Chapter 106: AFTER ONE HUNDRED

The gold did not stop.

That was the first thing she understood in the aftermath... the power was not receding the way it receded after training sessions, was not pulling back to the surface resting state it had been living in since she stopped restricting. It was just present. Fully, continuously present, the way it had been in the moment of opening and the way it would be from now on.

She sat on the floor of Ronan’s room and looked at her hands.

Gold. Not blazing the way it had blazed in the moment of the opening, not the dramatic visible light of the surge, but present in her skin in a way that was different from before, a warmth that was also a luminescence, like something had been lit from within and had decided to stay lit.

She pressed her hands together.

Felt the power between them, fully open, every part of it present and accessible rather than sitting at a carefully managed distance from its own full state.

One hundred percent.

This was what it felt like.

Ronan had not let go of her hands.

She was aware of that the way she was aware of everything through the bond, which was differently than she had been aware before... the full open state made the bond blazingly present in a way that the incremental openings had not quite achieved, like the difference between hearing a sound through a wall and hearing it in the same room.

She could feel him.

Not just his hands. Everything. His heartbeat, steady and working slightly harder than resting, the particular effort of holding an anchor through the full opening of a Moon Blessed third layer. His attention, complete, every part of him present for this. The warmth he always had, amplified in the bond, filling the particular space between them with something that did not have a better word than his.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

His face was doing the underneath version, all of it, no management anywhere. A man who had done the thing required of him completely and was now sitting with the fact of what the thing had been.

“You held.”

“Yes.”

“The whole time.”

“Yes.”

She held his gaze.

“It’s different through the bond now. The full open. I can feel you differently than before.”

“I can feel you differently too,” he said quietly. “Since the moment it opened. The bond...” He paused, finding the right word. “Expanded isn’t right. Clarified maybe.”

“Clarified.”

“Like something that was slightly blurred coming into focus.”

She held his gaze.

“Ronan.”

“Yeah.”

“It’s extraordinary. What it feels like from here. Through the bond fully open.”

He held her gaze for a long moment.

“Good.”

Just that.

The particular good of someone who meant the full weight of the word.

Elena came in at twelve fifteen.

Lyra heard her before she opened the door... the particular quality of her footsteps, purposeful, the healer moving toward a patient with the focused attention that superseded any social calculation about appropriate timing. The door opened.

Elena stood in the doorway.

Looked at Lyra.

Looked at the room, the gold-touched quality of the air, the power sitting in Lyra’s hands even at rest.

Looked at Ronan.

Looked at the bond between them, not in the second layer, just the visible quality of what the fully open Moon Blessed power did to the mate bond when both were present in the same space simultaneously.

She did not say anything for thirty seconds.

Lyra counted.

Thirty seconds from Elena Voss, who had been filling silences with precise medical assessment since the first examination at Shadowpine, was the longest silence she had ever produced in a clinical context.

Then she exhaled.

“She’s okay.” To Ronan, who was still holding Lyra’s hands, who had clearly been waiting for exactly this. “The baby is okay.” She crossed the room, crouched in front of Lyra, and began the assessment with her hands, the familiar practiced movements of someone checking things she needed the data from rather than things she was worried about. “And she’s fully open.”

Something in Ronan released.

She felt it through the bond before she saw it in his face... the particular quality of tension that had been running at a low constant since midnight finally having permission to not be present. His hands around hers, steady this whole time, relaxed by one degree.

“The power,” Elena said, still working. “It’s not going to recede to the resting state again. You understand that.”

“I understand.”

“From now on this is the resting state. Fully open. Continuously accessible. The restriction is gone permanently.” She looked up. “That means everything you’ve been careful about in this building for the past months...”

“I know. It shows.”

“Yes. It shows.”

She continued the assessment. Checking the baby, the bond, the particular interaction between the fully open power and the pregnancy, all the things she had been monitoring for months and was now seeing in their completed state.

“Thirty hours,” Elena said when she had finished. “Caius arrives in thirty hours. You have between now and then to stabilize in the full open state before anything is required of you.” She held Lyra’s gaze. “Sleep. Water. Both of those things. Tonight was significant and your body paid for it regardless of what the power is doing.”

“I’ll sleep.”

“Both of you.” A glance at Ronan.

“Both of us,” Ronan confirmed.

Elena stood. Looked at the room one more time with the expression of someone who was going to need a significant amount of time to process what she had been present for tonight but who was filing that processing for later because the next thirty hours required her to be functional.

“Good.”

She left.

Outside the room the packhouse had been awake for forty minutes.

