Chapter 59

Calla’s POV

The sound of the black hawk’s cry lingered in my ears while I understood the feather's significance. The feather descended from the sky and drifted through the air before finally landing at my feet. I sensed something deep within myself, understanding this as an unavoidable prophecy. The illumination from the Source beneath my paws dimmed like the last flickers of a dying star. I had closed the chasm, but the last challenge remained unfinished. I directed my gaze to Raiden, who appeared both fatigued and resolved. He read my expression and nodded. This sign would guide us regardless of our destination.

The feather from the raven landed in my grasp while I registered its solid weight. The feather possessed a smooth texture and extreme coldness, while its shaft maintained absolute darkness. This trailing sign was not created by any regular bird. I crouched down to examine it closely while my fingers followed the fractures of the barbs. An unfamiliar voice whispered through my thoughts, even though I could not pinpoint its origin. I heard Raiden’s cautious whisper behind me: The question made me close my eyes while my mother’s lessons enveloped my thoughts. She told us about a hidden guardian who roamed the shadows and sent messages through ravens. The feather confirmed it. The hidden foe had unveiled its presence after remaining in hiding.

Raiden changed his stance while his gaze moved across the forest boundary. The surrounding warriors had formed a defensive circle with their shields up while keeping watchful eyes for any hint of danger. They resisted the pull of exhaustion and maintained their position. Their loyalty fueled my resolve. I rose, clutching the feather to my chest, and called out in a clear voice: The warriors responded to my command with a unified cry to follow the sign and end his terror forever. The warriors understood our fight was nearing its conclusion and stood prepared for the final confrontation.

Our trek led us to the northern cliffs where ravens made their nests within the sharp rocks. The forest appeared to follow our movements with its shadows shifting in a guiding pattern as we walked. The Whisper deep within me stirred and pushed me forward. I needed more strength with every step that followed. Pain shot through my wound while my breaths came in painful stutters, yet I continued moving forward. Raiden remained at my side while his hand rested on my shoulder to help me maintain balance. The fact that he stood by me reassured me that I had companionship.

The wind roared fiercely against the cliffs where we stood while ravens flew above in organised groups. The birds' cries sliced through the air and sent tremors down my spine. I held the feather towards the heavens and watched as a raven descended to rest on a nearby rock. The raven tilted its head towards me while its luminous eyes reflected the dark sheen of the feather. I stepped closer, heart pounding. The raven emitted one sharp caw before it flew off and struck the rocks from which it took off. When the raven crashed and its body went limp, a concealed hatch appeared from underneath.

After kneeling next to the raven’s body, I discovered a small lever concealed underneath the latch. With trembling fingers, I pulled it up. When I pulled the lever, the hatch opened, exposing a narrow tunnel cut into the stone. A chilling breeze shook the entrance as though the land took a deep breath and released it. Raiden put his hand on my back and declared, “This is it.” I nodded and took a deep breath. Remaining warriors took positions at the cliff’s edge to establish a defensive perimeter. Their eyes stayed fixed on my back while I entered the darkness with Raiden following closely.

The tunnel constricted around us as it twisted, and moisture made its walls slippery. The wet stones caused my feet to slide as I walked along the twisting path. The Source’s soft light bathed my palm while ancient runes appeared on the walls through its illumination. The runes emitted a soft glow that led us further into the darkness. As I ran my fingers over the ancient symbols, their connection to forgotten magic became intensely palpable. My mind became filled with recollections of my mother analysing these identical symbols. The Whisper hummed louder, urging me forward.

The tunnel finally revealed itself as a vast chamber beyond. A lone black stone pillar stood at the centre of shallow water, which mirrored the Source’s light. Ravens sat in clusters atop the pillar as their eyes emitted ember-like glows. Beyond them, a figure emerged: The towering figure hid in darkness, but its eyes radiated white flames. Only now did I identify him as the Voidbearer in his genuine form. His physique appeared slender and majestic, while his facial features seemed etched from darkness itself. The group of ravens flapped their wings and made cawing noises when we started to enter. Raiden positioned himself beside me while transforming into a wolf as the chamber filled with potent energy.

The Voidbearer’s voice cut through the silence. “You came, Calla. The Voidbearer spoke with finality, "Our bond, which began when I brought you into this world, now concludes." His hand rose, and the ravens descended in a fierce vortex of feathers and beaks around us. My heart contracted sharply, but I maintained my resolve. I called upon the Source’s light and used it to guide myself like a beacon amid the chaos.

Raiden attacked first, striking at the ravens with his razor-sharp claws during their assault. I pushed through my pain to stand before the Voidbearer. "Your efforts will prove futile," I declared with a clear voice. “The Source belongs to Silver Moon.”

A laugh from him resonated through the chamber walls. The Voidbearer waved his hand, and the flock dispersed except for one raven, which circled above him. “I am the Void incarnate. The balance you hold dear will collapse in my presence.

My eyes shut tight while I accessed the full strength of the Lightbearer’s power. The Whisper directed me while my blood raced toward the final incantation. Raiden stood alert with a body that maintained its rigid composure. We had overcome impossible odds before, and this situation would be similar. I spoke loudly using my mother’s dream-whispered words.

With the moon at its edge and blood as my shield, I command shadows to dissolve before my power. Eternal spirits listen to my call and break the darkness to give us liberty.

The pillar of black stone began to tremble as I spoke the final word. The raven reached its highest point before it let out a single caw and dived from the sky. The raven's wings burst into golden fire as it descended straight towards the Voidbearer. I sensed the Source channel its entire strength into that one radiant bird. The bird hit his chest before its feathers burned off, leaving his eyes to flare with my light.

His scream reverberated through the chamber, causing the stones to tremble. The stone pillar split down the middle while the ravens scattered in panic. Breaking rock produced a thunderous echo. Standing my position, I observed his figure begin to flicker. The brightness swept away his shadows in waves while I sensed his power coming undone.

Raiden advanced, claws extended. The final blow ended his resistance when I stepped in while the Voidbearer tried to protect him. I advanced and thrust the obsidian sword Raiden had recovered from Morak directly into the Voidbearer's heart. His scream reverberated again before it softened into a faint whisper. The chamber began to feel lighter as the magic within him faded away. The black stone disintegrated into dust as the ravens disappeared.

Silence followed, heavy and complete. I fell to my knees under the heavy burden of both victory and grief resting on my shoulders. Raiden got down on his knees next to me while he laid a tender hand against my face. “Your mission is complete,” he spoke softly as tears welled in his eyes.

I shut my eyes tight while exhaustion claimed my consciousness. “For you... for us,” I murmured.

Raiden pressed his forehead to mine. “We survive.”

Golden light from the hatch above us flickered through the chamber’s ceiling. The world would know peace once more. The Source's light enveloped me while the chamber walls started to fall. Our return must happen before everything turns to dust.

Hope surged through my heart as I noticed a crack developing high above us in the ceiling. One beam of moonlight cut through the darkness above us. The shape materialised before me as an eye that emitted a silver fire glow. The Whisper vibrated through my thoughts and alerted me to dangers hidden from my sight.

Stone pillars behind us started shaking as tiny ash particles began to rain down.

The final battle was won.

But the true test had only begun.
