harper's life in front of everyone. Although this temporarily defused the crisis, allowing the SilverBlade Pack to regain a semblance of peace, everyone began to affirm that he was a malicious, hypocritical, and selfish scoundrel.
This power struggle wouldn't end so quickly and I wouldn't allow it to end just like that.
"Oh my god, Ms. Davis, your guess is completely correct! Many people are indeed secretly criticizing Jason and want to join Colton." Aurora's exaggerated voice came from the other end.
I checked the movement outside the door and confirmed that Serena and Draco were still in another room discussing other matters. Then I said to Aurora, "Aurora, it's time for us to do something. There is a woman by Colton's side who can let Colton continue openly fighting Jason!"
Aurora cautiously asked, "What do you need me to do?"
Colton only had one daughter, Harper. Now, the woman Lucien arranged by his side was also pregnant and would give birth to Colton's second child. But if the woman pregnant was captured by Jason, Colton would have a reason to continue dealing with Jason. As I thought about the pregnant woman, I instinctively touched my belly. Although it was less than two months, I could feel the child growing slowly inside.
It seemed that the child in that woman's belly should be about the same age as mine.
When Lucien refused me to give birth, I resisted so strongly, wanting to protect my child, so I thought that woman must also love her child.
I was about to become a mother; I couldn't help but wonder if I was truly capable of pushing that woman into peril for the sake of revenge.