Lyra could feel it through the fully open state, the pack presence of forty wolves who had been pulled out of sleep by something moving through their building at midnight and were now in the particular state of alert that pack members entered when they felt something significant through the bond and did not know the shape of it.

She felt them in the corridors. The doorways. The kitchen where someone had apparently decided that whatever was happening required the comfort of the familiar and had started making something at midnight.

She heard the low murmur of voices through the old stone.

Not panic. Just the particular collective processing of people who knew something had shifted and were finding their way toward understanding what.

She looked at Ronan.

“I should open the door.”

He looked at her.

“Not for a speech. Just... they’ll settle faster if they can see for themselves.” She held his gaze. “And there’s someone in the corridor.”

He held her gaze.

He had felt it too. Through the bond or through his Alpha’s awareness of his territory or both... the particular presence of someone standing outside the room who was not Elena.

“I know.”

She stood.

Her legs were steady, the particular steadiness of someone who had done something enormous and had come through it intact rather than barely. The power was present and stable in her hands, the gold warmth of it visible in the room’s lamplight.

She crossed to the door.

Opened it.

The corridor.

Three Bloodmoon wolves at the far end, half-dressed, clearly having come out of their rooms at midnight and stayed in the corridor not knowing what they were staying for. Two of them she recognized from the training yard... Petra among them, eyes wide, looking at Lyra with an expression that was beyond the vocabulary of anything Lyra had seen on her face before.

Elena at the door across the corridor, already watching.

And.

Lucifer.

Between the far wolves and Elena’s door. Not at either end, just in the corridor, standing with the particular quality of someone who had come out of their room at midnight and had been standing in a corridor for forty minutes not knowing what they were waiting for but understanding that moving was not the right thing.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

The gold was visible on her skin, the fully open state doing what Elena had described from the research... the particular luminescence of something lit from within, visible in the gold-tinted warmth that sat in her hands and, now, in the quality of the light around her face.

Her eyes.

She had read the description in the 1947 text. Silver in the grey, blazing in certain light. She could not see her own eyes but she could feel the power sitting in them the way she could feel it everywhere, the particular fullness of a state that did not have any unreached corners left.

Lucifer looked at her.

She watched his face.

The man who had spent months trying... the ridge, the book, the note, the courtyard, all of it. The man who had sat in a library at midnight being present without needing anything. The man who had crouched beside her chair without asking to touch and had felt Rena move into his palm with the particular involuntary sound of someone receiving something enormous.

He took a step back.

Not retreat.

She understood the difference immediately, the particular quality of the movement, the way his body organized itself in stepping back... not away from something, not defensive, not any of the retreating versions she had seen from him in the early weeks.

Reverence.

The stepping back of someone who has just seen something that makes every version of wanting or competing or trying irrelevant because what is in front of them is simply itself, simply what it is, and it has nothing to do with him and everything to do with the thing itself.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

He did not say anything.

She did not either.

The corridor held them both, the gold light from her and the old stone around them and Elena watching from her doorway and Petra at the far end holding very still.

Then Lyra looked at the three wolves at the far end.

At Petra specifically.

“Go back to your rooms.” Her voice was different. Not louder. Just carrying differently, the power sitting in it the way it sat in everything now. “It’s done. We’re okay. Go sleep.”

Petra held her gaze for a moment.

Then nodded.

Led the other two back.

She looked at Elena.

Elena nodded once.

Went back in her room.

She looked at Lucifer.

He was still looking at her.

One step back, standing in the corridor with his face completely open and the reverence still in his posture, the particular quality of someone who had arrived somewhere they had not expected to arrive and was standing in it honestly.

She held his gaze.

“Thank you. For being in the library.”

He held her gaze.

“Was it enough. Having me there.”

She thought about the session. About the full truth of her life present in the building and what that had done for the power’s responsiveness. About a man sitting in a library at midnight not needing anything, just being present the way she had asked.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

She turned to go back in the room.

“Lyra.”

She stopped.

She looked back at him over her shoulder.

He was standing in the corridor with the old stone around him and the packhouse settling back toward sleep on all sides and his face still doing the open thing.

“He was right.”

She looked at him.

“Who.”

“The 1947 researcher. What she wrote about watching it from the outside.” He held her gaze. “Like watching something finally agree to be seen.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she went back inside.

Closed the door.

Leaned against it.

Ronan was looking at her from across the room.

She looked at him.

“Ready to sleep.”

“Yes.”

She crossed the room.

Lay down beside him.

The lamp going off.

The gold settling in the dark, present and warm and everywhere.

Thirty hours.

She was ready.
