Chapter 19: Chapter Eighteen
Gabi starts to laugh uncontrollably. Everyone turns to look at her with a confused expression on all their faces. When she finally looks up to see their expressions, she stops laughing.
“That’s impossible. I can’t be the chosen one. You’re sure you have that right? Maybe it’s Lucy that’s supposed to be it.”
Una shakes her head, “The one born human from a wolf will bring peace and order to the fighting. Both helping to bring down the evil werewolves.”
Gabi storms out of the house, still not wanting to believe that the ancient scrolls were talking about her. She walks past the house and finds herself overlooking a side of a cliff. Crossing her arms over her chest, she stands looking out at the view, while processing what was just said to her. She has always been seen as pathetic, useless, and unwanted from her fellow clan members. How could she see herself as anything else? Why in the name of the Moon was this all happening to her? Why couldn’t she have been born with the wolf gene? She would have been accepted by the clan, her father would have shown her some form of love rather than resentment and disgust. And Renn… Renn would be what he has always been to her: a good friend and an amazing uncle.
Is that really all he is to you?
“Hey, are you doing okay?” That same familiar voice that always sends a calm throughout her body asks.
“Renn, please, I just need to be alone right now,” she tries to tell him without sounding rude. He has always helped her get through her bad days after dealing with her bullies in the clan, or after a brutal lecture from her father, he has always been there to help her see the good things. Why was she being so adamant about him not helping her now?
Because there could be a chance…
Gabi starts to shake her head to help get all the crazy talk out of it. Her brain and heart weren’t anywhere ready to even go near the thoughts that Renn might not be her uncle.
He walks up behind her and wraps his arms around her. “Why are you self-sabotaging yourself right now?”
She breaks away from his embrace and puts some distance between them.
“Una is not reading those scrolls right. I’m not who she says I am. I can’t be.”
“Why not?” Renn asks her as he puts his hands in his pockets, respecting the distance that Gabi has put between them.
“How can I be the person that’s supposed to bring peace to both sides? I’m just a clumsy, pathetic, useless, no wolf person.”
“Who can hear and understand werewolves in wolf form.”
She thought everyone who was a wolf could do that. Although looking back on the day that Baine was talking to her when Dan was in the water, Dan had no clue what was happening.
“Do you know how much you will be helping the clan when you tell them what we have learned?”
“How? Who is going to listen to me? I’ll tell you who, no one.”
Renn lets out a frustrated sigh before continuing, “You really think Oka would not listen to you? What about Mori? I’m sure the others would listen, given the chance.”
“That’s it, that’s it right there. Given the chance. We both know that if we make it back to the clan alive, Dyrk will have us killed or exiled before we have a chance to get a word in edgewise.”
This makes Renn silent. She nodded and smirked with attitude knowing that she was right, and there was nothing he could say that would change that.
“What if you brought me with you to talk with them?” They hear the voice say from behind them.
They both turn to see Lucy standing there in an awkward stance, which didn’t look like something she normally did. Lucy looked like a girl that always had confidence in whatever she did. Gabi can tell that Lucy had never been picked on growing up. Lucy’s life was different from hers . Lucy had two parents that loved her, maybe not her true birth parents, but parents no doubt. She has never had to listen to a lecture and be ridiculed for all the things she couldn’t do and never recognized for all the things she could do. Lucy seemed to be well liked no matter where she was.
Gabi knew that the moment they brought Lucy to the clan, she would be accepted once they learned that she had her wolf. She expects that Dyrk will be furious at first, thinking that they brought a human into their pack, when in all reality, it looks like he was the one to bring a human into the pack those eighteen years ago. But in the end, after much speculation and brooding, he would accept Lucy as his own and not think of Gabi as anything else but the thorn in his side that he’s had living with his clan for the last eighteen years.
“I don’t see how that could help the situation, Lucy” Gabi says with a shrug.
“Maybe I could help you talk with your clan, or this Olga that you were talking about.”
Renn and Gabi both laugh.
“Oka, her name is Oka. And she is one of the elders in our clan—old, but very powerful,” Gabi explains.
“See, if we can talk with her about what our ancient scrolls says, then maybe she can help us talk with everyone else.”
“You are forgetting the most important person in our clan. The chief, aka possibly your father, and has an extreme vendetta against the Luminars for killing his father and hates all humans,” Gabi informs her.
“Right, him,” Lucy says with a sigh.
“No one will listen to us unless he allows it. I have known that man my entire life, and I have not seen anything or anyone change his mind. Once he makes up his mind on something, he is hell bent on seeing it through to the end. He will never see the Luminars as anything more than the reason for our extinction, and he will stop at nothing to finish them off before they do the same to us,” Gabi finishes as she runs her hands through her hair and leaves them on the back of her neck with her fingers intertwined and lets out a sigh.
“There has to be something that can be done.”

Back at the clan, Dyrk sits anxiously in his chair, waiting to hear any new news on the whereabouts of Gabi and Renn.
He’s surprised when he sees two wolves with their tails between their legs walk into his throne room.
“Shift,” he demands with his Alpha tone.
Baine and Dane shift back into their human forms. He could tell that they had seen some fighting while they were gone for not all their wounds had healed completely.
“How come there are only two of you here? Where’s the third one?” he asks them.
Both Baine and Dane looked down with sadness until Baine lifts his head and answers, “They got Carl.”
Dyrk rises quickly from his chair, “Who has him?”
“The Luminars.”
Dyrk’s chest starts to puff in and out, letting out a howling growl, igniting his anger for what has happened.
“What word do you have on Gabi and Renn?”
“They found the house where her mother gave birth to her.”
Dyrk rolls his eyes. Of course she did. They should’ve burnt the house down years ago to leave no trace about what happened there.
“And?”
“There was another wolf,” Baine continues.
Dyrk turns and looks at Baine in a confused way. What wolf?
“A young girl who looked to be eighteen or so, had similar features to Gabi but didn’t look alike.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“We think that Gabi could have a twin that carries the wolf gene.”
