Chapter 43: The Encounter

POV Eldric

The scents dissipated as soon as I left the cave. Just as Rachel had told me, they were masking everything with fairy herbs, and now I was starting to understand why.

Something within me stirred as the scent of the boys entered my nostrils. There, I believed that they truly existed. Before, it had only been a story told by Rachel – something that existed only in my imagination.

I continued walking around the area, being careful and paying attention to the new and old tracks that were present. Nature was preserved and different from my kingdom; it was respected. The animals there didn't use the land as they pleased; they coexisted, allowing each other their space.

After some time, I decided to return to the cave to rest for a bit. I needed to gather strength to find Rachel and the pups and return once and for all to our home before any of our enemies realized.

I slept for less than three hours. The eagerness to find her was making me anxious. My heart knew she was close, but something still didn't quite fit.

I started running early, trying to search in more distant areas. I needed to think like a wolf that needed to protect his family. I had to figure out how to ensure their safety when they returned home.

As the sun rose on the horizon, I continued the relentless search through the dense forest. My wolf senses guided me, following tracks and signs left by Rachel and my children. My heart pounded in my chest, and I felt determined to find them, whatever it took.

With every step, memories of the time I spent with Rachel flooded my mind: moments of affection, complicity, and hope that we would have a worthy companionship. These memories drove me forward, even when the terrain became challenging.

However, despite all my experience as a wolf and a king, something strange was happening. The tracks seemed to disappear and reappear inconsistently, as if deliberately concealed. This discovery worried me deeply and made me suspect that someone or something was interfering or hunting them down.

As I continued, a dark shadow crossed my path, and I immediately stopped, crouching in the vegetation to hide. My lupine eyes carefully examined the area, and I spotted a group of rogue wolves moving stealthily among the trees.

The wolves seemed to be searching for something, and I realized that their intentions were not friendly. I clenched my teeth and frowned, realizing that these unknown wolves might be the enemies threatening my family and my kingdom.

I needed to protect Rachel and my pups, so I silently followed the group, staying in the shadows and controlling my predatory instinct to avoid unnecessary confrontations. I needed to understand what was happening before taking action.

As I followed them, I overheard fragments of their conversation. They mentioned something about capturing someone and taking that person to an unknown location. Unease washed over me as I was certain they were talking about Rachel.

Sure enough, that was her cousin's group, ready to act since she hadn't given him any new information in weeks. She had told me how I should protect the kingdom, but I had been unable to help her protect herself and our children.

I followed the group for almost three days until I realized that they also didn't have the correct information on how to find them. I was relieved by that and began trying to connect with my Luna.

We had a bond beyond scent; we had something pulsing in our chests that tied us together.

I wandered through places I never knew existed. I passed lakes, hills, and cliffs. Everything was new and hostile, but my desire to have them back was stronger.

In the late afternoon, I entered a vast field and saw the small light-colored she-wolf sitting gracefully on the grass. She seemed oblivious to everything. In front of her were two wolf pups running around. Both looked at her constantly and then returned to their play.

I sat at a distance from them, ensuring the wind carried my scent away from her. First, I needed to appreciate what I was seeing.

I had a family.

While I observed my Luna and the pups from afar, I began to notice familiar traits in Oryon and Syrius. Every playful moment, every graceful movement, every curious gaze, all seemed reminiscent of myself when I was younger.

In Oryon, I saw the same unwavering determination that drove him to lead the kingdom with justice and protect his family. The pup's eyes were filled with courage and responsibility, and I smiled with satisfaction, knowing that my legacy was being passed on to the next generation.

Syrius, on the other hand, displayed an inquisitive curiosity, much like myself when I was young. He asked about everything around him, and his eyes sparkled with a thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world. I identified with the curious mind of the pup and imagined teaching him about the wonders and challenges of life.

Watching them together, I felt a comforting warmth in my chest. I pictured myself playing with them, teaching them to hunt and explore the forest, passing on all the knowledge I had gained throughout my life as a leader of the kingdom and lycan.

However, the satisfaction of seeing my children also brought a sense of guilt. I remembered my absence from their lives; eight years I would never be able to recover. The realization that I had missed important moments in their lives saddened me, and I promised myself that from now on, I would be present in their lives and do everything in my power to ensure their well-being.

After some time, I saw an older she-wolf approaching them, and my Luna beamed at the sight of her. That must have been their adoptive mother – the woman I should be thankful to for keeping my wife alive.

"Are you enjoying what you see?" I turned around quickly and saw the large, old black wolf sitting, staring at me. "I always knew you would find us, Lord Wolfhart, or should I say, Majesty."
