Chapter 56: Fifty six
Leyla’s POV
The door burst open with a sudden crash that filled the entire dungeon cell with echoing noise. I tensed every muscle in my body ready to fight to run or to do whatever it took to protect the women behind me in that moment. Nadia's hand tightened on my arm with a firm grip that conveyed her readiness to stand with me. Imani slipped into the shadows along the wall without making any sound at all. Yasmin reached for a pouch at her belt with quick precise movements that showed her preparation for defense.
But it was not Farook's guards who entered the space. Khalid al Munsif stood in the doorway his tall frame silhouetted against the torchlight of the corridor in a commanding presence. He is a fine specimen of a man I would definitely cop if I was straight but unfortunately, I don't swing that way. Behind him, Mariam stood like a pillar of ice and steel unmoving and strong in her stance. And flanking them both were a contingent of guards wearing the crest of the Sultan himself the royal house the highest authority in the empire.
Samira pushed past them a rolled decree in her ink stained fingers that she held with steady purpose. Her eyes found mine and for a moment her face broke into a brilliant relieved smile before she composed herself into the scholar once more with practiced control. Khalid stepped into the cell his gaze sweeping the scene with careful observation. The unconscious Emir slumped against the wall caught his attention first. The scattered coals on the floor drew his eyes next. The candlestick still loosely held in Farook's hand completed the picture of what had happened.
Then his eyes moved to the others with deliberate focus. Nadia wounded but upright stood tall despite her injuries. Imani emerging from the shadows rejoined the group silently. Yasmin lowering her pouch relaxed her stance slightly. And somewhere outside Mia and Samira who had played their parts perfectly remained in support of the moment.
His expression shifted in an instant. The usual calm calculating mask cracked into something I had never seen on his face before. Awe filled his features completely as he took in the full reality before him. He unrolled a document and began to read his voice echoing in the cold stone with authority.
By the power vested in this office by the Sultan himself and based on the evidence of conspiracy against a lord of the realm specifically the attempted assassination of Khalid al Munsif's household through sabotage and armed assault and the subsequent seizure of assets documented herein this estate and all within its walls are now under my jurisdiction.
He lowered the decree slowly his eyes finding mine again with new respect. The Emir Farook is charged with treason conspiracy and crimes against a noble house. His lands his wealth and his freedom are forfeit.
I could not breathe for several long seconds. It was over. It was actually over in a way I had not dared to imagine until now. Samira stepped forward her voice steady despite the emotion in her eyes that shone clearly. The property laws I found combined with Leylas dictated testimony about Farooks holdings gave us the legal standing. Mariams network provided the witnesses. Yasmins toxins disabled the guards without killing them clean deniable. Mias music created the distraction. Imanis intelligence led us here.
She looked at each wife as she spoke acknowledging their contributions with genuine appreciation. And Nadia fought through her own pain to lead the rescue. Khalid listened his expression growing more and more astonished with every word she uttered. When Samira finished he was silent for a long moment processing everything.
He stepped forward not to me not to Nadia but to the center of the group where all seven of us stood in the flickering torchlight. You were my collection he said his voice low and reflective. I gathered brilliant women and gave them space to be brilliant. I thought I was the collector the strategist the one who built this entire structure. He shook his head slowly in realization. But I see now. I was just the curator. You he looked at each of us in turn. You are her legion.
His eyes met mine directly. The debt Leyla al Kasim is not yours. It is mine. To you all. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out at first. What could I say to that kind of admission from him. He turned to the Sultans captain his voice shifting back to command with natural ease. Take the Emir. The trial will be the talk of the empire. He glanced back at me a hint of that old knowing smile on his lips. And you will have a front row seat.
Two guards lifted Farooks unconscious body with effort. He groaned but did not wake from his deep state. The candlestick clattered to the floor with a metallic sound. As they carried him out I finally found my voice after the shock settled. Khalid. He turned to face me directly. Thank you. It was not enough. It would never be enough. But it was true from the depths of my heart.
He inclined his head a gesture of respect I had never received from him before in all our time. Thank them. He nodded at the wives surrounding me with clear intent. They built the case. They planned the rescue. They moved heaven and earth to bring you home. A pause followed his words. I just signed the papers. Mariam stepped forward her grey eyes soft for once in a rare moment of warmth. There are horses waiting. And a warm bath. And a bed that does not smell like rose oil and despair.
I laughed a real laugh surprised out of me by the simple promise of normalcy. She almost smiled in return her expression softening further. Nadias arm wrapped around my waist steadying me completely. I leaned into her feeling the strength I had been running on for days finally start to ebb away. We did it I whispered to her with quiet joy. She pressed her lips to my temple in a gentle affirmation. We did it.
I looked at them all taking in every detail of their presence. Samira already pulling out another scroll to review with her usual focus. Yasmin quietly checking Nadias wounds with careful hands. Imani scanning the corridor for any remaining threats out of habit. Mia appearing in the doorway her lute still strapped to her back her eyes bright with tears of relief. Mariam organizing the exit with quiet efficiency that came naturally to her. And Nadia holding me up holding me together through it all.
Khalid was right in his words. They were not a collection at all. They were a legion. My legion. And we had just won the first real battle of a war that was only beginning.
The torchlight continued to flicker across the stone walls casting shifting patterns that mirrored the relief washing over me. The cold air of the dungeon felt less oppressive now with the decree read and the Emir removed. Every detail of the scene replayed in my mind the slumped form of Farook the scattered coals the candlestick that had served its purpose. The women around me represented years of quiet strength and shared purpose.
Nadia's grip remained firm on my waist grounding me in the victory. Imanis sharp eyes missed nothing even in this moment of triumph. Yasmin's subtle check on injuries showed her ongoing care. Samira's scrolls and documents had been the foundation of the legal end. Mia's music had paved the way with distraction. Mariam's presence anchored the entire resolution. Khalid's acknowledgment hung in the air like a final seal on what we had achieved together.
The corridor outside filled with the sounds of the Sultan's guards moving with purpose. The estate was now under new jurisdiction and the charges against Farook would echo across the empire. I breathed deeply for the first time in what felt like ages. The path ahead remained uncertain but the immediate threat was gone. The legion of women who had stood with me had turned the tide completely.
Khalid's words echoed in my thoughts as we prepared to leave the cell. You are her legion. The phrase carried a weight that settled warmly inside me. I was no longer alone in the fight. The debt he claimed was his to bear now. My own role in the testimony and the stand against Farook had been only one piece. The others had carried the rest with brilliance and courage.
As we moved toward the exit the horses Mariam mentioned waited outside. The warm bath and clean bed promised rest I had earned. Nadia stayed close her arm never leaving my waist. The others fell into step with natural coordination. The war was only beginning but this battle belonged to us. Victory tasted sweet in the damp air of the dungeon. The flickering torches lit our way forward into freedom.
