Chapter 26: THE FIRE THAT WON’T OBEY
Ophelia
Chaos swallowed the ballroom.
Shouts, growls, screams. Dominic and king Logan lunging, tearing into each other with feral brutality.
I tried to move, to run like king Logan ordered, but the moment my foot stepped back, something inside me, something deep, ancient, furious, snapped awake.
The air thickened, heat pulsed beneath my ribs. My wrist began to glow… then my entire arm.
“No—no, not now—” I choked, grabbing at my chest, but the fire surged up my throat like it wanted to devour the world.
King Logan threw Dominic across the room, snarling, but even he froze when he saw me.
“Ophelia?” he breathed.
The temperature rose instantly, flames burst from my palm.
Someone screamed, “WITCHCRAFT!”
Another shouted, “She’s cursed!”
Eve pointed at me, eyes wide with horror.
“She’s dangerous! Look—she’s going to burn us all!”
Dominic staggered to his feet, bloody and furious. “That power she used once before! She nearly killed wolves in my pack with that cursed flame!”
My breath hitched.
King Logan turned on him, eyes blazing.
“You rejected her, ignored her, abused her—and now you dare accuse her?”
The fire around me flared.
My vision blurred, everything shook.
“My Lord…” I whispered, “I—I can’t stop it—”
He moved instantly, pushing aside guards and nobles to reach me.
“Ophelia. Look at me.” His voice cut through the panic like a blade. “You’re safe. You’re not alone.”
I wanted to believe him, I wanted to breathe, but the fire didn’t care.
It roared outward, swirling around me in a burning tornado. Tables melted. The marble floor cracked. Crystals from the chandeliers rained down like falling stars.
Heat ripped through the hall.
Wolves dropped to their knees, shielding their faces.
Eve screamed and hid behind Dominic.
Dominic stared with wide, horrified eyes.
“What are you?”
I didn’t know, but the fire did. It erupted, bright and blinding and king Logan stepped right into it.
“LOGAN!” I screamed.
He didn’t hesitate. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t fear the flames that terrified everyone else.
He wrapped his arms around me as the fire swallowed us both.
The world glowed white I braced for him to burn, but the fire bent around him..Curling pulling back, recognizing him.
Gasps filled the hall.
Dominic growled in disbelief.
“Why isn’t he burning?!”
Eve shrieked, “It’s witchcraft! She’s controlling him!”
King Logan’s lips touched my ear, low and fierce. “You’re not hurting me. You could never hurt me.”
The bond pulsed at the wordsMy knees buckled, the flames flickered violently.
Then they dissolved, vanishing all at once, like they had never been there.
The hall was left scorched. Smoke curled upward. Wolves stared at us with fear, awe, confusion.
King Logan held me upright as my legs trembled.
Dominic took one step forward, pointing at me.
“She belongs to me. The Moon Pack will take her back—by force if we must.”
King Logan’s head snapped toward him.
A deadly calm overtook him.
He stepped between me and Dominic, claws still dripping with blood.
His voice was low, deep, final.
“Touch her and you die.”
The hall went silent.
Even the guards stopped breathing.
King Logan didn’t break eye contact with Dominic as he spoke again—every word laced with Alpha authority and something deeper.
“Ophelia is mine.”
A collective gasp rippled across the ballroom.
The declaration wasn’t political. It wasn’t territorial.
It was… personal, a deep bond
Dominic staggered back as if the words physically hit him.
“She’s not yours!” he snarled. “She’s my mate—”
“No,” I whispered weakly from behind king Logan. “You rejected me.”
Dominic’s jaw trembled. “Ophelia—”
King Logan growled so deep the chandeliers shook.
Dominic paled and his wolf recoiled, even Eve flinched.
Then Dominic spat on the ground, eyes burning with rage.
“This isn’t over. I’ll come back for her. I’ll take her—one way or another.”
King Logan moved forward so fast several warriors barely stopped him from tearing Dominic apart.
“Try,” king Logan snarled, barely restrained, “and I will rip your throat out.”
Dominic retreated, backing toward the exit, fury twisting his face, he fled, and Eve scrambled after him.
The remaining Moon Pack wolves followed silently.
The hall was left in stunned, scorched chaos.
My legs gave out.
King Logan caught me just before I hit the floor, scooping me effortlessly into his arms.
“Ophelia—hey, stay with me,” he whispered urgently.
My vision flickered.
“Too much… I can’t—”
“I’ve got you,” he murmured, pulling me close. The world felt distant, muffled. “You’re safe. I promise.”
Everything blurred.
His heartbeat was the only steady sound, I felt the warmth of his chest. The way he held me, tight, protective, desperate.
The way he breathed my name like it mattered more than the kingdom burning behind us.
“My Lord…” I whispered weakly.
“I’m here,” he said.
And then darkness.
The last thing I felt was him lifting me, carrying me out of the ruined ballroom as I collapsed completely into his arms.
