Chapter 137

Chapter 137

Author’s POV

Something was wrong. Susan couldn’t shake the feeling ever since she left Mrs. Kim’s house.  Her mind kept circling back to the photo, the undeniable resemblance between her and Kelly, the way Mrs. Kim had hesitated when asked about it. And the hospital bracelet…

None of it made sense. Could it really be a coincidence? A triplet? The thought was ridiculous, too far-fetched. But it disturbed her relentlessly.

What if? What if she and Kelly were related? What if everything she knew about herself was a lie?  What if?

She sat in her bedroom that night, trying to scroll through the internet, her mind a chaotic mess.

Her adoptive parents had always been kind, loving people, but they had never talked much about her adoption. Whenever Susan had asked if they knew about her birth family growing up, they had brushed it off with vague reassurances.

"You were chosen, darling. That’s all that matters."

It had always been enough. Until now.

….

The next morning, Susan couldn’t hold it in anymore.

Her coffee sat untouched on the table as she watched her adoptive mother flip through the newspaper.

"Mom… can I ask you something?"

Her mother glanced up, her eyes wary.

"Of course, dear."

Susan’s heart pounded.

"Do you know anything about my birth family?"

The newspaper crinkled in her mother’s hands. The pause was too long.

"Why would you ask that now?”

Susan’s throat tightened. She forced herself to stay calm.

"I just… I found a picture yesterday. At Mrs. Kim’s.”

Her mother’s face paled, but she quickly masked it.

"Oh, honey, you know Mrs. Kim’s memory isn’t what it used to be."

Susan’s pulse quickened. They were hiding something. It didn’t matter to her that she was adopted, hell she didn’t care about her real parents, but the way her parents and Mrs Kim tone changed whenever she asked made her even more curious.

"Mom, please… just tell me the truth."

Her mother’s eyes move away, her lips pressing into a thin line.

"Are you not going to work today?” She paused, then exhaled “I told you before, Susan, what matters is the life we gave you. The rest… it doesn’t matter."

Susan’s heart dropped. That was it, no denial, no explanation. Just a talk full of something she didn’t understand.

By the time she left the house that afternoon, her mind was spinning.

If her own parents wouldn’t tell her the truth… she would have to find it herself.

……

Kelly’s house felt uncomfortable than usual when Susan arrived. It wasn’t just the public outburst or the DNA drama with Kate, it was the way everything seemed to be falling apart around her.

Susan lingered in the doorway for a moment before she stepped inside, she watched Kelly move around the living room, barely holding it together. Her hair was tied in a messy bun, her face pale and drawn. The headlines had been brutal, twisting everything they could to fit whatever story the media wanted to hear.

The pressure was getting to her.

"It’s getting worser everyday," Kelly muttered, pacing by the window.

Susan’s heart ached.

"What about the board?" Susan asked softly.

Kelly let out a humorless laugh.

"They’re pushing for me to resign. Kate’s still screaming about the will… and now the DNA test? They want me to prove who I am, like I haven’t spent my whole life doing that already."

Her voice broke slightly at the end.

Susan bit her lip, torn between the secret she was carrying and the chaos Kelly was already drowning in.

How could she drop another bomb on her now? But the questions wouldn’t stop circling in her mind. What if they were sisters? What if they were more than friends, more than what they chose to be?

Susan clenched her hands at her sides, heart pounding.  There was one way to find out, even if it meant crossing a line. She hated the thought of doing it without Kelly’s consent.

But… what if she was right?  Wouldn’t Kelly want to know the truth?

The plan came together in a rush of nerves. As Kelly leaned over the couch to grab her phone, a loose strand of hair clung to the fabric of her sweater.

Susan’s breath caught. This was her chance. Her heart pounded painfully as she reached out slowly, fingers brushing the delicate strand. It felt wrong, like a betrayal.

But she forced herself to grip it carefully, tucking it into the tiny plastic bag she had brought with her. Kelly didn’t notice.

……

Susan left an hour later, barely able to breathe. Her fingers shook as she sealed the bag. It was done. Now, there was no turning back.

THE DNA TEST

The whole process took less than five minutes, just a quick swab of her own mouth and the online submission form. But those five minutes felt like they altered the course of her entire life. As she pressed send, her hands wouldn’t stop trembling.

What if she was wrong? What if this was all some cruel twist of fate?  But what if she was right?

The idea that she, Kate and Kelly might be sisters—triplets—separated at birth was too overwhelming to process fully.

Her heart hammered as the confirmation email landed in her inbox.

"Your test has been submitted. Results will be available within five business days."

……..

That night, Susan lay awake, staring at the message for 100th time that day. Her mind raced with everything that could happen once the results came in. If they were sisters, if the truth had been buried all this time, how would Kelly feel knowing she had been living side by side with her other real twin and never knew?

Would she hate Susan for going behind her back? Would she even believe her? Tears burned at the back of her eyes.

"I'm doing this for us," she whispered into the darkness.

But deep down, she knew, she was also doing it for herself. For the little girl who had always wondered why she felt like she didn’t quite fit. For the woman who had spent her whole life trying to find her place in the world without ever knowing she had already found it.  As Susan stared at the message, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

A single message lit up the screen.

Kelly: Susan, you left without telling me. Hope you’re okay?”

Susan typed back.

“I’m sorry, I had something important to do. Good night”
