Chapter 28: Unpalatable Revelation

After returning from Haverhill, Marino and Tony were exhausted but relieved. Isabella welcomed them back with a warm smile and prepared a meal for them. As we sat down to eat, Isabella looked at Marino with a mixture of happiness and sadness in her eyes.

"You'll be leaving soon, won't you?" she asked softly, trying to hide her disappointment.

Marino nodded, understanding her concerns. "I have some unfinished business to attend to," he replied. "But I promise I'll be back as soon as I can. We need to make sure that Marcus the Gandhi is truly gone and that you're safe."

Isabella sighed, acknowledging the reality of their situation. "I know, Marino," she said.

Isabella "Thanks for keeping me safe"

Marino reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand. "It was a hell of a task" he admitted. "But we'll get through this together. Once Marcus is out of the picture, we can finally start fresh."

Their conversation was interrupted by Isabella's phone ringing. It was her private investigator, and he had some urgent information to share. Isabella excused herself from the table and answered the call.

As she listened to the investigator's voice on the other end of the line, her face paled, and her eyes widened in shock. Marino noticed her change in demeanor and grew concerned.

"What is it, Isabella?" he asked, worry lacing his voice.

Isabella didn't respond immediately. She handed the phone to Marino, who put it on speaker so they could both hear.

"I found something... something crazy about your father," the investigator said hesitantly. "I've discovered some connections that lead to a surprising revelation."

Marino's eyebrows furrowed as he listened intently. Isabella's heart raced as she waited for the investigator to continue.

"Your father, Isabella, he's involved with the Mafia," the investigator revealed.

Isabella's eyes widened, and she gasped in disbelief. "What? That can't be true," she stammered.

"I'm afraid it is," the investigator confirmed. "I've traced some connections, and there's no doubt about it. He's a Mafia lord, and it looks like he goes by the name 'Ripper.'"

The name sent chills down Marino's spine. He had heard of Ripper before, and he knew that he was a powerful and dangerous figure in the world of organized crime.

"Ripper?" Marino repeated, his voice low and serious. "That's a name I'm familiar with."

Isabella was in shock, trying to process the revelation about her father. "I... I can't believe it," she whispered. "My whole life, I had no idea."

Marino placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sometimes, we never truly know the people we love," he said gently. "But we'll figure this out together. I promise."

Isabella nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I need to talk to him," she said, her voice trembling. "I need to know the truth."

Marino understood her need for answers, but he also knew that confronting her father could be dangerous. "We'll handle this carefully," he assured her. "We need to be cautious, especially with Ripper involved."

Isabella took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "You're right," she said. "But I can't just ignore this. I need to know the truth, no matter how hard it may be."

Marino nodded in agreement. "We'll gather more information first," he suggested. "Once we have a better understanding of the situation, we can decide how to proceed."

As the weight of her father's secret settled on her shoulders, Isabella felt a mix of emotions. She was torn between her love for her father and the knowledge of his involvement in the dangerous world she had just become entangled in.

Marino held her close, offering her comfort and support. "We'll get through this together," he reassured her. "No matter what happens, I'll be here for you."

Isabella looked up at Marino, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you," she said softly. "I don't know what I would do without you."

Marino smiled tenderly. "You don't have to worry about that," he said. "I'll always be by your side."

Isabella's POV

The revelation hit me like a thunderbolt, leaving me reeling in a state of shock so profound it felt as if the ground beneath my feet had turned to quicksand. My father—a man I had revered for his integrity, his unwavering moral compass—was part of the very world I had been taught to fear and despise. The Mafia. The idea was preposterous, inconceivable, and yet the evidence lay indisputable before my eyes.

I stumbled over to the nearest chair, my legs no longer able to support the weight of my body, nor the crushing weight of the truth. My mind raced, memories flashing before me like a kaleidoscope, each one now tainted with the shadow of doubt. Every business trip, every late night at the office, every hushed phone call—it all took on a sinister new meaning.

How could it be? The man who had held my hand as we crossed the street, who had checked for monsters under my bed, who had been my hero—was he really a monster himself? A man cloaked in darkness, woven into a tapestry of lies and criminal undertakings?

I felt a surge of nausea as the room seemed to spin around me. My heart pounded in my chest, a frenetic drumbeat that echoed my spiraling thoughts. Betrayal, confusion, and fear knotted together in the pit of my stomach. I had been living in a house of cards, and with a single, brutal gust, it had all come crashing down.

I tried to breathe, to find a shred of the reality I had known, but it slipped through my fingers like water. My father's face, once the picture of kindness and strength, now looked back at me from the mirror of my mind, his features twisted by this new, dark narrative.
