Chapter 37

It's been two weeks since the day Killian has undergone the surgery. He was breathing but he hasn't woken up yet. He was a living corpse with no sign of life except his constant rising and falling of his chest. I never once left his side even though everybody insisted that I take turns with them. Even the guy Killian called bastard was offering to take turns to be by his side but I couldn't leave him.

I wanted him to see me first when he woke up, and I wanted to see him first when he woke up. I couldn't wait to stare at his blue orbs that took me somewhere far more beautiful than my reality. I missed his voice that teased me about the way I reacted to his bold confessions of love.

I wanted to smooch his pouty lips and hid my face in the crook of his neck. I wanted to tell him that I more than liked him. I felt this sudden urge to tell him that I was so lucky to be part of his life. I wanted to tell him that I wanted no one but him. I wanted to do all that and more but he was unresponsive, he was merely a breathing body.

Who the hell took those photos and told Killian that I betrayed him?

This question had been bothering me every waking hour, and I was afraid to receive another attack from this person who was hell-bent on ruining my life. I called Victoria, Killian's mom to ask her if she could stay with Killian until I return to which she agreed immediately. Victoria was

I left as soon as she came to his room when I noticed Nicole and Leo sitting on one of the hospital benches that was outside. They've gotten close over their stay here at the hospital, it was one of the nicest sights I've seen since I've been cooped up in the hospital room. Nicole was laughing carefree at something Leo has said, I smiled to myself; Nicole was being herself without any sort of concealment to her real self.

I just called a cab and went to the office, preferring not to disturb their happy moment. The road wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be, and soon enough, I reached the company and got into the elevator. I pressed the 40th floor, planning to get some hint about the person who messed up with Killian on the day of the accident.

I unlocked Killian's office, which hadn't been touched ever since he left the office on the day he got into the accident. I saw the photos that were scattered on the floor, the photos that were the beginning of everything. I tore them in two, looking for the dust bin, but instead of throwing the photos, I picked something up from the dust bin.

I picked up the envelope from the dust bin, turning it over and opening it to see if there was anything inside. I was puzzled to find the envelope that was with Kate the day she took the files from me. I had an absurd thought that Kate could've given Killian the photos but like I said it was absurd. She had no motive to do that, she is not that kind of person. She is the nicest and friendliest person I've ever met.

Despite my reasoning as to why she couldn't do that to me, I decided to pay her a visit. I called Leo to ask him how his interrogation has been going. After Killian's accident, I had asked Leo if he knew about the leaked proposal and he told me that it was a proposal submitted by their employee. He told me that the company had given approval to go to Weslan and buy land for the project, the same land that the Raushan company had planned to buy. of course Leo didn't know about the land or that the proposal was a leaked one and he was questioning the employee on how he got his hands on that information.

“Hello? Leo?” I greeted pressing the button for the 37th floor.

“Hey, Lia!” he greeted back cheerfully which got me suspicious as to what got him this happy.

“Did that employee tell you who he got the proposal from? Why are you so happy?” I questioned doubting his cheerfulness was because I called him.

“Yeah, about that, I have given him an hour to tell me a name so I guess you will have to wait,” he said his tone getting all serious.

“So you still won't tell me why you're this cheerful?” I asked one last time as the elevator doors opened.

“I don't want to jinx it, so bye then!” he said and he hung up the phone.

“Uh, hello?” I said in disbelief at what this guy did while I knocked on Kate's door.

I put my phone into my back pocket and knocked again. Getting no response from inside, I tried the door if it was locked and surprisingly it wasn't. I got inside the office closing the door behind me. I sat on the chair beside her table, noticing the photo frame that Kate once took from my hand. I respected her privacy and crossed my hands across my chest to prevent my hands from reaching out and turning the photo frame.

I kept the resistance for a minute or so before I finally gave in, I turned the photo frame towards me. I picked it up wanting to take a closer look, I was dumbfounded at how I was blind to all this. I was flabbergasted at my stupidity, at my inability to piece things together. As I stared at the photo inside the decorated photo frame, everything Kate has said came to me each with a different meaning than what I had thought.

“You will get hired for sure. After all, I've found you after so long.”

“Imagine there is a doctor and he has a daughter, a little girl, say 10 years old. He also has a patient at the hospital, also a little girl, say 9 years old. So this doctor always makes the little girl his priority and never really gives much attention to his own daughter. He even missed his daughter's birthday twice just because the little girl asked for him. Do you think it is wrong of his daughter to hate the little girl?”

It was about us, Katherine and me. The little story she said her 'friend' told her was about me and I had no idea. I couldn't believe how I haven't noticed the signs, the little hints she threw my way. The absurd idea that Kate could've given the photo to Killian now made sense. Her motive was right in the palm of my hand, I stared at the photo of a man holding a little girl.

It was my psychiatrist, Mr. Holmes, Kate's father.
