Chapter 180: Untitled Chapter
Before I left the headquarters that day, news was all over the place about the evil things Noah did. Everyone was talking about Sophia’s kidnapping, and now, they have found another thing to talk about again.
“Mr. Noah looked so innocent,” the officer driving me to the hospital said as we drove past a group of people who were rallying around the street with Noah’s picture on a banner.
It has become a part of them now to take to the streets with pictures of anyone who is a criminal and is wanted by the law. That way, others who aren't following the internet or the news channel would know what is going on in the town.
I still can't believe this. Noah and I used to talk about dealing with criminals. He once said he would go back to school to study being a detective so he and I would stand side by side, eliminating the wrongdoers.
Who knew he was only saying and doing all those things to avoid raising my suspicion? He was with me in the place where criminals were killed, he was there when they were sentenced in the court, and he was always there to help me solve cases.
Why am I even surprised that Noah turned out to be the person I didn't know he was? Even Raymond, who is a judge, who spent years in school studying, and who has been sentencing wrongdoers, is also a part of Bosca’s men.
Nobody can be trusted. They all have one or two things to hide.
“This is a big blow to us, Detective Lizzy. Mr. Noah was always with you, and I am afraid people would point fingers at you, too.”
Is he kidding me? People would have pointed fingers at me if they hadn't found out that Noah was the one who kidnapped my daughter.
I know they would say since he is my boyfriend, we are in the business together. But now, they wouldn't even think of that again; they will focus on calling him out.
“Can you just focus on driving and quit talking about Noah?”
He nodded his head and didn't say a word again.
I need to focus so that I can think of a way to get Noah back to this town and face the law. And oh, that reminds me. Where are those phones?
The information I screenshotted from his phone, I haven't had the time to even check it out. And the phone that was retrieved from his house, I haven't checked it out either. Now is the time to do it since we are headed to the hospital.
I dipped my hand inside the pocket to get the phone, but unfortunately, it wasn't there. Not even my phone is in any of my pockets. Jeez! I left them in my office.
I would have told the officer to turn back, but I needed to go see Sophia and know how she is faring. I didn't communicate with Doctor Felix because I was so busy interrogating those idiots.
Speaking of Doctor Felix. Wasn't he the one who acknowledged that Noah needed surgery? Noah must have paid him to do that. And no matter the amount he gave him, Doctor Felix will spit it out.
When we arrived at the hospital and parked the car in the parking lot, I saw Doctor Felix coming out of a car. He looked perplexed. And he was acting so clumsily. When he wanted to step over the brick, he nearly tripped.
“Doctor Felix?” I called, getting out of the car.
The moment he turned around and saw me, I saw a flash of fear inside his eyes. He waved to me, turned around again, and was about to hurry away when I signaled the officer to get him for me.
The officer was so fast that he got a hold of Mr. Felix and brought him to where I stood beside his car.
“Why are you in such a hurry, Doctor Felix? Don't you know me anymore?”
“Oh, not that,” he wiped off the sweat on his face. “You see… I uhm… I have a patient waiting in the surgery room… He was involved in, uhmm…in a fatal accident and, uhm…needs a bone transplant as soon as possible.”
Pffft. Who is he kidding? He isn't an orthopedist. He thinks I don't know all these things? What a joke.
“And you are the chief surgeon?” Seriously, it was so funny that I couldn't help but burst into laughter.
He is scared I know about his lies, and I will deal with him. So, shouldn't he be admitting and apologizing?
“Oh, uhm…”
“Quit it, Felix.” I grabbed his hand and pinned him to the car and pressing his neck to the car with my hand. “Now tell me the reason you lied to me about Noah’s limbs.”
“Lease, Lizzy, do not do anything to me. I have regretted my action since the minute I found the news circulating. It was Noah who forced me to say that. He said if I didn't lie to you, he was going to have me fired from my work and my license seized.”
Who is he? The owner of the hospital?
“You must not know, but Mr. Noah has a huge share in this hospital. He owns 70% of the investment, and it will be so easy to send me away.”
Oh, wow! So he is a big fish after all. I wonder how many businesses he has a hand in in this town. Let’s see if the president will talk about releasing Noah, too, when I get my hand on him.
“And you decided to lie to a detective who can decide to end your life with just a few minutes of investigation?”
“I had no choice, please understand. Now I feel so sorry. And I wish I could turn back time to amend the mistake I made.”
Sighs. I understand he needed to keep his job, and I can forgive him just this time. “If you try any shit with me again, I won't forgive you. Now go and perform the stupid surgery you lied about.”
“Thanks for the pardon, and I am sorry for lying again.”
What a shame.
“Go to the headquarters and get me the phones in my office. Make sure you bring them both.”
When the officer had driven away, I went inside the emergency unit to check up on Sophia.
While passing the window, I saw someone inside the room, a nurse, attending to her.
I wanted to stay outside for a while so she would finish her job before going in, since they don't want anyone in the room when attending to a patient. However, she was taking too long, and the officer who I had left there said she had been in there for more than five minutes.
My mind started reading out negative things to me, and I was forced to enter the room. The moment I pushed the door open, the syringe in her hand fell on the floor, and she started trembling.
