Chapter 75: Shadows at the Gates

The clash of steel and the acrid smell of smoke filled the air as Felicia helped Nelson to his feet, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and determination. Around them, the courtyard was a chaotic battlefield, their guards fighting valiantly to repel Ryker’s forces.
But the sound of those horns—deep, guttural, and unfamiliar—sent a chill through her that no sword could match. Felicia’s hand gripped Nelson’s arm tightly, her knuckles white with tension.
“Reinforcements,” Tobias growled, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the horizon. “But they’re not ours.”
Nelson wiped blood from his temple, his gaze sharp despite his injuries. “Then who are they?”
The question hung unanswered as the advancing banners came into view. The sigils of Ryker’s syndicate were unmistakable, but they were flanked by a second symbol—a silver wolf with blood-red eyes.
It was a crest Felicia didn’t recognize, but the sheer size of the approaching force made her stomach churn.
“They’ve allied with another house,” Tobias muttered, his voice low and full of anger. “This wasn’t part of the reports.”
“Of course not,” Nelson spat, gritting his teeth as he straightened. “Ryker always kept aces up his sleeve.” He turned to Felicia, his eyes softening slightly even in the chaos. “You need to fall back.”
“No,” she said firmly, her voice steady despite the dread bubbling within her. “We fight together, Nelson. I’m not leaving your side.”
Nelson opened his mouth to argue, but the determination in her gaze silenced him. Instead, he nodded, reaching out to squeeze her hand. It was a fleeting moment of connection amid the chaos, but it was enough to strengthen both of their resolves.
“Then we’ll make them regret coming here,” he said.

The battle surged forward like a storm. The reinforcements smashed into the fray with brutal efficiency, their armored soldiers cutting through Nelson’s men like a scythe through wheat.
Felicia fought with everything she had, her sword an extension of her will. Each strike was precise, each parry calculated. She moved with a ferocity that surprised even herself, driven by the knowledge of what was at stake—not just her life, but Nelson’s, their unborn child’s, and the future they were trying to build together.
Nelson was never far from her side, his blade flashing in the firelight as he took down one enemy after another. His movements were slower than usual, his injuries clearly affecting him, but his sheer determination carried him forward.
“Push them back!” Tobias roared, rallying the guards. “Don’t let them breach the inner gate!”
The guards responded with renewed vigor, forming a tight line to hold the advancing force.
Felicia’s breath came in ragged gasps as she fought, her muscles burning with exertion. She caught sight of Nelson out of the corner of her eye, his face pale but resolute as he faced down a particularly large opponent.
Time seemed to slow as she saw the enemy’s blade swing toward Nelson, a blow he was too slow to dodge.
“No!” she screamed, her legs moving before her mind could catch up.
Felicia lunged forward, her sword intercepting the blow just inches from Nelson’s side. The force of the impact sent a shockwave through her arms, but she held firm, gritting her teeth as she forced the attacker back.
Nelson turned to her, his expression a mix of gratitude and anger. “I told you—”
“I’m not leaving you,” she interrupted, her voice fierce. “Not now, not ever.”
Before he could respond, another wave of enemies descended upon them, forcing them both back into the fight.

As the battle raged on, the tide slowly began to turn. Tobias and the remaining guards managed to repel the initial reinforcements, their superior knowledge of the terrain giving them a slight advantage.
But the victory was short-lived.
A deafening roar split the air, and Felicia turned just in time to see the gates of the estate shudder under the impact of a battering ram.
“They’re trying to breach the inner walls!” Tobias shouted, his voice barely audible over the chaos.
“We can’t let them through,” Nelson said, his face grim. He turned to Tobias. “Pull everyone back. We make our stand at the gates.”
Felicia grabbed his arm. “You’re hurt. You can’t keep pushing like this.”
Nelson gave her a wry smile. “And you’re pregnant, but here we are.”
Before she could argue, the gates groaned again, the wood splintering under another powerful blow.
“We don’t have time for this,” Nelson said, his voice softening. He cupped her face, his thumb brushing against her cheek. “I need you with me, Felicia. But if it gets worse—if they breach the gate—I want you to run. For the baby.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but she shook her head. “I can’t leave you, Nelson. I won’t.”
His jaw tightened, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he pressed a quick kiss to her forehead before turning back to the battle.

The final assault came with a fury they hadn’t anticipated. The battering ram smashed through the gates, and Ryker’s soldiers poured into the courtyard like a flood.
Nelson and Felicia fought side by side, their movements perfectly in sync as they defended their home. Tobias joined them, his blade cutting down enemy after enemy with brutal efficiency.
But the sheer number of attackers was overwhelming. Felicia’s arms grew heavy, her movements slower as exhaustion began to take its toll. She stumbled, barely dodging a blow that would have ended her life.
Nelson was at her side in an instant, his blade driving the attacker back. “Stay with me!” he shouted, his voice raw with emotion.
“I’m trying,” she gasped, her chest heaving.
Just when it seemed like they couldn’t hold out any longer, a horn sounded in the distance—a low, mournful note that sent a shiver down Felicia’s spine.
The attackers froze, their eyes darting toward the source of the sound.
“What is that?” Felicia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nelson shook his head, his expression wary. “I don’t know.”
The sound came again, closer this time. The attackers began to retreat, their movements panicked and disorganized.
“They’re leaving?” Tobias said, his tone incredulous.
Nelson’s grip on his sword tightened. “No. They’re regrouping.”
Felicia’s stomach churned as she watched the enemy forces disappear into the night. The battlefield fell eerily silent, the only sounds the crackle of distant flames and the labored breathing of the survivors.
But the reprieve was short-lived.
A figure emerged from the shadows, their silhouette backlit by the flickering firelight. It was a man, tall and imposing, with a cloak that billowed around him like smoke.
Felicia’s blood turned to ice as he stepped into the light, revealing a face she hadn’t seen in years—a face she thought she’d never see again.
“Hello, Felicia,” the man said, his voice smooth and familiar. “It’s been a long time.”
Her breath caught in her throat, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing.
“Who is that?” Nelson asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Felicia’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She knew exactly who the man was—and what his presence meant.
He smiled, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before shifting to Nelson.
“I believe we have some unfinished business,” he said.
The world seemed to tilt beneath her feet as the man’s words echoed in her mind. She didn’t need to ask what he meant. She already knew.
Because the man standing before them wasn’t just an enemy. He was someone she had once trusted with everything.
Someone who knew all her secrets..
