Chapter 51: A New Life
Miranda
Things seemed to be getting better now, time passed and we recovered from all the damage that had been done to us. The arrival of Melany transformed our lives in ways we never imagined.
After the storm we lived through with the lawsuit, holding her in our arms was a comforting balm. The day of her birth was a flood of emotions, from the tension of childbirth to the overwhelming joy when I finally saw her.
“She’s a beautiful girl!” exclaimed the doctor as he placed Melany in my arms.
Magnus was by my side, tenderly holding her hand. We both marveled at our little daughter.
“Melany. Do you like the name, Miranda?” Magnus asked, his eyes shining with emotion.
I nodded, tears of happiness in my eyes. Melany, our light after the storm. We spent whole days in the bubble of motherhood, enjoying the small moments with our newborn.
“I think I’ve never been so happy,” I confessed as Melany slept in my arms. Magnus smiled and gently kissed me on the forehead.
“We’re a family, Miranda. Everything we went through was worth it for this moment.”
I was so grateful for Magnus’s support and that we could finally have this moment of happiness together, I couldn’t imagine anyone else taking care of our little one, we both agreed not to tell Melany anything when she grew up, Magnus said he wanted to take care of her as if she were truly his own daughter, as he would take care of her as such.
I don’t think I had been aware of how much I loved Magnus until this point. The days passed between diaper changes, sleepless nights, and an indescribable joy at seeing Melany grow.
We were learning together to be parents, and every laugh and gesture from our daughter reminded us that we were on the right path.
“How are you feeling, Miranda?” Magnus asked, watching Melany closely.
“Complete. I couldn’t ask for more. Although…” I hesitated for a moment.
“Although what?” he inquired curiously.
I didn’t want to be the one to ruin the moment, but this is something I haven’t stopped thinking about for a long time, it’s as if it keeps me awake at times.
“Although I know we still face challenges. Richard, Hannah… Josh. I know they can still try something.”
“But this time, we’ll face it as a family.”
Melany became the center of our world, the light that illuminated the darkest corners of our past. We were determined to protect her and build a future full of love for her.
The legal battle was behind us, and although we knew the road would be long, we were ready to face any challenge that life presented us. The family we formed was our strength, and with that thought, we plunged into the adventure of raising our little Melany.
It was a radiant day, the sun painted the streets we walked as a family in warm tones. Magnus held Melany in his arms, while I walked by his side enjoying the scene.
Our daughter’s laughter filled the air, and the sense of normality after so many conflicts felt like a gift.
“Shall we get a coffee?” Magnus suggested, pointing to a café on the corner.
“Sounds perfect.”
We entered the place and settled at a table by the window. Melany was in her baby chair, curiously observing the hustle and bustle outside. Everything was tranquility and peace, until I noticed the persistent presence of a woman who seemed to be following us.
“Did you notice that woman?” I whispered to Magnus, discreetly pointing to the figure watching us from the opposite sidewalk. Magnus frowned and followed my gaze.
The woman feigned and kept walking as if nothing.
“Maybe she’s just someone who’s noticed how charming your husband is.”
“Almost husband,” I corrected, “I told you I wanted to do things right.”
“The wait is killing me, darling, I just want to marry you and you ask me for patience.”
“We’re already organizing everything, in a matter of weeks we’ll be husband and wife.”
“I’m counting the days for that.”
While inside the café, we checked the menu for something we might want. As expected, Magnus kept receiving calls from the company, things were going much better now that his name had been cleared, work never stops.
As we left the café, we continued our stroll through the picturesque streets, but the feeling of being watched persisted. Melany was happily playing in her stroller, oblivious to any concern.
“I think we should go home,” I suggested.
“So soon? It’s a nice day, we can take Melany to the park.”
“We still have to carry her, Magnus, she barely manages to crawl.”
“I’m just saying that my little one deserves to have good views and what better place than New York, don’t you think?”
I’m sure I’m the one who’s all paranoid.
“Alright, but only for a while.”
“Wait for me here, I’ll go to the bank and come back.”
We had given Patrick a few days off, well deserved, that’s why I was feeling so anxious, even though I know Magnus would do anything to protect me, I was worried he might get hurt.
The woman, however, continued to follow us and seemed to be getting closer and closer, it was then that, holding my daughter tighter, I confronted the woman.
“Do you need something? Why are you following us?”
“Miranda, right? My name is Laura.”
“What do you want?”
“You have a daughter,” she said with some resentment, looking at me as if I were the biggest of her problems now.
I was uneasy not having Magnus nearby, I felt that Melany was very unprotected.
“Get out of here before I call the police.”
“I think there’s something you need to know, that’s why I’ve been looking for you.”
“And what is that?”
“I am Magnus’s wife.”
My eyes widened in surprise. Wife? I knew nothing about a wife in all of Magnus’s history. How was it possible that there was someone else in his life? The news had left me in shock to the point that even my daughter stopped playing and looked at the woman, she didn’t understand what was happening, but it was enough for her to see my face to notice that something was different.
“I’m sorry, I think there’s a misunderstanding. Magnus is not married. He’s Melany’s father, but…”
Laura interrupted me with a sad smile.
“I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but Magnus has been hiding part of his life. We got married a few years ago, but things got complicated, and he decided to leave that chapter behind, I’ve come because I need his help.”
“What kind of help?”
“Over there,” she pointed to a woman holding the hand of a boy of at least five years old, “Magnus also needs to take care of his son.”
“What?”
My thoughts became a whirlwind. Was Magnus married before we met? Was that little boy really his son? Laura seemed sincere, but I needed answers from Magnus.
“Why are you appearing now? Why didn’t you resolve it between yourselves?” Laura sighed.
“Magnus and I had our differences. He wanted to distance me from his life to focus on work, but I think it’s time for my son to meet his father and for you to know the whole truth.”
Just at that moment, Magnus returned from the bank, immediately noticing the tension in the atmosphere.
“Is everything okay here?” he asked, looking from Laura to me. Before I could answer, Laura stepped forward.
“We’ve been talking, Magnus. I think it’s time for us to face reality.”
Magnus frowned, evidently uncomfortable, it was then that he seemed to recognize the woman.
“Laura?”
“There’s no perfect time for this, Magnus. Miranda deserves to know the truth,”
she looked at me, as if seeking my approval. I felt trapped between surprise and confusion. We needed to clarify all of this. I looked at Magnus, waiting for him to give some indication of what was happening.
“Maybe we should talk in private,” Magnus suggested, looking at me.
“Please tell me she’s not your wife.”
Silence reigned for a few seconds.
“It’s hard to explain, but I swear I’ll tell you everything, it’s not what it seems.”
“It’s not what it seems?” I spoke indignantly. “You have a wife and a child, I think that’s explanation enough, Magnus.”
“Miranda…” he tried to approach, but I stopped him.
“Clarify this here and now or I swear you’ll never hear from me or Melany again.”
He understood that I was serious and for everyone’s sake, I hope he gives a coherent explanation.
