Chapter 132: THE FANG THAT STRIKES FIRST
The final trial was called “The Weight of the Crown.” Unlike the trials before, this one took place in the Sacred Grove, an ancient arena where past Alphas were buried in rings around the heartstone. Those wolves proved not only strength or bloodline—but vision.
It wasn’t enough to fight or survive. To wear the crown, one had to prove they could carry it. A test of judgment of balance, of sacrifice.
The moon rose full over the grove, silver and watchful. Fiona stood beside Michael as the gathered pack formed a massive circle.
Lucan stood on the opposite side, clad in ceremonial black, his eyes sharp and unreadable. Their son—barely thirteen but bearing the legacy of centuries—stood between them.
High Shaman Lysandra began the invocation.
“The crown is not gold. It is not inherited. It is not given. It is forged in the crucible of choice.” She raised her staff.
“Tonight, two heirs face the test, One carries the legacy of Moonstone. The other, its shadow.”
The Trial Began.
A glowing archway of ancestral magic formed between the standing stones. Each challenger had to walk through it and face a constructed future—a spiritual simulation where they would face choices no warrior could prepare for.
Life and death, mercy and war, loyalty or betrayal, only the pack would see their decisions—reflected in real-time through the glowing veins of the earth beneath the grove. Each choice turned the light red or white, unity or ruin.
Lucan stepped forward first. He disappeared into the light, what followed was silence, then red light. Again. Again and Again.
Every choice he made bled crimson. Every vision he shaped bent toward domination, conquest, and revenge.
He emerged minutes later, cold and victorious, smiling as though he had passed a test only he understood.
Then it was the heir’s turn. Fiona kissed her son’s forehead.
“Be who you are, not who they expect.”
Michael knelt in front of him, his voice a low vow. “You are my legacy. No matter what happens in there, you have already made me proud.” The boy nodded—and stepped into the light.
Then the sabotage began. Lucan turned, just slightly, his fingers moving beneath his robe. A whisper on the wind a curse in an old tongue. Suddenly the trial arch flickered.
The ancestral magic began to distort—twisting violently.
The boy screamed inside.
Fiona felt the pain hit her like a whip across the soul. Michael roared, shifting partially as the ground cracked under his feet.
“The magic is collapsing!” Lysandra cried. “He’s being pulled into the Nightfold—a void between this world and the next!”
Lucan’s eyes gleamed.
“It wasn’t me,” he said, voice sickly smooth. “Perhaps the ancestors finally see the truth.”
But Fiona was already moving—running straight for the archway.
“Fiona, no!” Lysandra shouted.
Michael reached to stop her—but he saw it in her eyes.
The wolf had chosen. Fiona dove into the light.
Inside, it was chaos.
Darkness flooded the trial world, warping it into a landscape of shattered memory and monstrous doubt.
Her son was caught in the center, surrounded by figures from the past—rogue Alphas, traitors, broken family ties, his power was dimming.
Fiona sprinted through the nightmare, her voice a beacon.
“I’m here!”
He turned toward her, eyes wide with fear.
“They’re saying I’ll destroy everything.”
“You won’t,” she said, grabbing his arm.
“But what if I do?”
“Then I’ll stand beside you,” she whispered. “Even in ruin. But I don’t believe that, I know who you are.” She pulled him into a tight embrace—and the darkness shattered.
Outside, the grove shook. The arch exploded in a pulse of white fire. Fiona and her son tumbled out, both alive—but glowing with something far older than wolfblood. The ancestral magic had bonded to them, both of them.
Lysandra’s eyes widened. “By the stars… he didn't just survive, he changed the trial.”
All around the grove, the ground glowed white. The pack gasped. Howls rose into the night. Unity.
Lucan stepped back, eyes narrowing. His plan had failed.
The final trial was clear. The pack had seen the truth—not just in the visions, but in the bond between mother and son, between legacy and future.
He had lost.
But Lucan didn’t run. Not yet.
He stepped forward, lifting his hand—and wolves screamed as a hidden glyph on his palm exploded with shadow.
The final strike.
An ancient soul-bind spell, aimed not at the boy—but at Fiona.
Michael moved faster than light, his Alpha cry shaking the grove.
Lucan was slammed into the ground by Michael’s rage, the earth shattering beneath him.
Fiona gasped, her energy drained by the aftershock—but she stood.
“You tried to end my son,” she said, voice shaking with fury. “Now you’ve tried to end me.”
