Chapter 26

JANINE lay on her bed, her face buried in the pillow’s softness, as tears cascaded down her cheeks. Her actions weighed heavily on her heart, and regret consumed her.

How could she have allowed herself to be pulled back into Ken’s embrace? How could she have succumbed to his kisses, his touch, when she had promised herself she would move on, break free from the chains of their past?

Janine questioned herself, her decisions, and her own strength. She had built walls to protect herself and shield her heart from the pain and memories Ken represented. Yet, in a moment of weakness, those walls crumbled, and she was enveloped in the bittersweet warmth of his love and affection.

But it was a trap—a treacherous pitfall that Janine had fallen into. She knew deep down that being with Ken again would only bring her more heartache, more confusion. Their past was tainted with unresolved issues, with a love that had become toxic.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the incessant ringing of her phone, the constant vibration of messages flooding her inbox. She reluctantly picked it up and began scrolling through the notifications.

Her heart sank as she read the messages. Paulo’s name, intertwined with hers, appeared as a blind item—a rumor circulating about their supposed relationship. Janine’s heart pounded, her thoughts spinning out of control.

The realization hit her like a bolt of lightning. Her actions with Ken had consequences that she hadn’t foreseen. The world around her was now questioning her choices, speculating about her involvement with Paulo. It was a cruel twist of fate, a reminder that her every move was under scrutiny.

Janine felt a wave of panic wash over her. Her mind raced, desperately searching for a solution, for a way to salvage the situation. But at that moment, the weight of her own emotions and the consequences of her actions were too overwhelming. She felt trapped, suffocated by the tangled web she found herself in.

Janine’s tears continued to flow, mingling with the uncertainty that clouded her thoughts. She knew she had to face the consequences of her choices to confront the rumors head-on. But deep down, fear gnawed at her, threatening to swallow her whole.

Janine’s phone rang again, startling her out of her thoughts. She hesitated momentarily before answering the call, not recognizing the number on the screen. “Hello?” she said, her voice filled with trepidation.

“Janine, it’s me, Paulo,” a familiar voice replied on the other end of the line.

“Paulo? What’s going on?” Janine asked, her heart pounding in her chest.

“I just wanted to warn you about something,” Paulo said, his tone filled with concern. “Rumors are circulating about us being in a relationship. I don’t know how it started, but it’s getting out of control. I advise you not to open or respond to any messages on your social media.”

Janine felt a knot tighten in her stomach. The news of the rumors only added to the weight of her already troubled emotions. “Thank you for letting me know, Paulo,” she said, her voice laced with sadness.

"Don't worry, Janine. I’ll take care of this. I won’t let any of my fans hurt you,” Paulo reassured her, his voice filled with determination.

Tears rose in Janine’s eyes as she listened to Paulo’s words. She couldn’t bear to burden him with her troubles, but his concern and promises touched her deeply. “Thank you, Paulo,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

“Janine, I can hear it in your voice. Something’s not right. Please tell me what’s wrong,” Paulo pleaded, his voice filled with genuine worry.

Janine took a shaky breath, struggling to find the words. “It’s... it’s just been a difficult day, Paulo,” she managed to say.

“Are you sure? You don’t look like you’re okay, Janine.”

“I’m okay, Paulo. Thanks for asking….” Janine’s tears flowed freely now as she tried to compose herself. She couldn’t bear to burden Paulo with the truth, the tangled mess of emotions that surrounded her encounters with Ken. “I appreciate your concern. But I’ll be okay,” she said, her voice filled with sadness and determination.

Paulo’s voice held a hint of skepticism. “Janine, I don’t believe you. I can tell something’s not right. I’m coming over.”

“No, Paulo! Please, don’t. I can’t face you right now,” Janine pleaded, panic welling inside her as she glanced out her window and saw Ken’s car still parked in front of her apartment building.

“But Janine, I want to help you. Let me be there for you,” Paulo insisted.

Janine’s voice trembled as she responded, “Paulo, please trust me. I need some time alone to sort things out. I promise I’ll reach out to you when I’m ready.”

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Paulo finally spoke. “Alright, Janine. But remember, I’m just a phone call away. Take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.”

Janine’s voice cracked with emotion as she replied, “Thank you, Paulo. I will. Take care too.”
