Chapter 103: One hundred & Three

The ballroom fell silent.

Champagne glasses trembled in startled hands, the orchestra froze mid-note, and whispers rippled like wildfire through the crowd.

“Dante Virello is alive.”

“That’s impossible…he died.”

“Then who’s been running everything?”

But Dante didn’t flinch beneath the weight of a hundred stunned eyes. He stood tall, composed, one hand resting possessively around Elena’s waist. His warmth was solid, real. And yet, her mind spun in disbelief. He was here. Breathing. Unbroken.

Through the stunned crowd came two figures she least wanted to see….Sofia and Victor.

They moved like predators, slow and deliberate, with Luciano trailing a few steps behind them like a shadow. Their masks of civility were flawless, but their eyes gave them away. Sofia’s gaze shimmered with cold fury; Victor’s jaw ticked with barely contained rage.

“Dante,” Sofia drawled, her smile sweet enough to rot. “What a miraculous return. You always did enjoy making an entrance. I’m so glad you’re not dead.”

Elena felt Dante’s grip tighten against her waist. His voice, when it came, was calm, steady but sharp enough to cut through the air.

“Some scenes are worth making, Sofia,” he said coolly. “Especially when they expose the liars in the audience. I suppose I should apologize for disappointing you…I’m not that easy to kill.”

Victor gave a short, humorless laugh and stepped closer. His gaze flicked briefly to Elena before returning to Dante.

“We thought you were gone, my boy,” he said, his tone falsely warm. “We mourned you. Imagine our relief to see you breathing again. I’m glad my daughter’s grief has ended.”

Dante let out a quiet laugh….dark, hollow. He leaned forward just enough that his shadow seemed to swallow theirs.

“Relief?” His tone turned icy. “No, Victor. What you should feel is fear. You tried to bury me. You stole what was mine. You tried to break her.” His arm tightened around Elena, pulling her closer. “Your daughter? Don’t insult me.  She's not your daughter you thief… You used her. But that ends now. Every secret you’ve buried, every lie you’ve told…it all comes out tonight.”

The air thickened. Even the chandeliers seemed to flicker, trembling under the tension.

Elena’s pulse roared in her ears. This wasn’t just a reunion. It was a reckoning.

Sofia tilted her head, the glint in her eyes turning vicious. “You sound so sure of yourself,” she said softly. “But remember, Dante…this city forgets fast. A single whisper can destroy what little name you have left. You might want to tread carefully… especially for her sake.”

Her gaze slid to Elena…sharp, venomous.

That was the breaking point.

Dante’s expression hardened, his voice dropping low—quiet, lethal.

“I’ve been too kind to you,” he said. “That was my mistake. I won’t make it again. This isn’t a threat, Sofia…it’s a promise. For every scar you left on me. For every tear you caused her. For every time you tried to destroy what was ours…” His eyes burned. “I’ll return it. Tenfold.”

Victor’s mask cracked. He stiffened, his lips parting as if to retaliate but no words came. Silence fell again, heavy and final.

Elena saw it then… a flicker of fear in their eyes. Just for an instant. But it was enough.

Sofia forced a brittle laugh, her poise beginning to fracture. “We’ll see, Dante,” she said, voice trembling slightly. “We’ll see.”

Dante leaned forward, close enough that only they could hear. His tone was soft but it carried like a blade.

“Oh, you will, Sofia,” he said. “You both will.”

Then he turned his back on them.

Sofia’s smile tightened. “We’ll see,” she said softly, a faint tremor in her tone.

Dante leaned closer, his voice almost a whisper. “Oh, you will.”

He didn’t wait for their response. With quiet, unhurried composure, he turned away, guiding Elena through the crowd as if nothing had happened.

The guests around them kept laughing, unaware that a war had just been declared between smiles and champagne glasses.

Elena walked beside him, heart pounding, her fingers curled around his arm. He didn’t need to speak; the look in his eyes said everything. He had come back…not just to survive, but to take back everything that had been stolen.

Behind them, Sofia and Victor stood motionless, their smiles frozen, their fury barely leashed. Luciano leaned in to whisper something, but neither moved.

They had just been challenged….and for the first time, they looked uncertain.

Because Dante Virello had risen from the ashes.

And the war had only just begun.