Lucan, bleeding and furious, grinned through cracked teeth. “I didn’t come to win your trial,” he hissed. “I came to remind them that power like his... always comes with a price. You’ve won today, but you’ve also marked him and the world will come for him.”
Michael’s fist raised.
“Stop,” Fiona said, her hand glowed. A pulse of ancient energy rippled outward—and Lucan fell unconscious.
Later, as dawn broke over Moonstone territory, the elders declared it. “The boy is Crown Alpha.” The trial was over.
But war, it seemed, had only just begun.
5 days after the trial were deceptively calm. But Fiona knew better, Peace doesn’t settle this fast—not when your enemy leaves with a warning instead of a surrender.
Lucan had allies—a secret council of exiled Alphas, rogue witches, and mercenaries who had waited for the Moonstone line to falter. The failed sabotage during the trial had only pushed them forward and now, Fiona planned to strike before they could.
The War Room, Moonstone Keep, Midnight. A massive table displayed a map drawn in blood and bone. Michael, Fiona, and the Crown Alpha stood at the helm. Lysandra stood at the far end, eyes glowing as she traced wards in the air.
“Their camp is hidden beneath Dusk Hollow Ridge,” she said. “You have three days before they complete the binding ritual that will allow them to sever your son’s connection to the ancestral magic.”
“They want to hollow him out,” Michael growled. “Use his power without the legacy.”
“They want to make him a weapon,” Fiona added, her voice ice.
Her son said nothing, his expression was calm, but his fists were clenched tight.
“We end this now,” he said quietly.
The Strike began at first light, they moved. Fiona led a unit of elite trackers through the eastern pass.
Michael took the vanguard—a brutal strike force of warriors and trusted lieutenants, including warriors from allied packs sworn loyal to the Moonstone crest.
Their son—Crown Alpha-in-Waiting—was not left behind.
He rode with Lysandra and the Shadowguard, a group formed in secret for moments just like this. Trained in silence, sworn in blood, unseen, unstoppable. They moved like a storm with purpose.
Dusk Hollow Ridge, Lucan’s hidden fortress was carved into stone and bone. Warlocks guarded the gates. Tamed beasts prowled the edges. The banners flying from its black towers bore no crest, only the symbol of rebellion.
He was ready for them but not fast enough.
Fiona’s pack came from the east, setting the forest alight to flush out Lucan’s beast-guardians.
Michael’s wolves charged from the south, taking the outer guards by surprise, and from the shadows behind enemy lines, the boy and Lysandra walked straight into the sanctum—where Lucan stood waiting, bleeding from the trial but smirking like the devil himself.
“You brought the boy,” he said, eyes fixed on the Crown Alpha. “Good, I wanted him to see the truth.”
“What truth?” the boy asked coldly.
“That power always turns on its master.”
Lucan raised his hand. The walls pulsed.
The old binding spell he’d failed to complete during the trial—he finished it now.
Chains of magic lashed out toward the boy—meant to tear his soul from his body and flood it with stolen bloodline magic. But this time… the boy didn’t fight it alone.
Fiona’s voice rang out, Michael’s roar cracked the stone and Lysandra stepped forward, casting a counter-sigil in flame, her hair whipping like a banner in a storm.
The boy didn’t resist, He absorbed it. All of it.
Lucan’s spell backfired—his soul magic was reflected, searing his veins. The ground cracked beneath him.
“No…” he gasped. “No! You’re not supposed to control it!”
The boy stepped forward, his eyes glowing with twin lights—one of Moonstone, one older and wilder still.
“I am not what you made me,” he said softly. “I am what they made me to stop you.” And then he howled a sound that reached from the mountains to the rivers.
A call not of war—but of claim. The Wildblood within him surged, blending with the Moonstone Alpha blood, it wasn't destruction. It was reclamation.
Lucan’s fortress collapsed inward in a pulse of light and ash.
🫰Aftermath.🫰
The Moonstone banner was raised over Dusk Hollow Ridge. Lucan’s rebellion ended that night—his secret allies hunted down or scattered. Some knelt others were banished into the Voidlands by Lysandra’s magic. No more trials, no more whispers. The pack had faced the storm and won.
Back at Moonstone Keep, days later, Fiona stood on the highest balcony, watching her son speak to the younger wolves—his voice calm, wise beyond his age.
“He’s more than we dreamed,” Michael said beside her.
Fiona smiled, hand resting on her chest where the mark from the ancestral bond still faintly glowed.
“He’s what we fought for,” she said. “And he’s going to lead them into a new age.”
Michael took her hand. “He already has.”
