Chapter 107
107\. Ethan.
Silver bullets ricocheted off the vehicle, sending bits of metal flying as it whistled away. Chekov replaced the magazine in his gun and looked at me. It was the last one; the other men would soon be out, too.
"Ah, fuck! My arm!" The anguished cry cut through the chaos, drawing my attention to a man slumped in the corner, clutching his wounded limb.
The sound of gunfire continued to echo around us, and I felt I had had enough. I transformed, my body shifting into a state of heightened alertness, ready to respond to the threat. I pressed myself against the vehicle, my mind racing with the plan to blitz our way through the enemy lines.
Our path was blocked by several vehicles of the enemy, which meant the only way forward was through them. Retreating down the path would put our backs against the rising road.
But before I could act, a restraining arm clamped down on me. Chekov's firm grip held me in place. "Don't even think of that," he warned, his voice low and urgent. He shook his head, his eyes locking onto mine with a stern intensity. "That's suicide. We are outnumbered by at least a hundred men. We'll be walking into a death trap, my Lord."
I glanced over at my father, and Chekov's eyes followed. He was wheezing, his chest heaving with each laboured breath, his eyes closed in pain. The sight of him like that ignited a fire within me. "You see that, Chekov?" I demanded, my voice rising. "My father's hurt. I'm not lying around and waiting for help! We need to act, now."
Chekov's expression was grim, but understanding flickered in his eyes. "I know, my lord! I know!" he said, his voice laced with empathy. "But we can't rush into this blindly. The moment they see your head, they'll shoot. They have large silver bullets, specifically designed to take us down. We need a plan, not a suicidal charge."
I glanced at my claws and snarled at Chekov. "I have large claws too. It's either me or them." I got to my feet and nodded at him. "You know what to do." I turned away, ready to run into enemy fire.
"Shit, cover the Lord! Cover Lord Ethan!" He turned and barked orders at the remaining men.
I ran out from our covers and the bullets came, fast and brutal. It rang beside me, sparking as it bounced off the rocks at my feet. I ran on all fours, kicking dirt with my insane speed, rushing into an oncoming hail of bullets.
"Shoot him! Shoot him!" One of them screamed. I could sense the fear in his voice. It was terrifying to see your enemy running at you when you cowardly shot silver at him.
With a swift motion, I grasped a nearby rock, feeling its solid weight in my hand. I flung it with all my might, unleashing my superhuman strength. The rock shot through the air like a mortar, whistling ominously as it hurtled toward the enemy position. It crashed into their midst with devastating force, sending at least two men flying backwards like rag dolls and kicking up large plumes of dust.
As I spun on my feet, ready to launch another attack, I saw a group of enemy soldiers rapidly setting up a mounted machine gun behind a truck. Their intent was clear—they were going to cut me down with a hail of bullets. But before they could even get the gun operational, Chekov sprang into action. With his own firearm at the ready, he took aim and unleashed a precise burst of gunfire. The enemy soldiers manning the machine gun crumpled to the ground, their plans foiled in an instant.
Chekov's swift action had bought me a brief reprieve, and I took advantage of the momentary lull to assess the situation. The enemy was regrouping, but their numbers seemed far from being reduced.
Chekov's voice cut through. "We need to keep moving, my lord! This position won't stay secure for long! Go! I have your back!" He followed behind.
"I thought I told you to stay back!" I continued running in the direction of the others on the road.
"The men are out, I'm the only one with some ammo!"
"Shit!" I continued running, keeping my head low and his behind a vehicle just as the shooting became intense. Chekov crouched behind a car, two meters behind me and he threw his gun away. The faint glint of red in his eyes indicated he had summoned his wolf too.
With my hands, I signalled he took the right while I took the left, and he only nodded with a thumbs up.
"Ready?" I mouthed. "Go!"
We both fanned out to enemy fire, taking apart the enemy like it was nothing. I was in their midst, engaging in close combat, so it would be harder for them to use their weapons with their comrade around.
"Fuck him up!" Someone barked.
I grabbed the nearest man and slammed him hard against a truck. An enemy grabbed a gun and was about to shoot, but I planted my shoulders into his plexus region just beside his stomach, and he gasped for air, dodging a bullet almost instantly at point-blank range and slashing the shooter.
Chekov seemed busy, but he wasn't struggling at all, it seemed like smooth sailing until our enemy started dispersing quickly.
"RPG!" The warning cry pierced the air, followed by Chekov's urgent shout. "My lord! Run!" His voice was laced with panic, and I didn't need to see the threat to know I had to act fast.
I looked up, and my gaze locked onto the incoming rocket. Time seemed to slow as I watched it hurtle toward me, its trajectory unmistakable. My instincts kicked in, and I launched myself into a desperate leap, clearing the car just as the rocket slammed into the ground where I had stood mere seconds before.
The explosion was immense, sending both me and the vehicle flying backwards. I felt the blast wave rip through the air, tossing me like a rag doll. I crashed into another car, the vehicle's metal body denting and creaking under the impact. The car narrowly missed my face as it flew past me,
The collision sent shockwaves of pain through my body, and I felt something snap in my side. Agony engulfed me, a searing pain that left me gasping for breath. I struggled to process the injury, my mind racing to assess the damage as the world around me spun out of control. The pain was overwhelming, threatening to consume me whole.
"Oh—shit!" I lay on the floor, groaning in pain. It was getting dark around me, and I could barely stay awake.
"Get him!" The enemy screamed.
I could see the head circling over me as I lay on the floor, gasping for air. I couldn't believe it, I was about to meet my end.
The sound of a powerful engine forced me awake. "Get away from my brother!"
I raised my head up, to see Nathan ramming through the vehicles, coming to my aid.
