Chapter Five: The Weight of Chains
Elena’s POV
I barely had time to process the chilling message before I was dragged back into the mansion.
Lorenzo’s grip was firm but not bruising, his palm burning against my wrist as he pulled me through the grand hallways. His entire body radiated tension, his jaw locked so tight I thought he might shatter his own teeth.
The moment we reached his office, he shoved the door open and yanked me inside. He released me abruptly, turning away as if the very act of touching me had set him on fire.
I rubbed my wrist and glared at his back.
“You don’t get to manhandle me like that,” I snapped.
Lorenzo exhaled sharply, running a hand down his face. “You don’t get to argue with me about this, Elena.”
“Oh, so now you care about what happens to me?” I folded my arms. “Because you certainly didn’t when you forced me into this marriage.”
His gaze snapped to mine, sharp and piercing. “This marriage wasn’t my choice either.”
I faltered for a split second before regaining my anger. “Oh, poor Lorenzo. Forced to marry a woman he doesn’t want while still screwing around with his ex-fiancée.”
His eyes darkened. “Careful.”
I scoffed. “Or what? You’ll throw me in the dungeon like a fairytale villain?”
Lorenzo let out a humorless laugh. “You think this is a game?” He stalked toward me, closing the distance between us in a single breath. “You think that message was just some petty threat?”
I refused to shrink away, lifting my chin. “I think someone hates me just as much as you do.”
He gritted his teeth. “You don’t get it, do you?”
I stayed silent.
His hands curled into fists. “This isn’t about you. It’s about me. Someone wants to get to me, and they’ll use you to do it.”
I sucked in a sharp breath, my pulse quickening.
“Whether I wanted this marriage or not,” he continued, his voice low and lethal, “you are my wife now. That makes you a target.”
I hated the way my stomach twisted at his words.
“I can take care of myself,” I whispered.
Lorenzo let out a bitter chuckle. “No, you can’t.”
Anger flared inside me. “You don’t know anything about me.”
His gaze flickered with something unreadable. “I know enough.”
Silence fell between us. The weight of the situation pressed down on my chest.
I was trapped.
Not just in this marriage, but in a war I never signed up for.
Lorenzo sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “From now on, you’ll have a personal guard. Matteo will be assigned to you.”
I clenched my fists. “So I’m your prisoner?”
He exhaled. “You’re my wife.”
I shook my head, biting my lip to keep the anger—and fear—at bay.
Lorenzo stepped closer again, his voice softer this time. “I won’t let them hurt you, Elena.”
I searched his face for any sign of deception, but all I found was… sincerity.
It threw me off balance.
“You don’t even like me,” I muttered.
His lips twitched, but there was no humor in his expression. “Liking you has nothing to do with keeping you alive.”
Something about his words sent a shiver down my spine.
Before I could respond, a sharp knock on the door interrupted us.
Matteo, one of Lorenzo’s top men, stepped inside. His face was unreadable, but there was tension in his posture.
“We found something else,” he said grimly.
Lorenzo straightened. “Where?”
Matteo hesitated before answering. “In Elena’s room.”
My stomach dropped.
Lorenzo’s expression darkened instantly. “What the hell do you mean?”
Matteo shifted uncomfortably. “A note. Left under her pillow.”
Lorenzo was already moving. I followed, my heart pounding against my ribs.
This wasn’t just a warning anymore.
This was a promise.
A promise that whoever was behind this… wouldn’t stop until I was dead.
A Deeper Look Into the Threat
The moment we reached my room, I saw the note on the bed. A simple, white piece of paper—so out of place in the luxurious surroundings of Lorenzo’s mansion. But the words written on it sent ice through my veins.
She won’t last long.
Lorenzo snatched the note and crushed it in his fist. His entire body shook with fury. I had never seen him like this—this wasn’t the cold, ruthless man I had married. This was something else.
Something dangerous.
“Who the hell got into my house?” he growled, his voice sharp as a blade.
Matteo shook his head. “We checked the security footage. Nothing.”
Lorenzo turned to me suddenly. “Did you see anyone? Hear anything?”
I shook my head, my throat dry. “I—I don’t know.”
Lorenzo cursed under his breath and turned to Matteo. “Double the guards. No one gets in or out without my permission.”
Matteo nodded and left the room.
Lorenzo ran a hand through his hair, his chest rising and falling rapidly. I had never seen him this rattled before.
I swallowed hard. “Lorenzo… what does this mean?”
He turned to me, his gaze dark and unreadable. “It means someone is already inside.”
I felt like the ground beneath me had crumbled.
Inside?
Someone inside the mansion had done this?
A spy. A traitor.
The realization made my blood run cold.
Lorenzo stepped closer, his voice low and controlled. “You don’t leave this room without me or Matteo. Do you understand?”
I wanted to argue, to tell him I wasn’t some damsel in distress—but the fear in my gut kept me silent.
For the first time, I understood something.
This wasn’t just a game.
This was life and death.
And I wasn’t sure if I would make it out alive.
That night, as I lay in bed, unable to sleep, my mind drifted back to a moment I hadn’t thought about in years.
I was ten years old, sitting in the kitchen with my mother. The smell of warm bread and cinnamon filled the air. She was kneading dough, her delicate hands dusted with flour.
I had been crying—some girls at school had bullied me again, calling me worthless and weak.
My mother wiped my tears with gentle fingers. “Elena, listen to me,” she said softly. “People will always try to break you. They’ll use words, lies, even cruelty. But you must never let them win.”
I sniffled. “But what if I’m not strong enough?”
She smiled, pressing a warm hand over my heart. “Strength isn’t about never being afraid, my love. It’s about facing your fear and refusing to let it control you.”
I clung to her words that night.
Now, lying in this cold, unfamiliar bed, trapped in a marriage that felt like a prison, I whispered those words to myself.
Refuse to let fear control you.
Because if I didn’t… I would lose everything.
